I almost forgot to breathe watching you transform blocks of black into that beautiful marsh painting. Really inspiring for someone just starting out. Thank-you for your very inviting style of teaching and the really useful lessons.
I find this extremely beneficial...that much-needed "click" to start getting those grasses looking more natural. I absolutely love that you share such important information that benefits artists from beginners and beyond. Thank you so much, Karen!
Thank you for this! I'm amazed you can make such a nice little work of art in about five minutes, and it gives strugglers like me something to strive for.
Thank you so much for this wonderful video! I am more grateful to you than I could ever show, for helping those of us struggling to learn. What a brilliant teacher you are, as well as a brilliant artist! The new HD camera works great for showing detail! Again, thank you, thank you, thank you.
Yes, an amazingly proficient five-minute painting! The rest of us won't be this quick and need not be, but very encouraging. Super advice too. Thank you.
Thank you so much for this clear tutorial. I love seeing you large pieces in the studio, as well as Heidi and Jennifer walking around. I can't wait until I am skilled enough and confident enough to paint so beautifully and independently. Your oil painting is beautiful as well!
Hi Karen, I look forward to your blog every morning and this was a special treat! You are an amazing painter who also has the gift of teaching- lucky us! I will be practicing later. Hope to see you travel towards NJ some day for a workshop!
Helps immensely! At this point, I have thousands (literally) of hard, soft, and extra soft) pastels-I have a very few Terry Ludwigs, as I cannot afford them yet-is there a more economical brand that you would endorse?-I have a good many Mt. Visions, Great Americans, Mugio Handmades, as well as Guiralt, Holbiens..and Rembrandst....and a set of Pan Pastels.....I tend to work from back to front, hard to soft-I notice, and it looks like GREAT FUN, that you work all over the picture at a time...I come from VERY TIGHT, colored pencil background, self-taught. I know I want and need to loosen up, and I realise that the loose rendering allows the viewer's eye to put in the needed detail....Thanks ever so much for these lessons!!!! And Happy New Year!! Kiss the doggie and Kittie!...and I suppose you should kiss your film-maker!(ha ha!)
Very helpful to see how you vary the technique based on the type of pastel. Also learned from seeing how you create the mounds of color under the grasses. I look forward to reading your blog.
Great tips and I like how you tape up the photo and your notan next to your painting. No need to have the camera zoom in and out while you work though. I love your channel and I hope to see so much more of your work because I continue to reference your videos while I work on my art. Thank you.
I love your painting tips!!! Thank you so much Karen! Also love the family vibe. Pets too. Your husband does a great job producing the videos. Thanks again!
Your teaching skills Karen are ideal for me as a Visual and Kinesthetic learner. And your pace and voice tone relax me just enough to experiment during your video. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you Karen! You are such a great painter as well as a great person. I love pastel but have been encountering lots of struggles that make me feel so defeated. Your videos are truly inspiring!
Branching out from oils. I know how I want my landscape to look, but doing it with pastels? This tutorial, showing me techniques, is exactly what I need! I'll admit, I've made some messes. You're right about "practice first". Save the good paper.
Thankyou so much. I have real trouble with grass. I am so impatient! I just want to get into painting and find it hard to practice. I love your paintings and tutorials. Thanks for taking the time to do them.... Lynda from New Zealand.
I loved this demo. i have been teaching myself to paint in pastel and your instruction has been very helpful. I just love your work and appreciate you sharing your talent. Thank you for the help and inspiration.
Your emails and videos are like chocolate ice cream to me: to be set aside for quiet moments when I can really savor them. I am humbled by your willingness to share these amazing tips with us, tips that you've learned through thousands of hours of practice. And I love that you invite your pets into your studio. A QUESTION: when I want to frame a pastel piece, I mount the painting behind glass, like I would a watercolor. The problem is the reflections off the glass are so bad that it's often hard to see the painting. I've used museum glass (which I love), but the price is outrageous. What do you do? Is there a product that can seal the pastel painting well enough to forgo glass altogether?
+jancass51 Thanks for watching! I'm afraid I don't know of an effective way to seal a pastel to avoid the glass without changing the image. I am particular about what I frame because I will only use museum glass.
Thank you for the helpful videos. The large pastel paintings you have in the studio are so lovely. Are they painted on a board? I would love to know more about them. Perhaps you have a blog post specifically addressing these?
Karen I love your style and teaching I have a question , could after I got big shapes of grass in could I use a toothpick to scratch various blades of grass in my pastel s?
Thank you so much for the tutorial. I also use pastel. What I am always confused is why putting on so many layers of color when the previous color is completely covered? I see a lot of pastel painters do that.
Karen Margulis I see.I will try that. Perhaps you could do a video on how to choose the colour for layering, because nobody tells about the theory behind. Thank you very much for replying to me. I love your paintings and videos.
This was very helpful..thank you so much...I like the black board that you have your pastel paper on...would like to know where to get a black board like that...Thank you...Love your Fur Kids...
Such a great work, I wish I had that easiness to paint so beautifully, all my admiration!

Thank you so much for the tutorial. I also use pastel. What I am always confused is why putting on so many layers of color when the previous color is completely covered? I see a lot of pastel painters do that.
Thanks for watching Mimi. My goal is to use a light enough touch so that you can see the colors in the layers!
Karen Margulis I see.I will try that. Perhaps you could do a video on how to choose the colour for layering, because nobody tells about the theory behind. Thank you very much for replying to me. I love your paintings and videos.
