This is one of the few bands that had two separate eras that were both phenomenal, original lead singer. David Lee Roth, who had crazy showmanship, and their music was much harder at that time, which was fantastic. Then Sammy Hagar took over for him, who in his own right had a great solo career, and also was the front man for Montrose. He had a much better voice and was a much better musician in general then David Lee Roth and the band just seemed to have much more fun on the stage with Sammy. Two totally different vibes. Both were great. Keep doing your reactions. They are fantastic.
Don't underestimate Dave's musicianship. Those vocals were killer and he had his own style and his melody lines complimented Ed's music and they wrote 5 classic albums. Nothing to sneeze at.
IMO Michael Anthony backing vocals and Eddies guitar made Van Halen. They could have had another front man but without either Michael or Eddie, the sound would not be the Van Halen sound.
@@jamesellis701 People really don't give Sammy enough credit. Sammy was already in a fairly popular band before this, and he had a pretty successful solo career between Montrose and Van Halen. I love that both "eras" and I'm glad we got to see a very successful Van Halen after Roth left, a lot of that has to do with Hagar (look no further than Gary's attempt after Hagar left).

@@jamesellis701 - I'm not so sure when you said "the success of Van Halen in 1984 catapulted them to the top to where it didn't matter who joined they were gonna be a smash success" you were correct. I'm 68 years old, I saw Van Halen many times and a number with each lead singer and Gary Cherone wasn't a smash hit just because he was with Van Halen and their . One concert I went to some people walked out well before Van Halen's set was over and were saying how terrible Gary Cherone was. I'd have left too but my girlfriend at the time wanted to stay. Met Eddie at an airport several years ago, very cool down to earth guy, no celebrity ego, no standoffishness, just sat around and chatted for quite a while like we had known each other for years.
Love to hear stuff like that!! I've met a bunch of famous people, mostly athletes, and while there were a few jerks they were mostly really cool, normal guys. I can't even imagine meeting Eddie though!! That's so amazing!
I saw Eddie in 1979 on their 1st headlining tour. I was only 14, but that changed my guitar playing life. At that time around 78-79, nobody had heard anything like him. Eddie changed the game.
You are totally correct. Anyone could play the exact same guitar notes but King Edward plays everything and it always sounds like only Eddie. I keep telling people that Eddie is, was and will always be the GOAT of the guitar.
The story of this song is that 3am Sammy and his wife were "getting busy" and Edward shows up at their door with this melody to work on. After Sam gets Edward to leave, his wife was asleep. Thus Sam was "incomplete "
This is actually from 1988, the third single from their eighth studio album OU812. The groove and style definitely changed as the late 80s brought some edginess to some rock bands. Even with Sammy Hagar at the vocal center, Eddie, Michael and Alex held it down as they always have.
I loved how you were able to see the difference from the music driven songs by David Lee Roth and realize that this song was more vocal driven than the past. All without realizing the lead singers had changed. DLR was a fantastic frontman and arguably one of the best ever, but Sammy was a more talented vocalist and showed during his era of singing lead for VH.
This song is off OU812, their second album with Sammy Hagar. It's one of my favorite Van Halen songs. A lot of people say it's to country and dont like it.
Eddie van Halen was royalty in the early 80s he married Americas sweetheart Valerie bertinelli from the hit sitcom "one day at a time" it was a wild ride for her. But in the end she couldn't handle the rockstar lifestyle if Eddie. But they stayed close age was by his side on his deathbed. Along with there son Wolfgang Van Halen. Wolfgang by the way is just as good as Eddie was on the guitar ❤ RIP Eddie
From 1974 until 1985, Van Halen consisted of Eddie Van Halen; Eddie's brother, drummer Alex Van Halen; vocalist David Lee Roth; and bassist/vocalist Michael Anthony. In 1985, Roth left the band to embark on a solo career and was replaced by former Montrose lead vocalist Sammy Hagar.
I know I'll get beat up, but I never liked David Lee Roth and couldn't get into Van Halen until this era. This is the first album from V.H. that I ever bought, and this song was the reason. Love this song.
No, you’re allowed your opinion. I’m a huge VH fan and always thought Hagar was the better lead vocalist, definitely a richer voice. Just an opinion, obviously, but that’s what makes us unique, right?
The good old 80s. 🎉💜🎉 It seems like almost every generation has a lot of people who like the 80s compared to other decades. I like the 70s & 90s too but the 80s is where my heart is with music. My brother-in-law got to open for these guys one time. That was before I knew him. He was soo talented. We miss him.
This right here is what I have said for years! There doesn't need to be labels for "black" or "white" music....it's just music man! If it makes people happy and gives them some sort of feeling or message, who cares who made it? The sister likes and can appreciate Van Halen, I have been a fan of VH for over 40 years, and love that she can appreciate what I appreciate in the music. Growing up, one of my favorite bands was 5th Dimension....love their music, their messages, their vibe. I also, like Karen Carpenter, 3 Dog Night, Metallica, Motley Crue, the Beatles, Gladys Knight, Roberta Flack, EW and F.....be diverse! Don't limit yourself! Love and respect Britt!
Its very interesting to see you react to this. I've watched your reactions to Putri Ariani. Now its a 180 degree flip to 1980s rock. Music is so inviting and uniting to all of us. Im a music industry guy from these 1980s. And nowdays im a huge followerer of the great Putri Ariani. However Van Halen has always primarily been gutair driven. Hagar brought some soul to their music after david Lee Roth left. Ironically they are one of the few bands that stayed at the top with two different singers. Its great looking back at the phenomenal era of 80s rock. Great reaction Britt. You have been missing out on some great new Putri content.
They apparently played this song for some of their friends in other bands, who were all excited at this rare opportunity. But they heard this song and were stunned into silence because it was such a departure from their usual stuff. The rest of this album (OU812) is very much what you'd expect from Van Halen. But Eddie was ALWAYS experimenting with his guitar playing. He inspired an entire generation of string-playing long-hairs and is dearly missed.
Great song love it another great reaction by you again hope your doing well and healthy today thank you so much for sharingthis video with us love it Britt.👍
"A lot of guitar players could play that chord, but it just wouldn't sound the same." Fact. ALSO.... Very few guitar player would *come* *up* *with* that lick. Or A LOT of the stuff that this musical genius wrote.
Yes….Sammy Hagar!! VH earlier stuff is with singer David Lee Roth. Sammy brought sophistication. Sammy was a team-player, an superior vocalist and brought together superior songwriting. Roth was about himself.
You said that you can’t put Van Halen music into a specific box, and I say that there would not be a box big enough to hold it. Each individual song on every album provides so much diversity, sound, style, tone, creativity, wit, humor, and in your face guitar licks that leave you wanting more more more, and in the the same instant, asking how how how! Keep the Van Halen reactions coming as I do enjoy them very much. Just keep in mind that you have only scratched the surface, and there is a long way to go from here.
I never missed a Van Halen concert when they were in town. Once tickets went on sale when I had to work - I talked my mom into waiting in line to get my tickets. She complained for days about being the oldest one there 😊
Interesting thing about the guitar solo is that Roy Clark of country Fame, consider one of the better country guitars said that Eddie Van Halen's "Chicken Picking" which is what that solo is like and the style of the song he said the Eddie Van Halen is the best chicken picker he'd ever heard.
They used to say there were two versions . Van Halen with David Lee Roth. Then in 86' , Sammy joined and people called it Van Hagar sarcastically. Those four or five albums Sammy did with Van Halen were all good.
This is the second album featuring Sammy Hagar in lead vocals, affectionately known as Van Hagar. The album was called OU812. This particular song reminds me of ZZ Top. In fact I thought this song was ZZTop when I first heard it.
When this debuted I was like Holy, to quote Chris Farley, Holy Schnikees. That was awesome 👍😎. Then the DJ announced, after the song, who the band was and I did an instant 😮😮. Very different for them. Alex nearly, in terms of discipline, topped his Hot For Teacher intro. That is hard to do at that tempo. Anyone know whether that was Sammy or Eddie on the acoustic guitar? Brilliant idea. What a beautiful departure from the Diamond Dave era. Strong rocker even though there's not much electrical guitar happening.
True Story: The legendary rock band The Scorpions were going to tour with Van Halen as part of 1988 Monsters of Rock Tour. Van Halen invited the members of the Scorpions to the studio to prevue some of Van Halen's soon to be released music for the album OU812 (where this song is from). Sammy sat the Scorpions in the listening booth along with the rest of Van Halen and seriously said (I'm paraphrasing) "We've done the rock thing. We want to try something new. We're excited for you guys to hear our new direction. We decided to make a country western album!" He then played this song (which is country in its tempo and lyrics). The members of the Scorpions were dumbfounded but polite. They didn't know how to process that one of the biggest rock groups in the world with the most famous rock guitarist was going country western. Van Halen let them listen to the song and then asked their opinion. They were polite, but obviously thinking about the reaction of VH fans to this on the tour. After a few minutes, the Van Halen members busted out laughing and said "We're just fucking with you! That's just one song." They then played them other music off the album to reassure the Germans. The Scorpions laughed and said they were completely hoodwinked at first.
I love❤ your instinctive observations on how each individual instrument and lyrics conjoined to make the beautiful sound that we all get to enjoy. I wish you had more past time of the ROOT of what van halen instinctively became.....it was ment to be how it became, and it all came full circle for what it is and was. I love your energy and your selfless openness of what True talent really is....!!! Much love and respect to you and yours ❤
There have been two different front men and they look similar. David Lee Roth was the original. He had the pants you wanted. He was replaced by Sammy Hagar, seen in this video, in the mid 80's. David Lee Roth returned to the group after Hagar left in the n2010's. When DLR returned he had short hair, as seen in the live version of "Unchained". Alex Van Halen is the drummer. Michael Anthony is on bass.
This song was off the first album with Sammy Hagar as lead vocal, replacing David Lee (high kickin') Roth. That's why it sounds so different. Probably my favorite VH song in the Sammy years. Love your reactions!
This song has an interesting backstory......(Told by Sam to VH1) Sam was in bed one night doing the hibidydibidy with his lady when he heard rocks hitting his bedroom window. It was Ed. He wanted to write a song. Sam wanted something with a country twist. They cranked this song out in about 30 minutes on an acoustic so Sam could get back to his lady and she could finish what she started.
I heard one time that there was another guitarist of that era who was really influenced by Eddie Van Halen and trying to get his sound with his amp and guitar. Then he was on tour with Van Halen and played his actual guitar and amp and figured out the sound was really in Eddie's fingertips.
I'm a total guitar nerd. The one Ed is playing is a 1960s Teisco spectrum5. They were worth about $500 before this Video came out. Good luck buying one now.
Darling this was in 1988 (but can understand the 90s references) If I had a band or any talent Hagar would be the frontman. Also love Chickenfoot with Satriani on lead. Love your work and analyses.
this song is about Eddie Van Halen interrupting Sammy Hagar the blonde lead singer when he was with a woman getting busy, Sam walked down to Eddie, Eddie showed him his musical idea, when Sammy went back upstairs to the woman, she fell asleep and didn't finish what she started.
The story goes like this. Eddie and Sammy where neighbors. One late night Eddie had made Valeri mad so he started writing music. He went to Sammy’s house around 2am. Sammy was up with his wife when Eddie showed up. He interrupted Sammy and his wife… well ya know. Sammy can down on the back porch, and he and Eddie wrote a song that morning called Finish What you Started. 😂
This blonde guy (Sammy Hagar) can still sing at the almost age of 80. He started with Montrose in the early 70's. David Lee Roth is the original singer.
Eddie Van Halen-Lead Guitar…Died 2020, Alex Van Halen-Drums, Sammy Hagar-Lead Vocals, Michael Anthony-Bass (Incredible Backing Vocals). Google the story on how this song was written. It will make you laugh.
There are so many incredible songs from Van Halen in the Sammy Hagar era. Please PLEASE!!! try and check out as many of them as you can. Especially the ballads like "love walks in " or "poundcake ". You will never be disappointed by any of them!!!!
I watched an interview on Sammy and he said the reason they wrote this song is Eddie Van Halen came to his house one night at about 1 o’clock throwing pebbles at the window wants Sammy to come to the window and Sammy was in his room with a female, but when Sammy went to the window Eddie Van Halen said I got this song but I can’t get it finished. That’s how I became come on baby finish what you started she went to sleep.😂
Lead singer, blond, but not "that guy" who "Jumped." This is often referred to as the "Van Hagar Era." (Sammy Hagar) replaced David Lee Roth in 1985/86.
This is the second singer Sammy Hagar, not the original singer David Lee Roth. DLR is more attitude and entertainer, where as Sammy is mellower, less ego, and a much better singer. BUT! Both are very amazing, just a different influence on the music. Sammy’s are by far more pop radio friendly.
Eddie's guitar tone...got cleaner and cleaner as he got older, just something interesting I never noticed until Nuno Bettencourt said it during a Rick Beato interview.
Britt, i think the previous reactions you did were all David Lee Roth on vocals. The original lead singer up to 1984. Sammy Hagar was the 2nd lead singer of the band from 1985 to 1996. This video/song came out in 1988.
When they were children Alex played to get tour and Eddie played the drums and then I switched up Sammy on the other hand used to be called the red rocker on his own
You have to react to the live version! You’re hearing the song musically which is awesome and as a guitarist following Ed I can’t complain. But the live version will open your eyes to the lyrics. 🤘🏻
Niiice. An underrated, and my favourite Sammy VH album. Songs are all really different in mood. Brilliant. If I recall correctly, this video was banned... ??
There's one and only Eddie Van Halen......listen the live version of this Song.......enjoy........Next to react, year to day live in Australia.....Eddie was on another planet
I prefer Sammy Hagar .. he brings more richness into the Van Halen sound. I find the music is better & more polished, too. 🤘 Love Eddie’s adorable smile. 😁
The original Van Halen had David Lee Roth as the Vocalist this was later when Dave left and Sammy Hagar came in the band and took over the Vocals! 2 separate styles. I like both. Another good Sammy on Vocal is "Love walks in" here is the link: ruclips.net/video/QPAo0ReyCpE/видео.html
You've actually got to listen to the early original Van Halen which is what made them explode in popularity. Anything off that first self-titled album. Everything on it was fire in this album just blew the rock music scene away. That's really the only way to understand why Van Halen was so important.

Michael Anthony, the man that provided the space for Eddie to do what Eddie did, and also, those harmonies...such an underrated backing vocalist.

I listened to OU812 daily for years in the 80's & 90's. Great CD
Eddie is my favorite since i was 10....song "jump" solo is ridiculous!!
My favorite Van Hager song, although Black and Blue runs a close second.
Saw the band 2 times with Sammy it was a big party so.much fun there will never be a band like this again
You are right, Eddie had a sound of his own. No one before or since can duplicate it.
I loved both Sammy and Dave! Sammy had the better voice, and Dave was the better Showman!
Yep!
this song is about Eddie Van Halen interrupting Sammy Hagar the blonde lead singer when he was with a woman getting busy, Sam walked down to Eddie, Eddie showed him his musical idea, when Sammy went back upstairs to the woman, she fell asleep and didn't finish what she started.
A high energy song from them is from the Live Without a Net video...There's Only One Way to Rock.
I love this band!!!
Britt and Van Halen, the best!
Sammy Hagar is a beast on vocals! My wife calls the time he was with Van Halen the "Van Hagar Era ".
Britt, i think the previous reactions you did were all David Lee Roth on vocals. The original lead singer up to 1984. Sammy Hagar was the 2nd lead singer of the band from 1985 to 1996. This video/song came out in 1988.
When they were children Alex played to get tour and Eddie played the drums and then I switched up Sammy on the other hand used to be called the red rocker on his own
Fantastic reaction 👌👌👌
I love Van Halen . Check out some live versions from live without a net concert ..
Yes, "Best of both worlds", TV version!
This is my favorite Van Hagar song 🤘
For the record, in case you did not know but the lead singer is SAMMY HAGAR, this is not DAVID LEE ROTH, the original singer of Van Halen. 👍🍀
I love this song and album. Hoping you do Black n Blue off the same album. Great stuff.
Total 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Missing ya Ed but we're teaching Brit it all and rockin ya still.
Great song
There's one and only Eddie Van Halen......listen the live version of this Song.......enjoy........Next to react, year to day live in Australia.....Eddie was on another planet
I prefer Sammy Hagar .. he brings more richness into the Van Halen sound. I find the music is better & more polished, too. 🤘 Love Eddie’s adorable smile. 😁
I too prefer Sammy
The original Van Halen had David Lee Roth as the Vocalist this was later when Dave left and Sammy Hagar came in the band and took over the Vocals! 2 separate styles. I like both. Another good Sammy on Vocal is "Love walks in" here is the link: ruclips.net/video/QPAo0ReyCpE/видео.html
You've actually got to listen to the early original Van Halen which is what made them explode in popularity. Anything off that first self-titled album. Everything on it was fire in this album just blew the rock music scene away. That's really the only way to understand why Van Halen was so important.
Love that samba style beat
