It's funny how everyone present in Montréal seems to side with Bret and everyone that wasn't sides with Vince. It's almost like those that weren't there don't have the full story and, thus, don't understand that it wasn't just about losing the title in Canada. The Shawn factor, the disrespect Bret had been shown over the previous year regarding his contract situation, the literal breach in contract for the creative control clause. So much that some of them are ignoring.
Let's also remember that Bret is leaving a job where he makes $1.5 million a year to go work for the competitor where he'll make $2.5 million. It was an embarrassing situation that could have easily been avoided and everyone is to blame. All parties involved with the "Incident" in 1997 Montreal, deserved blame. There were no babyfaces in this situation.
@@Liam_Graer nah man Curtain Call was 1996. Fingerpoke was 1999. Can't think what happened in 1992? Regarding #1, if Bret had merely refused to drop the title then he would have been in the wrong regardless of his reasons. But what ppl forget, is that he willingly shredded a 20 year contract of guaranteed money just to help Vince out of a financial jam. I doubt Hulk or HBk or any top guy would have done that. Therefore there should be some give and take. Vince owed him something in return imo. And if all he wanted was a different opponent, then so be it.
That's not how the business works. You don't get to pick & chose who & when, where( unless you have some creative control)you will drop a title. Especially when you are on your way out the company. With Brett father once having had a wrestling company he knew this. Everybody does the "job" on your way out.
Vince owed him? How about the millions of dollars on the previous contracts? How about all the titles he won? Or making him a star? Get outta here with that
I knew wrestling was bs since the 60s when several wrestlers wrestled in 1 town/city/territory as 1 person from some city/town/country height 6'9 weight 300lbs. Same person different town/territory different name, height, weight, from somewhere else.
The crucification angle was also done in Championship Wrestling from Florida with Kevin Sullivan crucifying Super Star Billy Graham. Was on youtube last time I checked and mentioned in Graham's autobiography.

I don't really blame wwf for continuing the ppv. I think if they were forced to make that decision now, they'd probably stop the show. They had minutes to make the call. All these years later & there's still no unanimous opinion on what they should've done.
Probably? I'm amazed he didn't get more blowback from that in 99. Its horrible. Unfortunately in sports there's been worse. I mean wasn't there a soccer world cup or European cup Final or something where tens of fans died from stands collapsing or something and they still went on with the game? I'm not excusing Vince. Yeah imo only doink looks like a complete goof for his takes. Not for having the takes, but for being a hypocrite but more importantly having that "holy than thou" personality. First he gets mad at Nash for calling wrestling fake but on the other side of his mouth he's wagging the finger at Bret for not doing what the promoter says. So calling the business fake is fighting words, but literally fighting against the promoter is a no no as well? Wtf? Plus doink would be a gutless coward in my book if he does what he said he would do in Bret's situation. NEVER FORGET McMahon reneged on the contract that he agreed on. Then don't forget it wasn't losing in Canada that was the problem originally. NEVER FORGET If Shawn wasn't acting like an asshole, and just would've said "I would do the same for you" to Bret after Hart said to Michaels' I have no problem dropping the title to you. Hart had to defend his "manhood" after Vince's Indian giver (sorry) ways with the contract and Shawn saying I would not do the honors for you if the roles were reversed. Bret had to cling to something so he choice well I can't lose in Canada but it was more like screw Shawn I don't wanna lose to that prick. If it was taker I'm sure he would've dropped in the Montreal easily. Tl;dr doink is a teacher's pet and should learn why Bret did what he did instead of kissing McMahon's ass right away, you don't always do what the authority wants.
Bret did what he did bc he’s a mark for himself. No other reason. And the nash comments and Montreal are completely entirely 10,000% unrelated. They literally have NOTHING to do with each other. You look like a fuckin dummy…
Taker had the best solution, Brett was willing to lose to Taker but Vince and his ego had to have it his way and have his boy toy win. Brett had more an issue w Michaels (Deservedly so, he was an asshat) than losing in Canada
Chyna saying Vince Russo winning the WCW Title isn’t controversial shows her lack of understanding & history of the WCW title which was really the old NWA World Heavyweight Title and proving that she was not a fan of wrestling growing up
Some of the wrestlers saying "that's a tough one" or "that's a hard call to make" regarding the Owen incident...how? If you can't draw the line at a man falling to his death on live television in a packed arena, where do you draw it? Money is money, but that should go out of the window when one of your employees dies in such a horrific manner. Would giving out refunds for the PPV really put that much of a dent in the WWF circa 1999? I strongly doubt it. The whole 'the show must go on' attitude doesn't hold up when a man has died. Out of respect for his fans, his friends and most importantly his family, the feed should have been cut.
This vid is first time I ever heard about a crucifixion in ECW. I remember the Undertaker doi g it to Austin and Stephanie, but never heard any one mention anything about a similar action in ECW. Therefore by definition, if almost no one knows about it, it can not be one of most controversial moments.

"The Show Must go on" is a phrase for a reason. There's been far more horrid things that happened to people at live shows than falling to their deaths. Some have been mauled and torn to bits, murdered on stage, etc. You are not worthy of the title "Entertainer" unless you understand and agree with this Bret Hart said his brother would want the show to go on for his fans. His wife is the only person who disagreed and has been trying to rob people the opportunity to see Owen wrestle. Basically stating Owen hated the fans and wrestling. She forgets his love for the business and expects other to agree with her. Stop devaluing Owens LOVE for the sport.
@@erikurizita6702 The "Show Must Go On" refers to a slight fall or a flubbed line not if someone is killed. They should've stopped the show, not only so a PROPER investigation could be done right away, but to be respectful of Owen and his family as well as the other entertainers who suffered a shock. You have no right to speak harshly about Martha Hart who after losing her husband, was countersued by the WWF when she requested proper redress for her and her family's loss. I don't care how much of a fan you are, your feelings don't supersede her or her kids' wishes. Owen's matches are still available today for you to watch whenever. The End.
When someone accidentally falls from the ceiling and dies it becomes a crime scene so for forensics it should’ve stopped the show. This the show must go on because of the money they would lose for stopping the PPV. It’s like saying if someone had shot and killed Owen in the ring they should’ve arrested the shooter get Owen’s body out the ring and continue the show

I actually own the entire "Wrestling's Most" series on DVD and while I did enjoy them, the worst thing about them was that they asked the fans on what they felt was the worst/most despised over etc.. about the topics. The problem there is that only ECW marks and marks in general seemed to have voted on every topic, specifically when it comes to "the most over baby faces" "most over managers" and "wrestling's most despised" Most of you will agree with me once they upload them to RUclips. The picks are ridiculous and they scream marks, completely ignoring reality.
Yeah Raven was one of the most hated heels in the list (like 3 or 4 if i remember correctly). You can tell by all the reactions that it was a stupid answer
Or James Mitchell being in the top 5 managers. He’s great but not top 5

That was just as bad imo, only difference was WWF was doing better TV at the time compared to when Russo won it so it basically gets a slide.

I am a Christian and I am not offended by the Raven/Sandman Crucifixion bit. And that's because Raven wasn't using it to mock Jesus but to correlate Sandman's sacrifice for his family (that Raven had brainwashed and was using against him) to correlate Sandman's sacrifice with Jesus' sacrifice. Of course Chyna thought Russo being champion was a good thing. She was clueless when it came to the business. Rip Chyna, you were a sweet soul. However, she was a tad delusional especially about how talented or over she was. She *p*
Sunny, on the other hand is the opposite of Chyna, a difficult person but she knows exactly how terribly the Russo champ idea was and how it ruined WCW.
Nope.
Well russo wrote all kinds of stuff for China, winning against men constantly and titles. So of course she will defend him no matter how idiotic his other ideas were. China isn't a bad person at all, doesn't actually translate into anyone thinking she could work in the ring.

Looking at the Top 5 Controversial Moments makes me question the voters. Ain't no way in hell that Vince Saying "Wrestling is Fixed" is more controversial than Black Saturday or even Vince Russo/Hulk Hogan lawsuit or Madusa trashing the Women's Title or how about Shane Douglas throwing the NWA title, which help start ECW or even the Mass Transit incident. Hell, I would include Plane Ride from Hell in there.
Yeah the whole wrestling is fake is not even controversial. It’s easy to ses how fake it is
The thumbnail involving someone that "allegedly" committed manslaughter should kinda be at the top.
you got a time machine then boss?
as these are from almost twenty years ago if I had to guess .....so sunny (whom I presume you mean) had another forty arrests to go before she got arrested for manslaughter boss
so kayfabe commentaries didn't put Sunny's driving abilities as an option for fans to vote for the wrestlings most controversial moment?!?
also she was driving from a supermarket to her home wasn't she ??
so not from a rasslin event when she finally killed somebody.
grrrr not sure what I'm even complaining about anymore .....but yeah sunny shouldn't have been driving drunk
same as USO A or B and Jeff Hardy shouldn't ever be driving again
can we not learn from the mistakes made with sunny now n skip the next ten DUI arrests for Jeff n USO and then avoid when they eventually kill somebody as they inevitably will..

The reason this was so controversial is that WCW was in the middle of collapsing and this was one of his ideas.
It’s funny to hear Chyna take up for Bret when the only reason she’s in the business is because of Shawn and Hunter
Billy Gunn looks like best friend material
The most controversial moment is obviously the Kevin Nash incident that took place in the sweltering summer of 92

@@sashalove83 but he did have creative control the last 60 days of his contract
Vince owed him? How about the millions of dollars on the previous contracts? How about all the titles he won? Or making him a star? Get outta here with that

Wrong.
After the money from the raised price ppvs started rolling in, Vince asked Bret to stay. Bret asked what they had planned for him, and said no.

Honestly my biggest problem with that was why owen was up there in the first place. For nothing. For stupid shit.
@@hellohell77 yes. Stupid sh!t. I never liked wcw doing it with Sting. I didn't even like HBK doing it at WM 12. Plus, u add in using a quick release meant for a sail ⛵ & disaster was inevitable. The wwe was sued but I always thought the company they used for the stunt should've been liable too.
@@raidernation7427 at least sting and to some extent hbk, there were good reasons to do it. And for all the shit WCW gets for the dumb crap they did, it looked like sting was pretty safe during his dropdowns. And it looked cool when he did it, in 97 at least. The owen hart had no rhyme or reason except to make him look stupid. They didn't like he was rejecting doing storylines like having a relationship with debra and probably took out a little of bret exposing them on owen. Vince can be capable of good things. But the whole owen saga in 98-99 showed his dark side. Then the way he took very little responsibility for the death was just disturbing. I do agree though, the company they used should've had some responsibility. Most of it was on vince and the other vince too. I wouldn't be surprised if Russo was involved in making those storylines.
I am surprised that they had the option to keep the show going. I wold have thought that the authority's wold have shut the show down to do a proper investigation.

Therefore by definition, if almost no one knows about it, it can not be one of most controversial moments.

with the Owen hart scenario. I'd say its more controversial that Jim Ross telling everyone over commentary that Owen had died.... show must go on. but Owen's death should've been stated later that night. love me hate me but I believe Owen would've thought "the show must go on".
Those that knew him best disagree
"The Show Must go on" is a phrase for a reason. There's been far more horrid things that happened to people at live shows than falling to their deaths. Some have been mauled and torn to bits, murdered on stage, etc. You are not worthy of the title "Entertainer" unless you understand and agree with this
Bret Hart said his brother would want the show to go on for his fans.
