Hey guys! I see you’re getting a lot of comments on the living arrangements, so
I won’t add to that. I’m lying... yes I will! Listen, you will absolutely hate living like a giant in a space you can’t stand up in! Showering on your knees doesn’t sound like an upgrade. Use half of the upstairs for a bedroom and personal storage, and the area below that for your living room/kitchen/bathroom. Same square footage, much more enjoyable. Then you can use the other half of the mezzanine for bulk storage, and the rest of the downstairs as a workshop. Just have plastic rolled up at each level to drop down when working to keep dust out of your living space (or do some cheap plywood walls you can remove later). Good luck!
Oh, and there’s a body on your roof...

I would build a one story shop with doors alongside your structure for the workshop. You already have one wall and help and experience already. The dust will kill you if you don’t separate the shop from the living area. Really it wouldn’t take that much to do it right now. Then your rebuild can take as long as it takes in the bus.

Hey.. why not... just a thought.. why dont u just gut out the entire bus and use that as your work space for sawing and what not? And turn the work space into tiny home and storage? That way you dont gave to worry about saw dust?

    Hi,
I see you suck on the end of the hose to get the water to flow when you are getting water from the drum/container onto the plants, etc. An easier way of doing it and not having to suck on the pipe is if you submerge the whole pipe in the water until only the end that you are holding is above the water, then close up the outflow end of the pipe with your thumb, and while holding it closed, move the end that you are holding, to the point below the tank that you have designated the water to flow to. When the end is on the correct spot, let go with your thumb/finger and gravity will let the water flow out of the tank.

Good luck guys! Your planting strategy is interesting. Tomato, egg plants, watermelon and pineapple love warm conditions( green house) but your kale, Brussels, romaine, cabbage etc love the opposite conditions ( cool and wet). I'd turn up a row of dirt outside your greenhouse for all those cool loving crops and free up space in the greenhouse for the warm stuff and starting seeds before transplanting outside.

I had my office in my woodworking shop and the dust covered everything. I did sanding outside the shop and only cut boards inside and it was still unbearable for me. You are going to think that you are not creating that much dust, but you are, and you are going to be constantly breathing it in. I ended up moving my office to a different structure on my property and now the other area is strictly my woodworking shop. If it is something you have to do then try to make some sort of barrier between the workshop and your living space. I love watching your videos and it is so amazing the progress that you guys are making! Good luck!

I love Lola too (how could one not???), but your family feels more complete now. The fact that you are animal lovers makes me enjoy your stuff that much more. Loving watching your progress... Just an fyi on the chickens. It *looked* like you closed up their pen after letting them out in the morning? If so, thats a no no as that is where they should want to go to lay their eggs and should know it's always open for them. They will probably make a lot of noise when they do lay an egg as they are sooooooooo proud or something, so if you hear that out in the brush, go check for eggs as you sort of want to curb that free for all laying so you can be sure the egges are fresh. Once the *lay area* is established, the leaving them out all day is wonderful as they will run home, drop that egg, and off to lala play land. They are wonderful. Just lost my last one at 15 years of age. (or there abouts)

Consider installing ceiling before moving in to help cancel out the sound of rain, specially if you're considering the mezannine as the sleeping quarters. You may not be able to sleep with all the rain and only the roof separting you from it.

Some of the plants in the green house may need to be pollinated by hand because the bees will not go into the green house to do that job, so you may need to find out which plants you have that need to be pollinated, there are some that do not need to be, because the plants take care of that themselves.

If I might suggest...separate the floor space in 2 areas with a wall that could be removed later. The kitchen - Living rm area in the front and since you plan to have a garage door on the back side, let that be the workshop area open to air, so dust etc could be more easily going out. On the demising wall put a big fixed window like done with plexiglass (cheap) so you do not loose light and visual contact with exterior. ...Build a terrace extension at back and weather permitting do must of sanding, cutting et outside...

What a great idea. What about a 3/4 temporary wall to keep a lot of dust out and also safety. Maybe a cloth to roll down from ceiling to help with dust and also keep bugs out. I don't know if you get the bugs that you're familiar with in the north east ( I'm in NH). so awesome what you both are doing and have achieved.

Okay, so here's my idea...use the loft for sleeping/clothes storage, downstairs, under the loft for bathroom, kitchen, lounge, and the rest for workshop/tool storage. If you want to continue to travel at some point, redesign your camper to accomodate living without all that space you use for storage since you can keep all that stuff in the workshop when you travel. The camper could be sweet! Oh, and install plastic curtain barrier from the ceiling to the floor in the workshop to keep your living space clean.

You all should make the whole entire work space your first tiny house and then take everything out of your bus and then use the bus to store all of your stuff & then in a year after you are ready to start on your actual tiny home, then you can rent out the first make shift tiny home and make some extra money or just keep it for your guest when you have people come and visit from out of town. Pick a little corner for the work space to make stuff and keep all your supplies inside a cleared out empty bus. You could use the top loft for your bed room loft and then the bottom take one wall & make it your kitchen and another tiny spot for your bathroom and then a family room living area open to the kitchen. So only build one enclosed room which would be your bathroom. That would make a really cool tiny house. Just a tip...

    1. Make the first floor of the Workshop- your home.

    3. Use the van for storage! Gut the van: [i] Remove the wall facing the porch and [ii] replace the wall with an overhead door (ROLL-UP DOOR www.rollupdoorsdirect.com), [iii] add porch roof in front of van for outdoor storage + work area.

Hello to both of you, I am new to The Nomadic Movement and from the first episode I run in to I was hooked. It was nostalgia, I am not sure you are interested in my little story, but here it is. When I was young female, I travel with my backpack around Europe and visited all the countries except Russia, at that time nobody could freely travel there. I worked for few months in each country, saved money and visited the most beautiful places you could imagine, most of them were chosen from local residents recommendations. After that I moved to the next country and so forth. I lived the vagabond life for a quite long time, then came to Canada and decided to stay longer, way longer than anticipated. I got married and raised two awesome boys. On this side of the globe I travelled to number of different countries and have fallen in love with Caribbean site of Costa Rica, by the border with Panama. If I was younger I would totally do what you are doing. I found in both of you kindred harts..... now, I am anticipating your posts with eagerness. Lots of love and hugs - Dana.

For upstairs and In the practical almost no-cost sense, you can create two different flexible walls. One with mosquito nets for fresh air and ventilation. The second full plastic/tarp type to be put on to minimize the dust when working in the shop. It will not be dustproof but may reduce 70% of the sawdust. Both can have magnets for easy on/off installation given it is a metal structure. Maybe some rechargeable battery fans for air circulation.
In the long term and not as cheap, consider installing a shower and sink downstairs with a small battery-operated pump for your water. Built a deep french drain and/or septic tank. Initially, you may consider one of those blue water tanks they use during construction in the U.S. in lew of the septic tank.
Maybe a small solar system to sustain a 12V RV refrigerator. Technology allows these to be very efficient and low energy requirements. Maybe expensive but now they come up to 10 CuFt "as far as I know". Probably you can store food for more than 3 weeks at a time. Maybe add two pieces of metal to the building to tie a tarp for outdoor shade/cooking/etc. A camp Chef 3-burner outdoor stove that comes with a griddle. A portable 5 or 7 lbs propane tank may last several months. A concrete pad or wood deck for the outside cooking area under the tarp shade will be great.

Hi Guys I have folled you for the last 6 mths and watched nearly all your previous vlogs. There are only 4 Vanlife youtube channels that I follow from the states (Panama) because a lot of the others are just faking it for the sake of videos and I don't feel they are genuine. You are an adventurous couple and I like the ups and down that you share with all of us so to me it appears genuine. Love wht your trying to achieve on your land and Look forward to seeing it all up and running. Thank you for the happy entertainment, from Paddy here in Dublin Ireland...:)

hey guys I've Came Upon Your Channel. It's great to see what you guys are doing, just wanted to give you some friendly gave you a little woodworking tip to help you. I see you guys are using what is called a speed square a real good trick is when you're using a speed square to make your Cuts Square to the wood hold your speed square next to the circular saw while you're cutting your piece of wood that way every cut will be square and you can cut faster cuz you don't have to look just hold the fence of the circular saw next to the and when you pick up the wood again still always be square give it a try you'll get the hang of it I think you'll love it. it also saves your saw blades from binding while you're cuting and when you're using a generator it'll save gas because you saw will draw less amperage. keep up the good work.

Phenolic resin wood sealant? The formaldehyde from that and the plywood might end up giving you some medical issues in the future, along with whatever comes from the tools & sawdust. And with plywood sawdust, there will also be glue dust.

Have you guys thought about making the bus your semi-permanent workshop?
You could put a pitched roof on the deck and have that view all day!

THe rain noise from the tin roof will kill you. I've tried it. You need to insulate. I did it with 5 cm hard rockwool and plasterboards. Drastically reduced the noise.
And I think it is a good decision. However, maybe make a small shed for the tools and smelly and dusty stuff. You don't want to live in that. Or use the bus as a shed.
Oh, and you can make a separation between the living area and the workshop. Perhaps a plastic curtain.

How's Jord's rash? I know your chickens are free range but the tiny area you keep them in at night doesn't look like it gives them much protection from all the heavy rain and wind, are you going to make something bigger and something to keep them out of the harsh weather?

Try plain, white lyme dust for bugs...I put mine in a loosely woven fabric 'bag' and dust on top and underneath. The lyme dust eats through the exterior protective coats of the bugs and kills them...as long as you wash veggies before eating, lyme is not harmful to humans. However, if you get some on legs, arms, etc., please wash off. Do not apply in wind...and after a rain if veggies are outside, reapply. Good luck.

Build a lean-to Shed off the front of the bus rip apart the bus and turn it in to the tool room . then put a water catchment system on the new house shop . to start filling your rain water.
That way you can unload all supplies at the top of the hill.

@@tjmac6339 as a tool shed its fine. But not a workshop. Try to maneuver an 4x8 sheet of plywood on a table saw in there. Tell me how that works for you.

And you two please remember how much condensation will be on the inside of the metal during high humidity.. make sure you do all the right things to keep fwater forming on the inside, dipping heavily from the ceiling.. and water running down the walls... 😊👍😊 I had a friend who built a pole barn type building to live in in Indiana and constantly had issues with major condensation on windows, walls, and ceiling… It all but ran them out of their new pole barn home...VERY, VERY IMPORTANT KIDs...!!!

But I just want to live my life, go have some fun. It is my birthday today. *hugs* It looks beautiful there. Please Be Safe.

You should build a little shelter for the generator, 3 side and a roof so the sound goes away from you. insulate it with roxul acoustic insulation. As a sound shield, it'll help with daily sanity.

As you know I have been following you from your very first youtube video! I said in an earlier video that the mezzanine should have actually been another floor in which you could stand up in. It appears that you can only crawl on your hands & knees! There's no way you can build a shower!. My suggestion would be for you to raise the roof, I know it will not be easy but I think it can be done. At least that way you can stand up & walk around & you can build a proper shower. Then you can move to the second level & be comfortable living there. The bottom level you can have as your storage & workshop. As far as the sawdust problem you could have a vacuum/dust collection system for each of the tools. You might have to buy tools that have the feature of being able to use that type of system. Concerning the bus, you could have your helpers move into it so that they don't have to travel to & from your property every day! Something else I've never understood is why you put the water containers down the hillside & then have to pump it up the hill. It rains the same if they were up closer to the bus & then you wouldn't have to pump it up the hillside. Maybe I'm missing something. Please tell me if I am. I guess it's too late to change the water system now. Whatever you decide you should consider all your options & do what you think is right for you. I'm only telling you what I would do! Of course, hindsight is 20/20 & I realize that. You are hard workers & I give you a lot of credit for that! I love you guys, love your videos & only wish the best for you. May God bless you in all you do! Sincerely, Roger

The situation here in Canada is much the same, with the virus scare going on. Many of my friends and I are stock car racing fans. I go to a minimum of 2 dirt track races each weekend. This year, which is my 40th weekly year attending. I have not been able to go to any racing. I am retired exactly 5 years from a massive stroke at age 56. So this is what we do. Besides this, I go to the beach and relax daily with my dog. This has been the most boring summer. I had a small motor home and travelled around for 2 years. But unfortunately, the government disability makes it hard to survive. I sold off that vehicle and my old show car and do what I can these days. I enjoy watching your progress . Have fun and be safe..

When using a skill saw set your blade a little deeper than the thickness of material to avoid kickback.
