  • Brightly coloured folk art crafted in a remote Mexican town can sell for thousands of dollars.
Months can be spent creating the fantastical wooden creatures, called the Alebrijes.

This is a wonderful reportage!! It really shows Zapotec mysticism and craft at its highest level. Just one small detail, these are NOT alebrijes as the subtitles and Description suggest. He talks about representing his "nahual". Nahuales are spirit animals and are not the same as alebrijes. Alebrijes are modern creations that combine real and fastastical creatures. As a form of art, they relatively new (about 70 years) but have become famous worldwide and are really striking. The tradition depicted here goes back for milennia. These pieces of art do not abide by the principles of alebrijes even if they look somewhat similar. :)

Mexico's untold historic traditional carving turned into modern art with additional designs, and for more reasons than you're likely to hear from one person.
