As someone who also has vitiligo, what caused mine was likely a combination of stress and genetics. My cousin has it too. In Jackson’s case, I also believe that the stress from his demanding career was a primary cause of his vitiligo. Stress is a very common factor in vitiligo development, and the dermatologist that I went to said this.

You don't bleach forever if you have serious vitiligo. At best, MJ's condition was mild like Terrance J's vitiligo. Any dermatologist will tell you that prescription bleach creams are NOT to be used forever and that it will help blend your vitiligo patches with your natural skin to an even skin tone in 12 to 24 months. MJ was doing the Sammy Sosa which is why he was still bleaching decades after his initial diagnosis. If MJ stopped bleaching his skin would get darker just like Sammy Sosa's skin did.

I remember the first sign of vitiligo on my left hand when I was 11 years old. It spread and got to the point that most of the skin was lighter and would just leave small blotches of the darker. People were mean, children and adults alike. Saying I had patches of dirt on my skin, and making it out like it was a hygiene issue. I went through this for years. And kept getting more sensitive to the sun. Finally, in my 20s I started using skin lightening cream to put on the darker blotches that would be left everytime my skin got lighter. I had to or it would've constantly been uneven and blotchy. Now in my 40s, people still talk about me and say I'm weird, ect. And I recently found out I have Lupus as well. I couldn't imagine going through these things in public with no privacy like he did. It's hard enough just dealing with the people who are suppose to love and accept me that don't. My heart goes out to him and all he went through.

I was told back years ago in the late 80's, 90's, and 2000's, that Michael Jackson's skin had been medium-brown during his youth, but from the mid-1980s gradually grew paler. The change drew widespread media coverage, including speculation that he had been bleaching his skin. His dermatologist, Arnold Klein, said he observed in 1983 that Jackson had vitiligo,a condition characterized by patches of the skin losing their pigment and sensitivity to sunlight. He also identified discoid lupus erythematosus in Jackson. He diagnosed Jackson with lupus that year, and with vitiligo in 1986. Vitiligo's drastic effects on the body can cause psychological distress. Jackson used fair-colored makeup, and possibly skin-bleaching prescription creams, to cover up the uneven blotches of color caused by the illness. The creams would depigment the blotches, and, with the application of makeup, he could appear very pale. Jackson said he had not purposely bleached his skin and could not control his vitiligo, adding, "When people make up stories that I don't want to be who I am, it hurts me."

When Michael confirmed his Vitiligo diagnosis in that interview, all the news channels got a dermatologist to chime in. On CNN, the dermatologist said that treatment depended on how much of the skin lost its color. Above a certain amount, you use a skin bleaching product to get skin to be one color. If there’s only small de-pigmented areas, you try and restore the pigment. As I recall, the dr. didn’t explain how that was done & it didn’t make sense to me seeing how MJ used makeup & clothes until the spots with no pigment became too numerous.

As someone who wears makeup everyday its obvious that he had thick brown foundations on in many of his videos in the 80s even in thriller and “say, say, say”. He was trying to keep the brown complexion up but he reached a point where he couldn’t.
Yea he broke his nose and had surgery but liked it and went back for more after his father ridiculed him his whole life. He had an eye brow lift, chin implants and of course his hair burned off from that commercial. he also started getting bald spots from his autoimmune disease, so those straight hair plugs didn’t help his “i like being black" case. I know its embarrassing but I would’ve held an interview where I revealed some spots of vitilago and the balding. That way he wouldn’t be seen as a freak but rather be given the compassion he deserved.

Michael never intended to turn himself white or deny his ethnicity. He has stated multiple times that he was proud to be a black man. There are plenty of photos where the blotches on his skin are clearly visible. It might have helped to include some of those in this video. I think people assumed he was deliberately changing his skin tone because of the drastic difference from his original color to how pale he became. But it didn't happen over night. It took years for him to get to be the color he was in the last years of his life and even then, there were a lot of darker blotches. I don't know if he really used creams to speed up the process of de-pigmentation, but if he did, it wasn't to "turn himself into a white man." It was to hide the blotches because it was something he was very insecure about. His family members and makeup artist have said he even tried to hide it from them at first. It must feel like you're losing a part of your identity, then imagine people scrutinizing you for it. Michael Jackson was a black American from the day he was born until the day he died, period.

A reminder to anyone out there with vitiligo, piebaldism, birthmarks, etc., you don’t have to cover it up, and there’s nothing wrong with you. If there are people making you feel ashamed of your own skin, they’re the ones who need to change, not you.
Also, for those from cultures with primarily dark/tan skin, regardless of if you have white spots, full albinism, or even choose to bleach your skin, a colour can’t take your culture away from you. Don’t let people tell you you don’t belong. THEY don’t belong in your life.

As for the bleaching part, i can see why he didn't want to have splotches on his skin, he wanted to even it out. I can understand that. @@okitasoji4683 You literally didn't have to say 'literally'. Your sentence can 'literally' stand on its own for me to know that you were being literal. Yes, I'm telling you that Michael wanted to look like that because in his interview with Opera, Michael explained that he was a creative person and he loved living in his own fantasy world. That is not hard to believe because Michael was always eccentric and never conformed to what most so called 'black music' was about in those days, namely rap, hip-hop etc.. However he struggled to really express that feeling as he knew that he would be ostracised by many of his fans that loved his music but not necessarily his persona. Later on in his life he even created his own 'Neverland' was his dream-like world where he had the freedom to express his love and feelings without the judgement of society. Perhaps that's why he always adored the childhood figure because children (preadolescence) don't judge.
Michael didn't care for race, he was not black centric and for him changing his colour to white along with the straightened nose and hair was a preference and not a racial statement. Of course that would upset a lot African Americans because there is a serious inferiority complex within society and having Michael Jackson, one of the greatest musicians of all time, choose to appear white, would seemingly send the wrong message to black people trying to embrace their ethnicity.
And please, do show me a picture of any Asian that appears to look like Michael. I have lived in Asia for over 6 years now and I have not seen any remotely similar as far as racial features go..

I am also suffering from large scale Vitiligo. People, including doctors, are so ignorant about it that I have spent my whole life getting accused if being Caucasian (which I am not) and then getting accused of being mentally ill because I dress according to my culture. I feel as if my identity is being denied and thereby stolen from me. I've had people shouting and screaming at me, accusing me of lying when they asked me what my ethnic origin is and I told them, others have simply made assumptions and entered their assumptions on my medical records, resulting in serious problems because some ethnicities are more prone to certain health issues than others and, when I suffered some of them, this was simply being denied.
