In my opinion square toe shoes are hideous only if they´re not square enough (flat enough). There´s like an uncanny valley, both round and VERY flat squared are stylish, but the narrower flat square toe is what everyone hates, specially with that multiple piece stitch used in cheap rubber sole shoes. What happens is that a narrow square toe shoe is very inexpensive to manufacture and requires less material to achieve a comfortable length because it´s not as narrow, therefore it´s rare to find a quality shoe in this design. The wider flat toe shoes are more fashion oriented and no-longer are produced with budget constraints, so they will have better materials and construction and they will undoubtedly look less cheap, they´re still a statement piece so I'd wear them with understated-minimal garments, otherwise the outfit would look saturated.

I make a distinction between square-toe shoes, (in my view, 'square' implies actual right angles) and shoes with trapezoidal toes, which I often hear referred to as chisel toes. I think the former are hideous, but the latter can be an great alternative to the round toe.

  • @gilbs72
    @gilbs72 6 лет назад +5

The shoes and fashion community coined a term for those "attractive square-toed shoes": CHISEL-TOED. They also taper to a point when viewed from the side. They're considered fine shoes and separate from the wider square-toed shoes (which are really square, viewed from the top and sides).

I hear people who are into quality shoes raving against the ‘square toed shoe’ and how they should be avoided. When I think of a square toe shoe, I think of the extremely boxy look that does certainly look horrendous. However, if we look at the 348 Last by Crocket and Jones, it could be argued it's almost a hybrid of curved and box. They look great to me and are their shoes with this Last are some of their most popular. Such as the Hallam, Edgeware and Westbourne for example. I’d love to own all three. :-D

My take away from this video:
Advantages of square toe: good for those with wide feet, can be practical, and some are actually quite stylish.
Advantages of round toe: great for those that struggle discerning left from right and for those that ride horses.
I'm sorry, but not the best arguments. I know for guys who have smaller than average feet, when I see them in round toe shoes the only word that comes to mind is "dainty" which is certainly not a word a man wants to be described as

i work at an office and it has me do a lot of walking delivering paperwork and i find wearing square toe shoes much more beneficial than round toes; i dont end up having sore toes by the end of the day. Round toes, i would wear on a formal event. I find those who outright discriminate the square toe without even trying it on come off rather pretentious. But like every individual, no feet are the same. So wear what makes you feel comfortable - square or round - because we all have different paths to walk on.

Two disadvantages of a curve toe shoe in today's time:
    1. The extended portion (the narrow toe) interferes with driving. I find driving with a square toe to be a lot easier as I'm able to shift gears much easily. The rounded toe extends the length of the shoe, which frequently gets snagged in the foot well of the car.
    2. Curved toe shoes are a lot easier to get trampled on by others when at crowded places, like on the subway.

I think the question is not about fashion, its about the need. Lot of people have bigger toe, so wide toed shoes provide the needed space for the toe to adjust into properly. For them, wearing curve toed shoes give sore/aching toes, nail infection etc.
People with narrow/slim tow (like the ladies) can wear both types.

Antonio - thanks for the historical background of men's footwear! Very enlightening for someone like me who loves trying to figure out why we do what we do and why we wear what we wear now. I also like to reiterate the fact that for the most part, men tend to like footwear that goes beyond the style and into real substance. I personally like shoes that look good but really work and are durable for the most part. a footwear should be 75% function and 25% fashion.

It is a shape that I find very elegant and it has been around for a long time. When you see pictures of victorian gentlemen, they often wear this type. And the argument about a "defined right and left" also includes this shape, obviously. What are Your thoughts?

So you are saying that you don't like square toed shoes because its history is associated with medieval commoners who couldn't afford shoes made for their left and right feet? This argument makes no sense in the modern day. Their association with something other than affluence is what makes them a great counter-culture statement item, which is probably what their resurgence is about.
I find that square toed shoes work better for wider leg pants like bell-bottoms (70s) and boot cut jeans (90s), which I know are currently not in style, but when they were (and whenever they'll be in style again...).

There is a big difference between a "Square Toe" shoe and a "Chisel Toe" shoe. Why did you categorize the two in the same discussion? Chisel is still considered modern and fashionable and can be interchanged with round toe on just about any occasion. Chisel is arguably even the more formal than round. That said, there is NO place for a square toed shoe.

I have a question, Antonio. I understand that in general, a good quality/high end pair of shoes is supposed to have the bottom of their soles made with leather. However there's the disadvantage, at least in my experience, that they will be really slippery and in general they will not isolate from ground temperature. My question is: Am I wrong to think that, after spending €300+ on a pair of shoes, they are supposed to be perfect and therefore I shouldn't have the need of modifying them with some extra rubber sole?". Thank you in advance, and great video!

This video is old, but I've only watched it now. If you're watching it now as well, let me give you the keys to the lamborghini:
The main question that lies within this issue is: Can you wear squared toe shoes or do they wear you instead?
It takes a certain man to wear squared toe shoes, as it does with certain types of clothes. The two things you got to be conscious about before choosing your shoes is 1. your body type and 2. your presence. That second item usually involves things such as posture, attitude, facial expression and etcetera. It takes a bold attitude, a strong posture and broad shoulders to rock square toe shoes.
You should also prefer more ornamentation in your squared toe shoes in comparison to the round toe ones, as the first begs for it while the latter politely declines it.

Interesting. I own both square and round toe. I have a slim athletic build. I wear fitted suits and I prefer the square toe. Now, when I want to go gangster, as in 40's mob style, not gangsta as in young geezy, and wear a double breasted suit, I wear my round toe. So there ya have it, it's all about the look you're achieving....

I have to agree, some square toe shoes are o.k. ( slightly squared), but my preference is the rounded toe.

Square toe shoes and chisel toe shoes are not the same thing! Designs based on chisel toed lasts are amongst the most popular for high-end shoes.

Square toes *look* just fine by themselves; I happen to like moderately angular styling. But what is best on my feet is a separate issue, and fashion is totally irrelevant.
I go for wide, round toes for several reasons:
    1) My feet DO differ from each other, in several respects.
    2) They're easier to clean & polish.
    3) Square toes are more vunerable to scuffing.
    4) My toes form a round shape, more or less, and it's said that your shoes toes should fit the shape of your foot.
    5) The brands of shoes that I'm most comfortable in, just happen to make round toes: Timberland, Clarks, etc. So I'm taking the hint.
    6) Skinny ankles (see article).
So, enough of anyone's opinions . . . including my own. I'll go with what works, and with what fits.

Once again, you frame things in history and that's part of why your channel stands out. Well-done, Antonio!
I have two pairs of dress shoes with a "tapered" toe (less boxy than the stereotypical square toe). One pair is a handmade pair of burgundy monk straps while the other is a basic tan wingtip from a department store. The rest are curved toe shoes.

I drive a lot and commute on a scooter in the city so square-toe suits as well as round. I don't accidentally scuff the tips. Of course both work for me. 🏍

Also, I think the fact that low quality dress shoes/boots often use squared toe design makes people associate squared toe shoes with "cheap" and lack of class. At least, many surround me simply find squared toe unattractive because it does not look "good quality". With that being said, I personally do think squared toe shoes can look sexy and I have gotten a pair from Prada in dark oxblood, and man it looks GOOD.

If you're worried about the shape of your shoe-toe then life is pretty good. For most of us, we just buy a pair of shoes that fit and cost right. Still worried? Get a Life.

    • @pjjolly

@Kevin H That is a valid and reasonable opinion. If you are of this opinion however perhaps you are not the audience for which this video is intended.
Nothing wrong with being cost-conscious - frugality is a virtue - but everyone spends some of their expendable income on something they don't NEED. That's the definition of "expendable." Some folks like working on hobby cars, some like going out and partying on the weekends, there's craft beer enthusists, coffee snobs, outdoorsmen, gun collectors, even baseball card and comic book collecting. The list of things on which people spend their money goes on and on.
Some people enjoy spending their expendable income on stylish shoes. This video is meant for them. I'm sure that you have things you spend money on that others may not find pleasurable (since people are different). I would not support anyone telling you to "get a life" because you enjoy those things.

When it comes to dressing up I try to avoid the decision between square toed vs curve toed shoes simply because I believe both look terrible on me. I look at dress shoes and can't help but think of clown shoes, and how out of proportion they are. I get away with a pair of leather school shoes with a curved toe because they aren't as pronounced as the toes on dress shoes. No one notices until they recognise them.

Great intro, cracking me up. Square toe slip-ons are practical because they can be slipped off easily, so I lean toward those for work especially since I generally wear synthetic leather and they get pretty hot. But for the more formal occasions, curved-toe lace ups are the only option.

Real Men Real Style I'd that it is the case. At least here in São Paulo you can easily find people using those. Even my father has a pair of those totally squared shoes you showed in the video.
It kills me to see my old man using them but most people don't think the same. Well, of course the best would be doing a most deep research in the matter but I'll try to add a photo of one of the most popular models nowadays.

Square toe had a trend going on in the 90s and early 2000s it seems now though the school thought has gone toward a status thing with square toe in particular big square box toe is seen as tacky and cheap and rounder toe is classier.
Hush Puppies and i think Kickers were the champions of such monstrosities, one style in particular looked like a box with some laces thrown on top, was the staple school shoe for many edgy kid back in the day haha

I think there should be a public effort to ditch dress shoes of any kind. Not only are they painful after a long day of work/partying but they mess up your toes so bad. Why suffer through toe injury just to look ugly in both pointed and boxed shoes?
