Thanks Brian. I bet there was a big sigh of relief when it turned out to be 99% down to the bolts and you could stand down from preparing yourself for tearing into the head assembly. Here's hoping 2022 brings you plenty more "easy" fixes!
Good troubleshooting! Shows the importance of defining the problem! Replacement bolts way easier than replacing spindle bearings and cheaper too! I could get that 1/2 thou run out fixed by a coat of paint!! 😂
Good stuff as always. I just wish you would show more of your jobs. Even if it’s a still video with no sound I’d love to watch you use those big machines to make big chips.
Hey Brian, On my Giddings and Lewis 25T, before I mounted anything to my facing spindle, I ran a 5/8-11 tap in each of the 4 mounting holes. I used a bottoming tap and I managed to get maybe 1 or 2 threads cut deeper. Anyhow, good catch on those too long mounting screws. ---Doozer
'Nothing like an easy fix to a potentially bothersome problem ! Big thumb's up ! Great way to end the year , by getting a head start on the next one ;)
Gotta love it when it's a simple fix. Glad you slowed down and thought about it before diving in to the spindle! Hope you are well and happy new year, sir. - TZ
Good to see you at years end,,Been great over the pass 364 days hang around the shop with you and all the other creators we follow (yes the Bride watches most as well). Had a bad day Wed, Bride helping me cut up fire wood, and not paying attention, will close out the year with 12 stitches, and first time in 50+ to vist an ER,,,really sucks,,stopped the shaper tare dw for a few days. Will trying to shoot an upload one last video today,,,Have a super New Years tomorrow,,Bear & Sammie.
A great way to end the year and start the day looks like you are on the money with the hbm hope you have a great 2022 from the looks of it you are well on the way to a great start.have you picked up a new camera video quality is much better, as a avid follower thanks for the all the insight to your work hope to see you make progress on all the projects like the d600 this year
You would probably NOT be surprised how often "Is it plugged into a working outlet?" has been the only question I need to ask. Table lamps and computers are very common for this.
Good Mornin Brian. Thanks for sharing your unique attitude and approach to projects, you are a hoot! Happy New Year and keep 'em coming! Oh, what ever happened to the in floor heating system?
It is still hooked to the 5500watt water heater. It keeps the shop about 20 deg over what ever it is outside. Since I am usually only in the shop at night after work it is usually 40-50 degrees in there. It beats working outside!! I have been researching an air to water heat pump as I could get a lot more heat for the same money with that!
We have an older 5" g&L at work like that with the dual spindles. One drawback to ours is the slowest feed on the spindle is .010" We have three newer 5" G&L machines that only have the one spindle and they have .005 as the slowest feed on the spindle. Everybody would much rather run the newer machines. Does yours have a slower feed than .010" Also the older machine has a max speed of something like 350 rpm on the large spindle. The newer ones go up to around 1200 rpm if I remember correctly
Great job, Brian. Was wondering if putting a 1-2 thou shim on the low side would even that out? Is it worth the effort or is 5 thousandths total runout acceptable for an HBM?
Hey is it possible to 180 flip the drive gears so they mesh in the reverse direction to eliminate the whine ? Know the machine has ran in one direction its whole life so flip gears run on new teeth! So will whine in reverse!
Or just change gears to a different speed. They all sound different. Camera picks it up more than I do. As long as it keeps cutting good holes it can sound However it wants.🤠
Saved a 316 JD from junk yard this summer! Got it going yesterday!
Bottomed Bolts have burned me many times. Glad you found them!
Divide and conquer, the most fundamental process of troubleshooting. I hope we get to see how much the cut improves!

You dodged a bullet there !!! Happy New Year , Cheers .
Happy New Year Brian. Good find on the problem replacing the bolts is an easy fix.
Would have been was if I didn’t have to turn the heads down to a custom size so they would fit but easy enough for a shop with a lathe. 😎

Good Mornin Brian. Thanks for sharing your unique attitude and approach to projects, you are a hoot! Happy New Year and keep 'em coming! Oh, what ever happened to the in floor heating system?
Good question ⁉️ Last I remember, it was running and keeping the floor in the 60's.
It is still hooked to the 5500watt water heater. It keeps the shop about 20 deg over what ever it is outside. Since I am usually only in the shop at night after work it is usually 40-50 degrees in there. It beats working outside!! Its amazing how well things work when you put the right size bolts in. Good job Brian you saved yourself a lot of work!! Happy New Year!!

Have you fired up the under slab heater yet this year? I still have to run 2 AC's....
It is on from November thru April

I think I'm going to have tobuild a facing head for my horizontal. Can't find one for mine that will be a challange.

The spindle feed is fairly fast. I always do precision work feeding with the table though so it doesn’t matter.
@@bcbloc02 Where we really dont like the fast feed is while drilling with the spindle.
Happy. New year Brain.
Have you finished insulating the ceiling!
Nope. Got to have a ceiling first
Great job, Brian. Was wondering if putting a 1-2 thou shim on the low side would even that out? Is it worth the effort or is 5 thousandths total runout acceptable for an HBM?
Like I said it doesn’t matter using a single point tool as there would be no run out.
Hey is it possible to 180 flip the drive gears so they mesh in the reverse direction to eliminate the whine ? Know the machine has ran in one direction its whole life so flip gears run on new teeth! So will whine in reverse!

Hey Brian what's you doing? Where's Bailey?

Might've been where Baily had his stash of bonz and one crumbled. Look for evidence on the floor. Happy almost and scrape the Boss for me! GBWYall!
probably got all kinds of spare time now that you don't have to tear that apart
You funny! 😆
That comes from being a tractor mechanic, Check things out properly before tearing into things.
It's always the stupid simple things that can trip you up and if you're not careful, send you down that rabbit hole.
"A lot of floppy" is never good in a machine tool.
Great tips! Enjoyed watching, Happy New Year!
