In today's video, I take you off-road moving fields in my John Deere combine. I get the combine started and then I have a little trouble trying to wrestle it out of 3rd gear and back into 1st gear. Uncle Chris comes to help. I see the neighbor's horses and cows. I start picking up wheat and everything is going well until Uncle Chris' combine breaks down again. We switch combines so I can drive his over to my Dad at the other end of the field (1 mile). Dad has to troubleshoot to try to get this combine running again. He is successful! I see a lot of mice in the field today. I break for dinner with Grandpa and the crew in the field and then right back to work. We drive the combines all the way back to the old schoolhouse so they are out of the field and safe in case there is a fire. I hope you enjoy my video. Thank you for watching!!!

My Story…
Hello. My name is Kate Stephens, and I am a 17-year-old 4th generation Montana farmer. My family has been farming wheat in north-central Montana since my great grandfather immigrated from Denmark in 1912 and homesteaded our land. My family has been teaching me about farming since I was two years old. I run one of the combines on the farm at harvest. I believe that it is important for everyone to know where their food comes from and the families who produce it. I love our farm, and I hope that my Farm to Fashion and Farm to Table products can help educate people about where their food comes from in a fun way. That is how Kate's Ag became a reality. I hope you love my products as much as I do because this is an extension of our farm and the grains we have been growing to feed other families for over one hundred years.

I get hooked on watching because of Kate's commentary skills. Grew up farming wheat but that was long ago and enjoy seeing the newer equipment. Nice they don't have to eat so much dirt and dust these days...;-)

I'm understanding farming is a process of constantly working all the issues that pop up. That's not new to me but farming is so this is fun to see. I think grandpa likes being in your videos. Driving a combine is like flying an airplane with all the many controls and the radio and also the noises are similar. The only difference is that you don't fly so high and don't have to wear a pilot's uniform 🙂 A very interesting video again 👍👍

Sometimes rocking the combine backwards and forwards helps when moving the gear lever I use to find. And pushing and pulling on the lever when it comes to a stop on the movement of rocking

Back when dinosaurs rules the earth, I used to use an Allis Chalmers combine harvester towed by a David Brown 25D tractor, the combine had a petrol/Tractor Vapourising Oil engine on it which had to run close to boiling point when running on TVO. To change from Petrol to TVO back to petrol needed care as the back of your hand was very close to the magneto and the result of touching the magneto was powerful electric shock that made your hand clench and your eyes water.

Kate. How long before harvest do you have to swath the wheat? I would imagine there are some advantages of swathing. Are there? Finally at what moisture do you harvest the wheat? Sorry to be so inquisitive, but I find it interesting and you always look great!!!
Thank you for your question. In Montana we have a bug called Saw Fly that destroys the stems of the wheat and we cannot pick it up with our straight cut headers. If we didn’t swath it first we would lose most of our crop. We would prefer not to swath but we have no choice. I appreciate your kind words.

@@KatesAg .....спасибо . У нас ещё на Алтае не начинали уборку пшеницы , у нас в этом году то жара +35 , то проливные дожди . А музыка очень нравится :-):-):-)
Спасибо. С июня здесь было около 100 градусов по Фаренгейту, и дождя не было. Урожайность составляет около 40 бушелей с акра или меньше. Бушель - 60 фунтов. Очень плохой урожай.
У нас в Краснодарском крае недели две назад закончилась уборка колосовых, по кругу ~60 ц/га или 90бушелей с акра :).
Могло бы быть и больше, но два месяца лил дождь, не могли сеять пропашные, а также обработать пшеницу и ячмень.
В период созревания долбанула жара до 38°. Потом дожди и ветер укатали местами всё в "асфальт". Но в любом случае не плохой урожай зерна 3-4 класса.

You are a very gifted worker around the farm. You can drive truck and run combine. Thanks for education where our food come I'm sure a lot of people have no clue. Kate, you might have to go into the clothing consulting business for some of us farmers so we look a bit more presentable, most of what I wear seems to end up looking more like rags then clothes, rips, grease and oil stains that won't wash out, faded, dye coming out of my tshirts ... pretty much look like an unfortunate soul that crawled out of some back alley. That's the fashion statement I seem great at creating LOL ( I expect your dad and uncle end up looking that way some days as well ! )

This is also a major, major testament to the technology of combines. What used to be a severely back breaking process is now something a young lady can drive with one hand while having a cab quiet enough to do a video.

Hey Kate, I got two questions and something I've always admired. 1: what drone do you use? 2: are you home schooled and if so who teaches you?
I live in Canada in a big city with everything around me at my disposal as a consumer. But one thing I always find so interesting, I go East and it's all farm lands and it's awesome to look at with it being vast and open. When I go West, The mountains are so incredible with nature and trees. All kinds of hike trial's one can do, being 8,000 feet above sea level on top of a mountain when the city I live in is about 3,500 feet. It just feels like a whole other world whether you go East or West.
