Just a small correction: the toggle switch coil taps the pickups, not coil splits. That's why it sounds fatter than other guitars that have coil splittable pickups.
Nice review Shane. I have the ice blue version of this exact guitar. I have other nice guitars but this feels the best, sounds best, stays in tune and is the most versatile. This Ibanez with my Katana Artist just sounds mega.
Not sure what I think about the sunburst finish but a killer guitar nonetheless! You should probably hang on to that one! How does it feel compared to the Vola?

I just recently bought my first guitar, found a (older) Japan made RG550EXL on Reverb, and there are several other older RGs (at least two were Japan made (one was a black Prestige for 720 €), too, some Korean/Indonesian, all affordable priced, ) but well - all are FR (some people really don't like these, don't know about you, just found you). And... all are black, surprise, surprise. Except the one I bought - it's "glittery" black, so not completely black. :D And RG5320L (FR) you can get new (Prestige, so expensive). Or cheaper - RGA42FML (450 €, fixed bridge).

I had just clicked to comment on the 'honk' of the bridge pickup when you said exactly that!! Leftys are connected!! Great demo of a sweet looking and sounding guitar. Roasted maple is quickly becoming the norm in guitar necks.
It honks when you flip that mini toggle but when its just proper humbucker or single coil, there’s no honk. Just pristine clarity whether clean or dirty
Morning all... This one looks really nice Shane i’ve always had a soft spot for Ibanez. It was my first electric and a pretty decent guitar (way back in the 80’s) i’ve been fixing it up a little of late and it still plays great.

These new Ibanez Prestige AZ guitars are so dope; as a left player, I just wish they had more color options and fingerboard options compared to only having this finish available
I have 3 Ibanez guitars: GSA60, GRX70QA, and RG421. They're excellent, reliable, versatile, affordable, and easy to play! The RG421 HB is one step above mine and comes with DiMarzios stock!
One of the better intro jams I've heard on this channel - and some really great tones, too! Those Hyperion pickups blew me away. I played one of the AZ models with single coils, and I wasn't very impressed. Maybe I should look at their HH configuration models!
Ive got the same guitar. Its a fantastic guitar, it has singing voice. Tons of sustain, tons of sounds. But be carefull, the pickups are really neutral. So using it with a nice boost, eq or overdrive to shape the sound a bit that is when you start to love this guitar. Because you can shape it to whatever you want. ( not strat or tele sounds.) they are still hambuckers. But again, if you buy this guitar...you need to experiment with your EQ and the rest of your gear and you will be pretty happy with the amounts of sound, and the musical quality it has......
For some reason Shane this guitar really played great with your style. It was a exceptional review! Really liked the instrument. From a clean Strat to smooth humbucking madness. It was all there!
I'm not a big fan of Ibanez guitars, but this model is the exception! Beautiful looks and outstanding sounds! I will purcase this one as soon as I pay off some of my other guitars! Thanks very much Shane for demoing this one!
It's beautiful and sounds really good. Ibanez has some amazing guitars but I have found sometimes I like some of their mid-priced Indonesian models over their Japanese counterparts. I had issues with bad frets and a twisted neck on two different lefty Prestige models I tried to buy last year and ended up with an Indonesian-built RG5EX1L that has an amazing neck with some of the nicest frets I have found for 1/3 of the price of the Japanese Prestige model.
I love Shane's page as a lefty forum. It's great to see what other leftys are able to get their hands on. I have an original RG 550 that has been severely neglected over 20 years that I'm about to restore - nothing else feels right
Yes got to agree, my Indonesian ones are killer, in fact most Indonesian guitars from various brands I have tried have been great, and superior to similarly priced Chinese ones.
I have two Ibanez semi hollow body guitars and they are both excellent. Fit and finish pickups neck etc. Many players think that they are cheap and crappy which they are not at all. The one Shane's played is top quality and around two grand.

The AZ is the most versatile Ibanez since the RG421 and easily one of the best superstrats around. The Indonesian AZ242 is more affordable and it sounds identical to the more expensive MIJ AZ2402.
I have that exact model in a lefty. Have had it for a couple of years now. Such a great guitar. You make it sound great and also show that it can do more than metal or fusion.

I recently purchased an Ibanez Gio GAX75 fully loaded body. I had to find neck for it and went with a "banana/hockey stick" style neck. I did put in new humbucker pickups because the old one were shorting out, but I love playing it. When it makes you want to pick it up and play, then its a good guitar. I will always believe that.
As an ibanez fan i have always wanted a Japan prestige model, they are expensive here in the UK, used ones go for nearly new prices, if i ever win the lottery.......... Thanks for another great video Shane.

And yeh, I thought the single coil sounds were pretty convincing. Love the roasty neck. The input is interesting - like you say, great for feeding through your strap when standing, less so for sitting. Would a right angle plug cover both options? Nice review, ta!

Hey, Shane. You should test the AZ2202A model: same instrument but 22 frets, ash body, covered pickups ... a quite better tonal balanced instrument in my opinion.
As a lefty guitar player with a lot of premium guitars from custom shop Gibson and Fenders, to Collings and PRS’s wood library and PJE’s... this guitar intrigued me. I’ve own Prestige Ibanez guitars before and the locking trems, basswood bodies, and subpar dimarzio pickups always disinterested me and my more vintage preferences. I like everything about this guitar but that boring, blah finish... some binding or something would go a long way.. Suhrs are not a ton more money, and seem to be the target of this guitar. And a lefty can get a Suhr in any color... but the pickups and wiring sounds great in this Ibanez. I’m also guessing the Suhr would be superior in fit and finish. So buy this and get it refinished? Or buy a Suhr and swap out the electronics? Thoughts, Shane? Great playing as always.
My Ibanez Prestige RG652ahfmx has exactly the same issue with the frets. It annoys me a little as well. Great toto see Ibanez using Seymour Duncan, DiMarzio, Bareknukle, and Fishman pickups in their higher end guitars lately rather than just D'Marzios.
When it says humbucker split it’s actually a power tap when in position 1&5 with the alter switch engaged.... 2&4 is split with the alter switch engaged... position 2&4 without alter switch engaged is parallel/series I think... but awesome video anyway!!!

Try second hand? I've just seen a lefty (older, of course) Prestige for 720 € on Reverb. Don't know how much right-handed older Prestiges are available though, sorry. Didn't look as I wouldn't have use for them.
You should try an Ibenez fm93L if the chance arises. A 335 style with jazzy inspired pickups, love my LH version for blues. The review guitar sounds great, all the tone options sound sorted and usefully. Very versatile indeed. Off to look up the price now. edit: yep the price is prestige also. I'm sure it is worth it, you would just want to be sure you are going to hang on to it.
Funny ! I just bought my first Ibanez guitar, a mint 1986 Ibanez Pl1770. I feel it makes me play different, somehow I want to play faster. I can’t wait to take it to a gig.
Sweetwater price USD is 1999.99 and I understand this is Japanese Craftmanship ... But you can order an American Kiesel Theos (custom ordered to your spec) ...roasted maple ..Figured maple top...tons of options.....For less or the same price..as the Ibanez....sure you have to wait but this is a custom ordered American built guitar configured to the individual..... I don't get all the hype........ oh and they ship world wide
I reckon Ibanez often get overlooked with people having their romances with the likes of Fender and Gibson or even Ernie Ball Musicman. I have had a couple of Ibanez guitars and regret selling them. I reckon I’d swap my Strat hss prestige for a js2400 ibanez any day.

I’ve played a few. They’re amazing but they’re not so much better than the standard or premium line that I could just let fly the cost difference. It’s better but it’s not $1,000-2,000 worth of better to me.

My first good electric is (still have it) an Ibanez Roadstar II I bought in 1983. Still plays great. So I'm a big fan, therefore this video was amazing. :-) Can't afford Prestige models though. This thing sounds really punchy. Can't really add anything more than what you said.
Try second hand? I've just seen a lefty (older, of course) Prestige for 720 € on Reverb. Don't know how much right-handed older Prestiges are available though, sorry. Didn't look as I wouldn't have use for them.
You should try an Ibenez fm93L if the chance arises.
A 335 style with jazzy inspired pickups, love my LH version for blues.
The review guitar sounds great, all the tone options sound sorted and usefully. Very versatile indeed.
Off to look up the price now.
edit: yep the price is prestige also. I'm sure it is worth it, you would just want to be sure you are going to hang on to it.
U mean AM93 (339 style - small) or AS53 (335 style)?
I have been eying the much cheaper AM53.

Funny ! I just bought my first Ibanez guitar, a mint 1986 Ibanez Pl1770. I feel it makes me play different, somehow I want to play faster. I can’t wait to take it to a gig.
Sweetwater price USD is 1999.99 and I understand this is Japanese Craftmanship ... But you can order an American Kiesel Theos (custom ordered to your spec) ...roasted maple ..Figured maple top...tons of options.....For less or the same price..as the Ibanez....sure you have to wait but this is a custom ordered American built guitar configured to the individual..... I don't get all the hype........ oh and they ship world wide

I reckon Ibanez often get overlooked with people having their romances with the likes of Fender and Gibson or even Ernie Ball Musicman. I have had a couple of Ibanez guitars and regret selling them. I reckon I’d swap my Strat hss prestige for a js2400 ibanez any day.
Badass guitar, and seems very versatile. Really expensive in South Africa though :(

Thanks for reviewing this guitar. How would you describe the neck shape on this guitar? Thin like most Ibanez or are these more like Fender Strats?
Stein Tan I’ve read they are thicker than the typical Ibanez guitars but would like to know how they compare as well to the fender strat.
The neck feels more like an old strat. Definitely not like a thin Wizard.

Shane thanks for doing this review, I've been looking at this guitar as a possibility for a jack of all trades guitar. I saw in a different review that they were have tuning issues after using the whammy bar, did you run into and tuning issues? Thanks!
I have one with the wham and it does not go out of tune. It all comes down to the nuts: string slots wide enough, polished and greased.
No trouble with mine either and I thought there might be without locking nut.
I’ve played a few. They’re amazing but they’re not so much better than the standard or premium line that I could just let fly the cost difference. It’s better but it’s not $1,000-2,000 worth of better to me.
