The Northernmost Town in Iceland -Raufarhöfn - With Appropriate Blues Music

- The northernmost town on the Icelandic mainlandI is the background for this good Blue Blues music but the video was a part of what I brought back from my summer tours but I have a mini documentary in the making about this village for my town series. Raufarhöfn is one of those places that suffered a rather cruel fate after the herring was overfished but this used to be one of the largest herring town, Iceland's Klondyke.
Bankrupt factories and decaying docks became the hallmark of the town for decades to come and it's only now when most of the old garbage is gone and the town is trying re re-invent it self. The harsh climate there will however ensure that this will never became like the ordinary Icelandic tourist town, but it's sure to make an impact in tourism for reasons like how oddly photogenic it is, how friendly the people are, and how remote it is, ensuring a new kind of experience for travellers.
My full mini doc will be online soon and the footage I will be using in it was shot during way better days but this foggy day was my "failed attempt" but this is however how Raufarhöfn tend to look from time to time, and I never planned to sugarcoat anything on my channel. The town is busy, it's hard to find an apartment there despite the lowest real estate price in Iceland for a long time and all who are not lazy can have a job, or so told me a local person the other day.
The Arctic Henge Sundial was a major construction that turned out to be quite successful attempt to bring in more tourists and it adds a little mystical theme to the harsh environment and it' a great photo subject, not lest during summer solstice when the sun never sets around here. Raufarhöfn is just waking up again and I'm glad to see that since I have many memories from this place.

Greetings from Iceland. Gylfi
Great video as always Gylfi. I spent a night in Raufarhöfn last year. To give you a sense of how people there (and everywhere in Iceland FTM) are friendly, here is a small anecdote: In the morning, I'm at the local campground (you can see it at 2:01 in the video), I wake up with both my phone and car batteries dead. No one in sight, I walk up to the road, and see a worker by himself digging a trench with a backhoe excavator. I explain my predicament. He makes a phone call, no answer... He says don't worry, I'll come back. I can't say a word, he has already left with his truck towards the town 500m away... 10 minutes later, he comes back with 2 coffees, gives me one and says: "My friend did not pick up the phone, he was making coffee, and he apologises" (for what?). "He'll be here shortly". 10 minutes later, the friend arrives with another guy ("the mechanic") in an old Citroen C15, they hook up my Jeep to the small car, start their engine and rev it up to 4000RPM: "Now start your engine". And voila! They kept the cables hooked up for several minutes to be sure, with the Citroen roaring in the background. When I tried to reward them for the coffee and jump starting my car, they said: "No worries, we help each other here up in the North". We exchanged may be 10 sentences total. Their English was basic, but had I spoken Icelandic, I don't think they would have been more talkative ;-) People in Iceland are fantastic: few words, but a big heart!
Side note: the road worker was actually installing optic fibre cables for residential internet access. They may be all the way up north but they're well connected... He told me they want to attract remote workers to boost the economy. May be I should move there...
@@garz75 What a great story! Lovely kind people. Makes your heart happy!
Gylfi you are The Soul Man of Iceland for sure! Every vid you make has the perfect music. This is exceptional! Thank you for your creative genious in all of your work. The world will remember you, sir.
Especially on Harlan Street
When the Arctic henge will be completed?
Beautiful. The footage, the mood, the city, the music…
Thanks for watching :)
Thankyou Gylfi. You got to Love the Bluess
Yes I do :)
Watched it twice in a row. Brilliant choice of music, what a treat!
Thank you - i really miss Iceland…
Ah Raufarhöfn
What a sight to behold. Been there both times I went to Iceland, both times in winter, and I loved it. Like the whole of north and east Iceland as well as the westfjords, it calms you down since you are the only person on the street for miles. It's one of the places I'm going to visit every time I go to Iceland.
I really hope to see the Artic Henge finished some day, I saw a plan on how it's supposed to look like at some point, but I can't find it anywhere anymore.
Scenery & music - a perfect match 🤩
Many thanks :)
I wondered about the music. Then I saw the car and the sign and it all made sense. Nice work!
Your videos never disappoint Gylfi. Killer jams!
I was looking for road music when i came across this, and knew exactly what to edit with it :)
Haar is the Scots word we use for sea fog.
Our summer has mainly been full of haar this year or just grey on grey on grey 😊
Love the music
Enjoy :)
Great video, Gylfi. The fog/mist gives it and ethereal feel...
Btw.. Was it you say between the slabs controlling the drone 😂??
Pretty land and bluesy blues.😊
Enjoy :)
Thanks for sharing this foggy video with the appropriate music. Thanks also for the explanation about what the failed industry was. I was trying to guess what they could produce there.
No trees, no people, no visible movement until the last few seconds, when the last man leaves town in his pickup truck!
Always interesting to see different places and listen to good music.
i saw several people, and cars moving. what you on about? 😁
@@sarahlouise7163 My eyesight hasn't improved with age, and I was watching on a tiny phone screen.
Ah, the REAL Iceland, the not-for-tourists Iceland. Great video!
Thanks! 😃 that was the plan
I've been there for 2 days this summer. A beautiful place. Walked around Rauðanes and saw gulls trying to get some of the fishes a seal had caught. During half an hour the seal teased the gulls by diving and coming up again, showing them his fishes.
Even the road leading to Raufarhöfn is amazing. I like the eastern part of Iceland with its lonely gravelroads very very much and this year's journey amazed me even more than the ones of the last two years even if they were very very beautiful.
I surely go back to thus town and stay at "The Nest" - very very kind owners

Fog is exceedingly rare where I live, yet I adore it. Thank you, Gylfi! 🥰
You’re welcome 😊
Thank you!
I miss Iceland...
Thank you too!
As others already said: Great match of pictures and music. And what a sweet bit of blues that was! Blues is a genre that bores me blind most of the time, but that tune was brilliant! Great choice!
Just shows you, Iceland also has a less photogenic area . Like all countries. Thanks for showing us. So interesting 😊
My pleasure 😊
I was there in Iceland in 2009 and loved the food and the friends I now have. There love for American muscle.
Welcome back :)
Exceptional scenery and music.
Many thanks :)
The Cadillacs I did not expect to see 🤩 …also, so many walls there begging for murals 🎨✨
It's a fun place for a camera :)
My family members left Iceland many years ago and founded what is called New Iceland in Canada and I am very proud of my ancestors and blessings to you and the wonderful work you do on your Channel
Continue to love your videos. With this one I should have had a hot tea while watching it. I will next time!!
🤗 enjoy
Good video and good music. You looked a bit rough at the end though! LOL.
'Chillout Blues' is right - I thought I'd found a long lost Dire Straits track for a moment!
We visited Arctic Henge in 2023 and had coffee and cake in the cafe in Ruufarhöfn before going up to the lighthouse in our UK registered car.
Plan to drive back in 2026 for the Total Eclipse on August 12th in the far west.
Love watching your channel
Awesome & mysterious! ❤❤
Enjoy :)
This video makes me homesick
And I thank you muchly for all you're hard work. also. Thanks for the name of the song, you take the cake.
Thank you too!
Nice Gylfi, thanks. The "Chillout Blues"made me think of old Pink Floyd. Great music with a great video.
@melodyszadkowski5256, I hope you watching. No my son hasn't started the video yet. Best wishes!!
The song grabbed me instantly :) Thanks for watching :)
Loved this ❤🎵🎶🎸🥁
Enjoy :)
Really good amazing music
Enjoy :)
Very nice thank you
Welcome :)
very cool!
Welcome :)
Very nice vid , loved the music too !
All the best Jules 💕
Thank you so much 🤗
Oh hell yes! This is my jam for sure! Well done Gylfi!
Awesome! ✨✨
Looks like a great tourist destination to me, but probably only in summer. And I bet you’d need to rent one of those camper vans like Jewels did on her All Things Icelandic channel.
Perfect choice of music for this video! Perfect.
Glad you think so!
So interesting, love it!
Saell Gylfi minn! Åhugavert eins og alltaf, takk. Beztu kvedhjur Billi.
Takk Billi minn :)
Excellent video and music!😊
Many thanks!
Totally awesome video! I love blues! Very interesting views of Iceland too. If I could travel I would love to visit 😍
Thank you very much and welcome to Raufarhöfn :)
I drove through there in April this year and saw the Arctic Henge installation! Looks different with fog and no snow
Iceland has many faces :)
Excellent video and music!
Many thanks!
Like the Haarlem sign as it’s also a town nearby Amsterdam 🌷🧡🇳🇱
Cool, we must have passed that on our way to the most northern point at the lighthouse of Hraunhafnartangi :). Visited Arctic Henge too :)
Was that guy at the end spying on you? Also, did you find a good Icelandic hotdog there? Cool video 😎👍
❤
Thank you, Gylfi. The sign said "Haarlem" and we were seeing it through the haar! Made me chuckle!
Gyifi, production quality is top notch! ❤❤❤
Many thanks, appreciated :)
@@JustIcelandic ❤️❤️❤️
Thanks Gylfi always cool to see your gorgeous country and scenery you got some unusual buildings as well they look so much nicer than whe boring house's we got in the uk.
Great music too.
Thank you Gylfi. We have a Samon Hatchery here where I live. To bad they can't do a Herring hatchery there. I always love your video's. ❤❤❤ Sandy in Far Northern California
So that's how your guys make the moss! To be fair, i had a few days like that there. If ya' walk to fast, you drown!
Ah so there is were the Artic Henge is, cool to know when i'm out and about next year hopefully, and going to visit my best friend in Iceland 🙏💚
Welcome to Iceland :)
@@JustIcelandic maybe we can catch up and talk about the evolution of Iceland's future also over a nice ice cream 😁
Hello Gylfi, I saw a sign with Haarlem on it that’s a city in the Netherlands. Greetings from the Netherlands
Hello, Gylfi. It's been so enjoyable watching this new serie. Thanks a lot.
Atmospheric. Well Done. Why the flat roofs? Surely snow presents a heavy load ...??
Bad habit widely practiced for a long time
I asked myself the same.
The music is great. The question is when will Icelanders start building pretty houses?
Arctic Henge looked cool in the fog, but what the hell is that last shot with Binocular Guy?
The head is a basketball with a hat, the local humour I guess :)
@@JustIcelandic Its hilarious :)
Nice I've it on repeat .🥳 I tried hardest to get up there v/early october late sept but jist ran out of time with cloudy skies we had to give it a miss. Excusse to return Aurora overhead with the henge below. I do know it has no history
🙌
At first, I wondered about the blues music theme, then saw the two vehicles - LOL! At 0:57, do you know what is stored in those two concrete silos?
No sugarcoating here for sure. Let's hope they can find a new business model to build upon!
I think they will :)
There is a city in the Netherlands called 'Haarlem' :-)
I guess the collapse of the herring industry over 50 years ago really affected a lot of these northern coastal towns.
Yes and this was the second largest herring town.....left in ruins after the herring era
@@JustIcelandic I also remember the great video you did on Hjalteyri a couple of years ago. Similar story. Appreciate these historical backgrounds.
With a sign from Haarlem. A small piece of the Netherlands in Iceland?
Beautiful scenery deserves beautiful music. Maybe you could reach out to Icelandic artists and feature local music.
Whatever you decide will be here to watch. Can always put on music and mute the volume, but standard royalty free blues was not the soundscape.
What about the artwork/sculpture at the end. Is that a statement? Or is it something silly for everyone to see? Another great video of yours. Thanks.
The music suited the mist and cloud.
I guess those two large tanks near the start were for fish oil, and so show just how big the fishing industry was.
That is one depressing city. Thanks for sharing.
I think "bleak" is the perfect word. I keep looking for quaint, but only find bleak. Sorry!
@@minimaker5600 😂 😂
Welcome :)
That is not a city is a fishing town, maybe where your fish comes from ,people are working hard in there, nothing depressing about it,homeless people in big city’s are depressing to watch ,not his just a small foggy town !
Iceland is only for the brave, the place is beautiful in the summer ,fishing towns looked like that,in that part of the world maintaining buildings is hard ,especially when you have a winter that long, thanks, love the music !
Dear Gylfi, it is passible to show the place, which you are filming, as a dot on a map at the beginnjng?
I am very curious about the 'Haarlem' sign. Did you know there is a Dutch city with that name?
So many Dutch people are watching this channel! This summer we were in Isaforður and it said Amsterdam on one of the houses😂. Yeah. I'm dutch too
Nice video, Out of interest how often is it foggy over there? Do people suffer bouts of illness after it's been foggy?
Mi-ar fi plăcut să trăiesc în Islanda
Sometimes, I just want the guitar to keep playing 🎸
It's a good one :)
.💙.
💙
i saw a dutch flag in the beginning on that building
Might be the business owner, just don't know..it was closed :)
Everything has already been said. 🙂
Haarlem? Thats a Dutch city...
Might be Dutch humour in town :)
@@JustIcelandic I guess so 🙂
Further north than Grímsey
?
Haarlem? (00:32)
0:32
Dutch inhabitants?
Not sure...if so, it's the cafe owner
Then the cafe owner maybe comes from Haarlem . A town on the Netherlands between Amsterdam and the Northsea
