Alligators all over lower South Carolina, everywhere. I HATE alligators. 1.5 years ago my husband and I moved 30 minutes south of Greenville. We love it. Friendly people. Conservative mind set overall. Which is the main reason we moved frim LIBERAL Washington state. Glad to know not everyone in our country has lost their mind. Thankful for places like South Carolina!!

My wife and I built a house in Horry County in 2021. We are about 25 miles from North Myrtle Beach. 4 bedroom/2 bath on a half acre property for around $200,000. We still live and work in North Jersey. We wouldn’t even be able to buy a 35x50 lot in Jersey for that price! 2026 we will officially be South Carolinians.

We lived in Taylor’s for 8 years back in the early 70’s. We loved Greenville. My wife is a native Tennessean. We eventually relocated back to Tennessee, and that’s been our home since 1977. We still vacation in South Caroline. Charleston being our favorite city for vacations. South Carolina is our second favorite State. Tennessee is home and our #1 favorite State to live in.

I was born and raised in Charleston, enjoyed the beaches and lived about 6 miles inland on the Svannah Hwy, in an area known as West Ashley. If you like heat, humidity and bugs, then Charleston is for you. After I graduated from college I got a job in Greenville and have been there for the last 42 years. This is the opposite of the low country with the mountains, four seasons, and great weather. We get about 6-8 inches of snow total for the winter, which is not too much, but enough to play in. Also, being closer to the big cities of Charlotte and Atlanta is an advantage Charleston does not have. We have a 16,000 seat arena which host concerts, major sporting events, including minor league hockey and NCAA Women's Basketball Regionals.

I agree with you. I really like Greenville for all the same reasons you mentioned. I wish my family could have moved there (from Anderson🙄) instead of to Charlotte NC.
I cannot live with the humidity or the bugs (they NEVER DIE, even in Charlotte), so now I live in Maine❤.
I sometimes miss Greenville, though. What a great town.

I doubt Greenville is any cooler in the summer but you can school me if you want. I'm from Charleston. Heat and humidity are off the charts but at least we have a sea breeze which gives us a lot of relief. I lived in South Central Texas for a year with heat, humidity, and the air dead as a doornail most of the time. That was substantially more uncomfortable. The sea breeze is wonderful and something known about for centuries, especially before air conditioning. While summers are hot and humid, unless you work outside you just go from one air conditioned place to your air conditioned car, to another air conditioned place. So, what does it really matter? Yes, we have bugs and you either need professional pest control or like I do, I use combat on the bases of my doors and base boards about once a quarter. I rarely see any bugs. Also, newer properties seal up better with newer construction methods so its a lot more difficult for the creepy crawlies to get inside. Charleston has enormous charm, beauty and history. I believe four signers of the Declaration of Independence are buried at St Phillips cathedral. Either St. Phillips or St. Michael's, I don't recall. I've spent many years in southern California which has probably the best weather on earth. While I appreciate the blue skies, low humidity and very mild temps in California they come with a price such as 35 million people, an insane state government, high taxes, drugs, and crime...I think Charleston beats California hands down...

I grew up in Beaufort, born on Lady's island. Work Moved me Charleston, to Sumter, Columbia then back to Beaufort and then up north for several years Baltimore and Harrisburg when I had enough of that I was determined to get back to my home state. Beaufort was my target but missed and I've been living in Greenville now for 10 years, but the salt water is in my veins and it calls to me so I go home to camp, fish, shrimp, gig flounder and swim at Hunting island. That little tiny island on the right just before you go across the bridge to hunting island was where I spent many school vacations at, just a shack but it was paradise, tin roof palmetto trees crabing and shark fishing and water skiing. You left out Lake Joccassee in Greenville, it's a beautiful mountain lake so clear you can see 50 ft down

My sister and BIL live in Beaufort. It’s lovely actually they live on Dataw Island. I love going to visit the community they live in has it not only a heated pool but one that’s like cooled in summer. They’re from Chicago so they totally love it if they still want to get out of there in July and August but in the winter it’s fabulous it’s been a lot of times Stack either valuables on top of the dining room table before they go to stay with my brother in Cary North Carolina. My brother was from Orange County California so they were very happy to move until my sister and her dog and her husband come and stay regularly for the hurricane season. How are you I will be moved to is that they don’t allow fences and most of the island is a golf course so they have tiny little yards and everybody has to walk their dog which I would think would be a pain and you can’t just looking out to run around because there’s gators out there. I’ve been tempted to go in the summer because they’re right next to a stop on the golf course ice and water and the ice is exactly like sonic ice I think that may be happier than anything else I should drive the golf cart to that little spot to get big cups of ice for my day. Doesn’t take much but they don’t have a sonic so if you’re addicted to good ice you got to find good ice!

Nice job but I think you way overemphasized the Hurricane threat. The last major Hurricane was Hugo in 1989 which did enormous damage. Most of what we have had since then are near misses. The storms usually track up the Gulf stream about a hundred miles offshore. Some of the minor storms that actually hit Charleston area where I live include Matthew in 2015 I think. We didn't even lose power in Mt Pleasant. I'm on James Island now and I lost power during Dorian for about a day. If you are concerned with flooding just don't buy in a flood zone. Simple enough. Flood zones are distinguished by risk, obviously. In Mt Pleasant I was in a flood zone but the house had never flooded even in Hugo. However, downtown Charleston got many feet of water from Hugo. Many downtown restaurants kept a water mark on the interior walls for years after. Some probably still do. In summary, I think the media and government have turned hurricanes into the boogeyman which is far less of a factor than most realize. Most people here don't evacuate unless a large hurricane is imminent. Something like a Cat 4.

I grew up in Spartanburg, SC not far from Greenville, about 3.5 hrs to Charleston. Dirty Myrtle, it used to be a great place. A lot of these places are really nice, just not this one. I've lived here for the better part of my life and I was born in 1963, you do the math, all but 10 years. I moved to Washington state and would come home 3 times a year and most of the time would always visit Charleston.

Grew up in Spartanburg but live in Seattle. Would be a lot cheaper to go back to SC but I have never wanted to go back. Matter of fact could not wait to get out. Now I cannot handle the summers east of the Rockies. The only good thing about Spartanburg is it is about 60 miles from Asheville, NC, a really nice city and Beautiful. Greenville is nice, 100% better than Spartanburg for any reason you can think of. When I spent some time down there around 2004 when my mom passed away I preferred going to Greenville than Charlotte even though Charlotte is a much larger city. I'm surprised the list did not include Georgetown and Beaufort. Lot of history in Georgetown , some very nice looking old neighborhoods and it is on the coast. Beaufort is a gorgeous place on the river near the ocean, not far from Savannah, GA.(Go there!) Beaufort has many Beaufort mansions that were built prior to the Civil War. Beaufort was not destroyed during the war. If you like streets covered with big oak trees with Spanish Moss hanging down, this area is wonderful. If you have read some Pat Conroy then you have an idea what this area is like. Highly recommend the Prince of Tides.

Have lived in the PeeDee region for close to 20 years. Horton builds almost all the houses in MB area. If you don't like traffic its not the place to move. Almost all neighborhoods in the MB area have HOA's. They are a plague. Housing prices start on the low end at 1/4 mil. That is for a cheaply built home on a postage stamp size lot. My suggestion is to come during the middle of summer and tourist season and rent for at least 3 months. Look around with a critical eye. Didn't take me long to figure out that all roads (essentially) lead to 501. Infrastructure is sorely lacking.
