For someone who doesn't build caravans, you've done an awesome job. Personally, i would not paint the checkerplate due to just more maintenance down the road. Well done guys.

I really struggle making silicon sealer look neat. Mine looks crap compared to the original BT silicon. I found a couple of things that help. Mask everything up gives a nice clean line, peel it off before the silicon dries.
You can buy “fast grab” silicon but you have to be super fast to tool it off so I use the slow setting stuff when I can.
Don’t play with it too much once it skins off.
Have a good look as the fan hatch over the shower. The old ones have a painted steel frame. It can rust under the silicon and then it will split the silicon at the edge and let water in. I just replaced mine and before it started leaking it only looked like it had some discoloured areas. The new ones have a plastic frame.

Glad you contacted your mate (Alex) who "use to build caravans". Water ingress is a bitch. It doesnt even always come from directly above where you see it. Rather it can track fir a distance away.
    All looking really good.

Yes absolutely! Turns out we’re lucky the van isn’t a timber frame, we’d be in trouble if it were

Hey with the water drip at the front - it would be worth double checking the sealing behind/around your front top clearance lights - prime spot for water ingress issues 👍🏼

Looking nice , must be feeling nice about it. Our front end also looks a bit tragic and someone mentioned to us we should try Raptor Coat. Supercheap sells it and it is apparently super tough AND you can tint it to any colour you like. I think I nice silver grey would finish your van off nicely on tool box and draw bar.

to get rid of the mold crush a dozen whole cloves in a morter a pessel mix in two tablespoons of metho and mix into one liter of water. spray the mixture over the mold and leave for a week and then brush or vac off the mold

I wouldn't paint the checker plate or the tow bar, the paint will not hold up at all. If stones can dent the paneling , what hope has the paint to survive. I painted the checker plate on my diesel heater tank. It lasted six months. Enjoy the videos , look for the next. :)

      Yes thanks mate!
Lots of arguments for both sides of the coin. Tough thing is I agree with both!
I think we need to simply make a decision and live with it. We intend on retiring the van to the property in a year or two so it’ll get another refurbishment then anyway.
Thanks for watching, see ya in the next one!

Should remove J mold and clean up. Don't apply sealant onto a surface that turpentine residue, metho or so.
Or digging top layer off and a re over bead, use a softening agent,

I can see some merch coming out with “I don’t build caravans” on it 😂. The caravan is looking better and better all the time. The sugar soap did a fantastic job. Like most here I’d not be painting the chequer plate, would probably go for a chemical clean only.
You won’t recognise the old van soon. Keep up the good work 👍

Wow the sugar soap did a great job!
I’ve never renovated a caravan but I would think painting the drawbar and checker plate will just make more work for you down the line and you might not be happy with the final result. It looks fine the way it was meant to be.😊

No no no no Please leave aluminium checker plate. We left home without our rock tamer and did only 180:Klms in gravel road. Suffered lot of damage,be to our black checker plate. Now we will have to replay at sometime in the future. Leave silver!!!!!!!!. You are both doing a great maintenance work. Van is looking great.

You are doing a great job for someone who hasn't built caravans. Ðo enjoy watching all your videos and have done so since you started your travels. As regards the checker plate, I suggest that you leave it in it's natural state. The black and white will be too much of a contrast. Best wishes from Rotorua NZ

Great effort you two , looking good but don’t paint just clean it up or we believe there is a rubberised paint that is a bit stone chip resistant which might be ok on the A- frame . Suggest to speak to a caravan retailer on how to clean up an A-frame . Look forward to what is to come .

  • @stephanevanderlee
    @stephanevanderlee 4 месяца назад

Don’t paint it. It’s not worth it for just looks, to get the paint to stick well to old Ali you’ll probably have to treat it first. And even then it will have to be a two pack, so you’ll probably looking at a heated spay booth. Plus not sure but those new vans with black checker plate may even be powder coated?
