  • Brian Keith played a family man on TV. He was the iconic Uncle Bill Davis on Family Affair, the perpetual bachelor millionaire who took on the role of caretaker of his brothers children after his tragic death in an auto accident. At first, he wasn't the most eager volunteer for the undertaking. The culture shock of suddenly having children and the complete ignorance of what it takes to rear children left him floundering at first but quickly he finds his way and grows quite fond of the children.

He and my paternal grandfather grew up together and were very close, stayed in touch throughout their lives. I remember how important his letter to my grandmother was when my grandfather passed away.

To me, his most memorable roll was when he co-starred with Doris Day in With Six You Get Egg Roll - I believe that it was a 1968 feature film.

I love him in this role of uncle bill recently been watching some reruns and boy have family values deteriorated over the years. How far we have come from those days. Hokey as those shows might have been it taught good values unlike the garbage on TV today for kids today to role model.

Thanks for the great video. I was named after Brian Keith!! Long story short my mom's side wanted me named with a J like Joseph etc like my big brothers. My mom went into post parden and so I was named Peanuts for 3 days. Until a woman at the hospital talked my mom into naming me after him. Since they had a crush on him. Thank God cause otherwise I would of been made fun of my whole life..!!

I remember as a kid ( around 1973 )meeting Brian Keith's son Bobby at Honolulu Airport whilst travelling to LA with my parents..We mucked around playing at the Airport then again on the 747 while in flight...I can vividly remember Bobby asking me to go upstairs to the Cockpit Lounge..He asked a stewardess to unlock the chain that stopped entry upstairs..When that happened he ran upstairs to which i followed him ..As i entered the Cockpit Lounge with Bobby there sitting was Telly Savalas(Kojak),Bobbys dad Brian Keith & Peter Falk (Columbo).there was smoke everywhere as Telly had a cigar ..Brian was so cool and asked if i wanted to see the cockpit so i jumped at the chance and the stewardess let me in there...As a 8-9 yr old kid this has always been a fond memory of Brian Keith

In an era when performances could still be very stilted, and overly-stoic, or overly-dramatic, for male leads, he was one of the most naturalistic actors. With his performances, nothing felt like a written line, or overly rehearsed, he just kind of thoughtfully purred the lines as if they were happening in real time. I truly think he was ahead of his time, especially for television! Just a great actor.

I did not know that "taking his own life". My favorites The Parent Trap, and Family Affair. Sorry he felt he had to do that. He was a great actor, better than alot of the ones we have now. And the TV shows were better. The ones we have now YUK?

I watch Family affair as a kid in the 60s. TV in general was family oriented. As an aside, around the time the show was on the air, I was in the original Omaha airport...I was about 8 or 9, and who comes walking up? Johnny Whitaker and his parents.
