Held The Big East Scoring Record For 25 Years!! LAWRENCE MOTEN! What Stunted His Growth?

  • What happened to Lawrence Moten? In the 90s he was the BEST scorer in the country over his time in college. He had that old school game that was perfect for the college level, but not so much for the NBA. Why not? How did he go from leading the big east in scoring to lasting just 3 seasons in the league? I would say he was a 90s college basketball legend IMO. He had that laid back cool style of play ,he kinda reminded me of an even older player named Johnny Dawkins from the 80s spurs and Sixers.

This was my favorite player. I wore the high socks like him. He was my idol. Like him i wasn't the most explosive athlete. I couldn't jump high, run fast, but I had body control dexterity and smarts. MOTEN just FOUND a way to score. He just maximized all that he could. He was my HERO.

The early to mid 90s.... it was a good time for the college ball. Being from D.C. , the history always intrigued me. I love where I'm from. Just learning how to take the bitter with the sweet, learning about folks experiences. U never know what really goes on behind closed doors. Thank you for this insight. Love peace and respect.

J.C. Stunted Growth big time salute for making my request a reality. 100% agree with your statement. As a east coast guy who’s lil brother was a huge SU fan I remember trying to explain to him why his favorite player was not getting run in the pros. I use to say he needed to be super wet with the J at the next level or he would struggle cause he had like a 1982 type of game in 1997. His game was more suited for a 6’8/6’9 ball player (James Worthy type). Still you have no idea how smooth the brother was unless you watched those games man. It was effortlessly for him. Much love and respect and keep up the great work.

Thank you for making these videos. You're opening a window into a period of basketball where a lot of players were hindered by the structure of the game at the time. I'm guessing a lot of younger fans are having light shed on forgotten players.
It's really wild to think about how many players would have been successful if the game shifted twenty five years earlier.
Thanks for this post and all of the others.

This was a decent piece you did on Sam. Did you know that his real sport was football, dude was Jerry Rice as a receiver and Ronnie Lott as a defensive back, but loved that roundball. One of the reasons he wasn't recruited that heavily was most scouts thought there was no way he wasn't going to play college football. His high school quarterback was Marvin Graves who was the QB at Syracuse while Sam was dropping numbers, but they could never convince him to put the pads on in college or Marvin Harrison would have trying to break his records!!! Keep doing what you are doing!!!

Lawrence Moten reminded me so much of Quincy Douby, except , without the range that Douby had (Quincy Douby another "Stunted Growth" profilee). Both were highly skilled, tall skinny and extremely slow guards, who can get off their shots in college. However, you knew both would struggle to get off those same quality shots in the pros, and more so, be even more of an extreme liability, on the defensive end. Just like Quincy, Lawrence deserves his props, for being one of the sickest guards, to ever come outta the Big East, when it was Eden.
