Truth. Went on a cruise with a jacked-up knee this past March. I put cream, Biofreeze, and every pain cream you can think of. I gimped a week with a knee brace.
I’m an RN with 35 years experience, unfortunately weight is the factor. Yes, anything that puts compression on the knee will hurt because of excess weight. Swimming, bike, elliptical are all options that are less painful. However, remember, excursions involve walking and there’s nobody to avoid that. To enjoy your continued career and take advantage of your trips I think keeping the weight loss in check and some exercise to help speed up. The weight loss will help. I’m 63. My left knee was replaced six years ago and now my right knee has to be replaced this next summer. I don’t care what the sports medicine doc say. I was an athlete and a runner and it damage the heck out of my knees. I was running marathons and running 25 miles a week for exercise.
What a cool story from Dr Ken. Sounds like the cancellation and rescheduling of your doctor visit was exactly what you needed. Really interesting fact about the treadmill. I’d love to hear more from any experts out there. Cruise on Tony! 🚢 🎉
Walking on the treadmill is so very different than walking on the ground. They are way worse on the knees regardless of your weight! I learned this after knee surgery from both my Dr and pt 😮 ! Take a walk instead. If it's too hot, maybe find an indoor track or walk in the evenings. I got so much relief doing this! Best wishes on your continued health journey.
Ugh, sorry about the knee injury. We flew to Rekyvick Iceland on 8/13, spent a couple fantastic days before boarding Celebrity Eclipse at noon, 8/16. Did a lil tour around & decided we were going to love this ship for our Iceland, Greenland, Boston cruise. 8/17, a.m. we start to head out of cabin for breakfast & my left foot catches in bedding that had slipped off bed!!!! Flat out, just barely missing hitting head on door, stuck left arm out to catch myself as right was holding phone, water bottle! BAM! This 78 yo gal broke both ulna & radius in left arm at end towards wrist!!! To medical, they were great but shipped us to hospital saying we could not return to ship without note from local hospital stating I was “good to sail”. Well, nope, they refused & said they were setting ulna but radius would require surgery. Sooo, we get flown home (bags are on ship!) and straight to er where I find out can’t see surgeon to 8/28 which was day we should have been almost coming back on ship! Saw surgeon 8/28, he squeezed me in for 8/30 surgery & then 8 weeks PT & OT……still trying to get refund from celebrity which is another nightmare. Especially when you are the injured & only one who can take care of claim. Now, getting reading for b2b 1/4/25 on NCL Jade and determined to stay upright for the 25 days!!!!
I also “popped” my knee on a cruise. I was jogging up the stairs for ice cream on deck 15. LOL. My knee popped and then it burned. That happened the end of February. I have nursed it along with anti-inflammatory and Cortizone injection as well. Did some physical therapy and then it was worse. I had an MRI because the pain was horrible. Took 2 more cruises to Alaska and Hawaii and hobbled with a cane and a brace. Two weeks ago I finally had to have surgery on my knee for a torn meniscus. the recovery has been pretty easy and I’m leaving today on my next cruise to Mexico. It’s been a journey! I had a complex torn meniscus with a bakers cyst. Surgeon had to remove a section of my meniscus. Now I am a candidate for a knee replacement in the future. I am 60. Ugh! Take care
Such goooood news for your knee. Tony!!! Glad the doctor also helped to prohibit future stress on your knees with his treadmill advice - good job, Dr. Ken!! Also, what a touching story about his sister and how he started cruising, thanks to her!! And, the Love Boat movie playing in the lobby?? Get out!!
Great news!! Wow Dr Ken's sister was part of the cruise family for sure..that story got to me. Glad you are ok to Cruise on without having to do anything major first. You have been there and done that already in recent history....:)
Given how much traveling you do, an MRI would have been a good idea. Although the cortisone shot helps the pain and inflammation now, it could also mask a more serious problem. Consider advocating for the MRI to make sure your knee has no underlying issues.
Glad to hear you are feeling better. If you go, take some knee braces with you! I would also curtail your long walks and going up and down on stairs. As one larger person to the other, (I have lost over 70 lbs and still need to loose about 40 more pounds) your knees are so important! The less weight you have to carry on your frame, pressing down on your knees, or every time you stand up, the better off you will be. Love your vlogs! Stay safe! Keep up the good work!😊
I injured my knee this year on the Sun Princess. Strained/sprained ligaments in my knee. Greece was beautiful was from deck 15. Rested it for a week and kept it wrapped with a cane made the rest of the ports. Medical and the people I met were great!
Yes my son is in the Army since he left school, he is now 45 and said running is the worst thing you can do for knee problems now and the impact when your older, he does cardio and weights x
If you have an issue with your knee on the next cruise, your travel medical insurance probably won’t cover any medical costs you incur within 90 days of the last medical treatment for the knee. If you’re OK with paying out of pocket, go for it.
I became a chiropractor due to a knee that re-injured after orthroscopic surgery, for a torn cartilage disc inside the knee joint. Chiropractic worked, and I have never had to do another knee surgery for the 2nd tear in my knee cartilage disc. Adjusting L3, the third lumbar (low back) vertebra, untwists the knee joint and restores normal weight load distribution on the knee cartilage, to prevent it grinding/popping and getting "stuck" by a torn cartilage fragment. It's been 40 years, now, and I've led an active life thru maintenance with regular chiropractic adjustments, which help much more than only my knee joint to function better!
Glad you got a good report on the knee. Yesterday I said to you, keep up the great work regarding the walking 2 miles a day. But in my defense, at the time, I didn’t know you were walking on a treadmill. Anyway, glad your knee is getting better and that you don’t have to cancel your cruise. Please take good care of yourself and Jenny B.
I've had bad knees for years. Treadmill is terrible for knee joints if you're carrying extra weight and trend toward joint issues as I do. The elliptical was always kinder to my knees. You may have inspired me to get back to it. Keep up the great work!
Dr. Ken is a gem. I have spent so much time on treadmills, not realizing they were exacerbating my knee problems.i appreciate you sharing his advice. So glad you can do your cruise in 16 days!
Do like we did on our last 7 day cruise, we only left the ship once. We enjoyed the hot tub while everyone else was running around on shore. I read 5 books. We ate meals when we felt like and only attended one show. It was relaxing, rejuvenating and blissful! The best one ever
Every afternoon I watch your show. I must say your singing voice has improved. Enjoy your show very much, it's part of my day. Big hello from Palm Beach, Fl
Tony, I suffered a torn meniscus on my left knee. Had arthroscopic surgery 2 weeks ago. Doing well with no pain. All the best for you. I hope you get to cruise. I’m going on one next Friday!
I had a cortisone shot the day before embarking the Carnival Fantasy in Mobile, and had a knee replacement 30 days before embarking on the Carnival Liberty in Port Canaveral. You are not too injured to cruise!
Hi, Tony. I would suggest first that you get a walker so you can take some pressure off your weight bearing joints, including your knee. Secondly, there are NSAID gels which you can put on affected joints. Third, in regards to exercise, I also have difficulty with putting pressure on similar joints, and I found that chair exercises on RUclips channels helped me get the exercise I needed and lose the weight so there is less pressure on those joints. I actually had my first chair exercises on a cruise, and it did so well, that I have continued them ever since. I think your doctor was right about the treadmill. Stay well and cruise often and I hope the knee does not limit your cruising.
I always give you "thumbs up" even before watching, as your episodes are totally entertaining --- and love your little musical interludes, too!! 😂👍🏻 Hope the knee situation improves!! 🙏❣️
I like Dr. Ken! Cortisone shots can be horribly painful (don't try one on the inside of your hip without something to bite on) but they really do help calm things down so you can heal. I love that he didn't prescribe pain killers. So many doctors are lazy and prescribe them like they're candy but they don't help anything. I hope you can return the treadmill for an exercise bike. They're really so much better! And I reckon I should get one mine today. I've been bad.
I must concur! You are never too hurt to cruise! I’m about to get on a cruise ship and I have had four spinal surgeries and currently walking around with three herniated disks and a bum knee! Make sure you are prepared! I look like the walking wounded with a back brace, knee brace and crutch canes! Make sure you have your pain meds and make sure you take it easy! It’s a cruise! Get better soon Tony! Best of luck!
Exercise on a stationary bicycle. After knee surgery, pt had me start out on the bike. You will be ok. Tony, bring your knee brace if you hurt your knee again. Better safe than sorry. Also a plastic bag to load with ice, if you need it. Ice will help a sudden injury. Great show,
We had a treadmill and when my husband (also a heavy set guy) started having knee issues, we got an elliptical as it's easier on the knees. Two points about it: (1) My fitness tracker didn't register me as "taking steps" on the elliptical because it's so low impact; and (2) the elliptical requires very little maintenance, which is a really great benefit to it. You pretty much just wipe it down after use and that's it. No need to add lubrication to the tread or re-position the tread, etc., like you have to with a treadmill. And I think the elliptical is lighter, too, if we want to move it. If your gym has a stair machine, I recommend trying that, too. I hope that you're feeling 100% soon, Tony!
Tony, I did a 14 day cruise to Alaska 10 weeks after full knee replacement. I'm not going to lie and say I didn't have pain at the end of each day, but I had no problems completing the cruise. What I will say is that cruising with an injury just requires a bit of pre planning. 1. Bring and use a cane. Particularly if the ship starts to roll a little, having the cane provides that extra degree of support. Truthfully, I may never travel without a cane again. 2. Bring a refillable ice pack. We had our steward leave some ice in our cabin every night and I took some time to ice it every evening. Have fun cruising!
I feel your pain i had been having knee pain for a while and i always thought the tread mill was good im glad you mentioned that i use to go on the tread mill every day for 30 min
Hey Tony, I also got bad knees. A while back, I had my doc inject my left knee with a steroid. It lasted about 2 weeks before the pain came back. A month or so later, got another shot into my knee, but it was a DIFFERENT "stuff". This new "stuff" is called "Durolane", and it's a hyaluronic acid. The pain was GONE! 15 months later, I decided to get another, this time in both knees. I'm currently feeling REAL good in the knees. The downside is, if your insurance doesn't cover, it's fairly expensive. $2k+.
We’re sailing on the Sun on Dec 14. My wife is getting a knee replacement on Jan 7. She has been using a walker for 4 months including on a 15 day trans Atlantic cruise in October. Get a walker. She also uses it to carry stuff. Stay at home in pain or be on a ship in pain. A no brainer ship wins all the time. Go go go.
The Doctor gave you pretty good advice, particularly about walking on a treadmill. Cortisone shots may work, , but they sometime don't. When your knee is in pain, in addition to anti inflammatories - Rest, elevate, rotate heat and ice. Use compression if it helps. When it hurts use a cane to take off the pressure on that knee.
I’m 71 and had a knee replacement a little over a year ago and my other one replaced about 3 months ago. I have a cruise scheduled in January. From experience with the first knee I know I won’t be taking any strenuous shore excursions but I’m going to have fun anyway I can. You may be a bit fluffy as am I. But somehow I’ve managed to loose a feed sack worth of weight (a sack of feed is 50 lbs) over the last 3 years without much effort. I’m not sure if that glimpse of an X-Ray of a knee from your last cruise was yours but it looked a lot like my X-Rays before my knee replacements. Don’t be afraid if that’s an upcoming option. After all the therapy and time it’s well worth it. I noticed you fell in Ireland and I’ve had several of those too. But, none since my first knee replacement.
Bless your heart ! I have knee trouble in my left knee and plantar fasciitis in right foot so it’s painful to walk sometime but I’m working it out! Hope those cortizone shots work well! Hope you and Jenny B have many more “good knee” years ahead!
Just had knee arthroscopic surgery to sort out a meniscus fold and tear. They also found stage 4 arthritis so I’m working on avoiding knee replacement for as long as possible. Joining you with the exercise and low carbs! Good luck with your healing ❤️🩹
Good to know you're able to cruise still and keep the right exercise going. It's good fun getting older. I certainly can't do the same things I used to (now 78), but cruising is going to be always on my bucket list of things to look forward to. Take it easy, Tony. Keep off that treadmill.!!!!
Use the elliptical instead of the treadmill. It's better on the knees and hips. It definitely takes some getting used to, but it works great for bad knees.
Treadmills heavily contribute to plantar fascitis as well! That can really keep you off your feet! I'm also in the extra fluffy club. I'm a huge proponent of swimming laps. You work a lot of muscle groups at the same time, stay cool the whole time and zero impact. You can change up your type of stroke at any time. I worked up to swimming a mile a day and I no longer have all of the aches and pains that showed up after using treadmills at the gym! 😊
As my 90 year-old mom keeps reminding me, getting old is not for the weak. Glad you're on the mend and the knee is no big deal :)
Great advice for sure!
NEVER too injured to cruise! Crawl!!!!!
Truth. Went on a cruise with a jacked-up knee this past March. I put cream, Biofreeze, and every pain cream you can think of. I gimped a week with a knee brace.
@@Beth11271 Why not rent a scooter like every other person on a cruise
YEAH!! 😂
Didn’t like it, cause idk if I agree necessarily, but I love your attitude!
🤣
Sounds like Dr Ken is a good guy. Glad to hear your knee is getting better.

My knees are shot after years of high-impact aerobics.
What a cool story from Dr Ken. Sounds like the cancellation and rescheduling of your doctor visit was exactly what you needed. Really interesting fact about the treadmill. I’d love to hear more from any experts out there. Cruise on Tony! 🚢 🎉
What a lovely gift for Dr. Ken from his sister. Glad to hear you're on the mend.
The man with the Rice Krispies knee ... snap, crackle, pop. Healing vibes to you and all who need 'em.
Replace the treadmill with an elliptical. It burns more calories and is just as easy, but it’s very low impact. Much better on the knees.
I don’t agree! An elliptical kills my knees And my hips!!
Swimming is ideal.
Best equipment is the one you will actually use.
Elliptical makes my knees and hips pop every rotation. It's the one machine I have to completely avoid 😢
Walking on the treadmill is so very different than walking on the ground. They are way worse on the knees regardless of your weight! I learned this after knee surgery from both my Dr and pt 😮 ! I am 60 and had my knee replaced a year ago. It was not a fun process at all.
Trade the treadmill in for an elliptical machine. Good luck. 👍
Go on the cruise and enjoy! The Love Boat being on TV is definitely a sign!

I hurt my knee 30+ year's ago. Lets just say I know when weather is coming.
👍🤠 yup. I got 2 bad ones from living a hard countryboy life. Definitely know before the rain comes.

Talk about serendipity. Happy to hear you're good to go!
Glad your knee is feeling better 😊
Glad you got a great report. I’m very happy to hear we will be able to enjoy the Sun Cruise with you.
Good to hear there was good news about your knee issue, Tony. See ya on the Lido!
Keep on healing mate.
Yes! Take time to heal. Cruising will be there when you’re ready. ❤
Stay active! Motion is Lotion!
That's a neat story, Tony. Glad you are on your way to feeling better.😊
Hope it keeps getting better and happy cruising!!!!
Glad to hear your knee isn’t too bad and you have a good dr to help you. Hope you and Jenny have a great cruise!
Glad you are ok and that you can still go on your cruise!! Looking forward to the videos for the Sun Princess.
Love it Tony! Nice update!
Providential doctor's visit indeed! Happy to hear you're on the mend. 😁😁 ..."the love boat soon will be making another run"...🎶
Good News is the only news to get! Story about Dr. Ken and his sister is crazy wonderful and for me, you were brought to where you belong.
Tony, I suffered a torn meniscus on my left knee. Had arthroscopic surgery 2 weeks ago. Doing well with no pain. All the best for you. I hope you get to cruise. I’m going on one next Friday!
Thanks for sharing this story.
What a good doctor. Didnt push extra stuff
That story from the ortho doc was pretty touching. ❤
Anyway glad nothing is torn in your knee.
Keep going on your health journey!!!
So glad for a good report! Looking forward to the Sun Princess content!!
Praying you continue to heal
I had a cortisone shot the day before embarking the Carnival Fantasy in Mobile, and had a knee replacement 30 days before embarking on the Carnival Liberty in Port Canaveral. You are not too injured to cruise!
good news. our grandson works chick fil a here in california and loves his job. thanks for the video and glad all ok.
So happy your knee is healing. God is watching over you.
The pool and stretching…🌻👨🌾🇺🇸

The cortisone shots are the worst, but the results are the best! Glad you’re feeling better.
Sounds like you got a GREAT doc!! Go on that ship and have a blast!
So glad to hear you got a great dr to help you! Enjoy your recovery and cruise...
Use the jogging/walking track on the upper decks of the cruise ship. Better than a treadmill.
Great show,
Big guy here, lost a ton of weight. But…on the treadmill i put the incline on MAX and only walked, no running or jogging. Max incline and a slow walk.
We had a treadmill and when my husband (also a heavy set guy) started having knee issues, we got an elliptical as it's easier on the knees. Heavy, a euphemism for fat?

I will be on that cruise and so looking forward to meeting both you and Don..
My wife and I are going to be on that same cruise. Can’t wait to experience the Sun Princess!! Hopefully I’ll get to say hi! Love your vids!

Just had knee arthroscopic surgery to sort out a meniscus fold and tear. They also found stage 4 arthritis so I’m working on avoiding knee replacement for as long as possible. Joining you with the exercise and low carbs!
Good luck with your healing ❤️🩹
Hi Tony - So glad to hear the good news about your knee. Sending healing prayers and have fun on your next cruise. Love PegEgg
Glad it worked out. Hope you and Jenny enjoy the sun princess it looks gorgeous, better than the sky and I have enjoyed that ship a few times.
Great news! I had that shot for a torn meniscus! It did help but no more treadmill for me either ☹️
Nice to know it’s nothing too serious! You still might consider packing a good knee brace ( that fits properly) for your cruises!
Great news Tony! PHEW!! What a story about Dr. Ken! Love it!
Glad to hear it's not serious
Good to know you're able to cruise still and keep the right exercise going. It's good fun getting older. I certainly can't do the same things I used to (now 78), but cruising is going to be always on my bucket list of things to look forward to. Take it easy, Tony. Keep off that treadmill.!!!!
Get well Tony & keep on cruising ❤
Thanks for the Medicine Show update! So glad you are feeling better!
Glad you will be the cruise
You are wearing one of my favorite shirts Tony, so sharp, wonderful story...extremely happy for you.
Use the elliptical instead of the treadmill. It's better on the knees and hips. It definitely takes some getting used to, but it works great for bad knees.
My physical therapist told me the same thing, no treadmill. Good luck to you
Happy for your good news. I am sure you breathed a big sigh of relief!
Good on you for taking care of your health!
Glad to hear that you’re feeling better!
Such a sweet story from the Dr.; glad you're on the road to recover. God doesn't make mistakes, you were supposed to see Dr. Ken!😀
Just take it easy but nothing cures like excitement.
RIP Dr Ken's Sister.
