Nobody handed out free housing, cellphones, 3 meals a day, free education, debit cards, etc. All of these benefits provided by us American taxpayers. Building? In Florida they turned an old hotel into a drug rehab facility (with a long history of guests, famous names most know).
It's been open a couple years now. Find old buildings with good bones and renovate, hotels are the perfect set up to give a place to sleep, but one must work to get food on your table. It's like a step up program this the final step before returning to a subsidized a facility that supports independent living. None of these places require million dollar budget to offer housing to get off the street. In addition to giving to someone, they need to work on why they are homeless to begin with. The "why" they are homeless is why therapy is essential!

My husband and I and our 3 kids were homeless in NorCal for 6 months but because we were and are not drug users or bad people, we got no help. We still can’t rent here in Ca and my husband then was severely hurt and he passed away so now I am a widow with 3 teenage boys trying to figure out things my husband used to do. We are leaving Ca for good.

In Seattle, FY2015, they spent enough money on "homelessness" to cut a check for $110,000.00 for every man, woman and child. Less then 4% went to them.

I agree Nez. I live in Calif 87 yrs and I’m so sad to see what it has become.
I used to work in downtown Los Angeles. From talking to the homeless there every day and other places in LA, I was told by most of them that they do not trust the government and do not want a home. A good number of them were veterans. Another large group in the downtown Los Angeles area are from other states; they were given a one-way bus ticket to Los Angeles from all over the US, but mostly the northern states.
One had just been released from prison for serving time for murder. Another had diabetes and had lost his job as a chef; he died on the street-very sad.
One was found dead in an alley behind our building with a needle still in his arm. Huge rats were all in that alley.
Every day there was feces on the sidewalks as I walked from the parking lot to my office. I had to be careful where I stepped. It was traumatic to go to work.
A few of them were mumbling to themselves and were talking to invisible ghosts.
Another homeless man threatened to kill us all when I was standing in line to mail a letter at the post office. After that day, the post office was permanently closed.
While walking to a meeting in another meeting, my supervisor and I were harassed by a deranged man.
When I had to go to another meeting, a teen-aged girl was being harassed by a homeless man while she stood at a bus stop outside our building. I ran over and stood between her and the deranged man who kept trying to grab her. I kept him from touching her. I told him to move along and leave her alone. He finally left. I stood with her until her bus came so she could go to school. I gave her my business card and told her to call me if she needed someone to stand with her until her bus came to let me know.
One of my prior projects many years ago was to find work for the homeless in the recycling field. I partnered with non-profits to give them jobs. One of the non-profits told me that only 3% are employable and 97% have substance abuse issues or severe mental health problems. I was glad I could help those who could work and wanted to work. They were grateful for their job.
During the pandemic, the homeless were given hotel rooms if they did not do drugs. City employees were stationed at the hotels twice a week, to monitor the situation instead of doing their regular line of work. There were a few female City employees who were assaulted. Shortly after, this program was disbanded.
Since the new Mayor came in, Mayor Bass, the City of Los Angeles is looking to put small mini houses on City property to house the homeless. The problem is that affluent areas do not want the homeless in their neighborhoods, so there is pushback. NIMBY (not in my backyard) attitude.
Asylums had their function in the past. We may very well need them again. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

They built a Highrise condo building for the homeless on Treasure Island overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge, Bay Bridge and the Skyline of San Francisco.
Yes, it used to be a Navy facility. My son spent time training there. Treasure Island connects 2 ends of the Bay Bridge. It's a beautiful location with a gorgeous view of the city, Golden Gate, Alcatraz, etc. I hope they used the barracks and other housing there, but I wouldn't be surprised if they tore them down and gave lucrative contracts to friends as usual. Then they can get their kickbacks. It works well for them. Of course, that's not the case for the taxpayers.
I've lived in Waco, Texas for 35 years. In the last 3 years we have had a HUGE uptick in a visible homeless population who stand on nearly every street corner and beg for money. If you try to offer them work, they will cuss you out. They are living under our bridges and trashing our city. We are sick of it!!!
All the money went to the Homeless Industrial Complex, and the French Laudry restaurant.
Until these people can prove that they're spending these billions of dollars wherever they're spending it at I don't believe a word they say and they're putting us in that lying to us😊
