Morgan Sheppard is such a classy racer. So glad I got too see him race so many times on TV and in person. He was definitely one of the best at Atlanta. He had a knack for that place. I think 3 of his 5 wins were at Atlanta. Proud to call him a fellow North Carolinian like so many other greats from my home state.
I really really love watching these old Nascar races a whole whole lot and I still watch Nascar greatest races I have been a big Nascar fan for a long long time and I want to a Nascar race long long time ago and I had fun at the races
it is hard to believe that Morgan Sheppard is still driving in nascar he is just not in the cup series he is racing in the xfinity series which for his age is still pretty cool to see.
I couldn't be happier for Morgan. The way he got choked up in victory lane, the way his wife bragged on him and kissed him, that he did it without a sponsor, and with a new crew...that man was king for a day. Oh, and don't forget the magic of Jake Elder!
Lampley and Posey were so bad. They didn't even realize that Elliott and Bodine nearly wrecked at 2:55:13 when they were on board with Bodine. Half the time they just rambled.
I’ve always found Lampley kind of pretentious when he does play by play. The biggest thing I see is why have Tim Brant and Al Trautwig in the pits? I’ve always been a fan of Brant, but he was a football player. ABC could’ve spent the money to get a racing guy in there.
They suck, but I'd still rather listen to these guys than the squeakers that call modern races. At least these two sound the part for confused announcers. Still not as painful as that time it was ken squire Neil bonnet and that random female reporter. Imagine watching a race with a 80s mom in the booth. You could feel how uncomfortable it was.
This was the first ever "Atlanta 500" to be televised by ABC flag to flag, something that would happen, with the exception of 1993, up until 2000. (Before then, the race would be televised either same day tape delay or the tape delay the next week, depending on ABC's Wide World of Sports' schedule that weekend.)
It was great to have the race flag to flag, but Lampley & Posey were almost unbearable to listen to 😖 Pit road guys were pretty good, except for sticking that mic in Harry Hyde's face during his argument with the Nascar official, damn lucky he didn't get punched on live TV! 😂
Great opening. A reminder of what USED TO BE. Racing drawing more fannies in seats than any other sport. The France family killed that. Bigtime. He traded real men like those shown here for Kyle Busch driving for all american toyota as he blows teenagers off track every friday saturday and sunday
Such a great race! Ol' Shep beating the best the sport had to offer at the time, while they (Earnhardt, Texas Terry , Richmond, Bodine ect..) were in they're prime! While he wasn't "My guy", I always rooted for Morgan, he was a very good driver & he was tough as nails (still is!) and No one could make him flinch, not even Dale Sr! It's a damn shame such a great race was made nearly unwatchable by the cringe worthy Lampley & Posey 🤮
I've worked for Morgan. He's sold just about everything he owns to keep going. He'd run the whole races if he had money for tires. The cars are good and fast. He's not gonna give up till everything is gone
I seen him in a Iracing dirt lobby when I was watching a Livestream. The streamer had no clue who he was and I was awestruck to see that name after all these years. If I'm ever in a lobby with him, I will go out of my way to thank him for his contributions to motorsports. Thinking about him still out there, it's enough to get sand in a fellas eye.
As an Earnhardt fan, I was trying to will the Wrangler Chevrolet around the Buick. Still a Dale fan but this time I was happy for Morgan. He and his wife are the nicest people you will ever meet.
Never ceases to amuse me how Posey can insult viewers intelligence while simultaneously being to stupid to realize he’s doing it. In fact, he still does it to this day. Also, Lampley saying Benny is Phil Parsons’ dad is one of the funnier s things I’ve heard in a while. Such a clown 😂😂
I always liked the transmissions with the fallout gears so the only thing on the shaft would be 4th and all the other gears would break and fall into the pan lol
Jim Lampley the legendary boxing commentator for HBO doing NASCAR is just weird but entirely normal at the time since he was working for ABC and they had him do commentary for a variety of sports including NASCAR in addition to boxing.
Back in 1986 they used the strict definition of the word "superspeedway", which was an oval 1 mile in length or greater. Hence at 5:30 they mention Bill Elliott's 11 "superspeedway" victories in 1985. The meaning of the term gradually changed in the late '90s, 2000s to more identify with tracks like Talladega and Daytona.
I didn't realize how spoiled I was, watching races in the Jenkins/Jarrett/Parsons and Joy/Baker/Bonnett tv era. Posey is intolerable and Jim belongs ringside at a boxing match and nowhere else.
0:01 can't have that anymore, we dont want to "hurt" those snowflakes who get offended by everything!! Words of Advice, GET OVER IT!!!! and don't like it, Tough Shit!!
So NASCAR tweaked the rules to give the Chevys the advantage again? Why am I not surprised? After watching NASCAR for about 50 years, I have never seen NASCAR tweak the rules in favor of the Fords, but I can’t count on both hands a feet how many times they tweak the rules for Chevy/GM, there just isn’t enough fingers and toes.
Sad to say NASCAR is no longer the grit of sports if they would've left the drivers be and let them race like they do here and just made it safer if and when you're in a collision but nope they had to go all sissyboy on us
Personally from a guy that regularly watched NASCAR races from the 70's - 2001, and then watched less and less until I quit watching altogether. I think there's been multiple issues that has caused NASCAR to spiral downhill and go from a successful blue collar sport to a failed white collar sport. This is my point of view, and people I have talked to views, and not in any particular order: (1) Too many regulations and rules that wasn't only about safety. (2) Too many new "talented" drivers that didn't work their way up from a garage or job, which led to spoiled brats that bought their way in with their daddy's money, even if they had NO talent. (3) Too much PC crap, and we all know what that consist of. (4) Too many owners with multiple teams instead of one team that was fighting to win against everyone else on the track. (5) Cookie cutter cars that's hard to tell the difference on the track and paint schemes and sponsors that change and is unrecognizable from week to week, so it's hard to follow your favorite driver. (6) The camera shots that change so fast you can't even keep up or really see what's going on, I mean who needs to see so many bumper shots of the track unless it's going to show the cause of a crash? C'mon Man, sorry had to say it. lol (7) Then there's the economy, we have to remember a lot of working class people had jobs during the hay day of NASCAR, then as we all know the jobs went to China, and we had some really bad people running our government that didn't help that, and of coarse the cost of going to a race or watching it on T.V. became harder and harder to reach for the blue collar working people that were out of a job or having to work multiple jobs to make ends meet. (8) Most kids today don't even care about cars or the racing sport, mainly because of the climate hoax, When I was a kid it was exciting to get a drivers license and work for your first car, now a lot of them don't even drive, they call an Uber, or want a EV self driving car that daddy will buy for them. (9) NASCAR took away too many tracks that was the foundation of the sport for the sake of bigger tracks and the money they could make. (10) NASCAR is completely out of touch with reality of what's going on. I have a lot more to list but that's enough to see there's a BIG issue for fans and the future of NASCAR.
Hey he could not drive when he tried at Indy but this guy can’t ride a bicycle he needs to keep his mouth shut about set up of cars and about what he sees from the I car camera. Hey they can’t even get the names right when interviewing for TV views. Hey he needs to SAM possum home.
Morgan Sheppard is such a classy racer. So glad I got too see him race so many times on TV and in person. He was definitely one of the best at Atlanta. He had a knack for that place. back when the sport was not anti southern or stupid jody
it is hard to believe that Morgan Sheppard is still driving in nascar he is just not in the cup series he is racing in the xfinity series which for his age is still pretty cool to see.
Would be really cool to see some punctuation too.
I couldn't be happier for Morgan. The way he got choked up in victory lane, the way his wife bragged on him and kissed him, that he did it without a sponsor, and with a new crew...that man was king for a day. Oh, and don't forget the magic of Jake Elder!
100 percent agreed. It was inspirational to see. I'm going to be riding that good feeling all day.
I met Morgan a number of times, super nice guy.
Lampley and Posey were so bad. They didn't even realize that Elliott and Bodine nearly wrecked at 2:55:13 when they were on board with Bodine. Half the time they just rambled.

Yeah, and they didn't even realize Morgan took four at the end.
Very Good Race!! 2021 and Morgan and his Wife are still with us!. ✌️❤️🥓
love the interview with Morgan's wife. Dude keeps digging for sentimentality and keeps getting, "no we need money, dummy."
I hate hearing commentators describe stock car racing who have no idea about stock car racing.
These 2 was the best in the business for just that!!🤣🤣 #comedyclub

A great day in Nascar history. Beat the greatest driver in his prime.

(Before then, the race would be televised either same day tape delay or the tape delay the next week, depending on ABC's Wide World of Sports' schedule that weekend.)
I remember that. Was there. Starting in 1985. Wish Atlanta was still the old layout track. Half mile turns & quarter mile straightaways.
1991 was not televised flag to flag either.
@@danielbullock4703 only because of rain. It was planned to run flag to flag
It was great to have the race flag to flag, but Lampley & Posey were almost unbearable to listen to 😖 Pit road guys were pretty good, except for sticking that mic in Harry Hyde's face during his argument with the Nascar official, damn lucky he didn't get punched on live TV! 😂
Gee the announcers are hard to take, but a good race for the unsponsored M. Shepard and Jake Elder.
Great opening. A reminder of what USED TO BE. Racing drawing more fannies in seats than any other sport. The France family killed that. Bigtime. He traded real men like those shown here for Kyle Busch driving for all american toyota as he blows teenagers off track every friday saturday and sunday
Loving the clueless commentary team 😅
If you make Atlanta pre 1994 layout for a decade it would be the best.

Morgan Sheppard was 44 years old THEN. OMG he's still going (sorta).
I've worked for Morgan. He's sold just about everything he owns to keep going. He'd run the whole races if he had money for tires. The cars are good and fast. He's not gonna give up till everything is gone
Ol' Shep has the heart of a Lion, always thought Lion Heart should have been his nic-name! I believe that nic-name was already taken tho 💪
This abc crew was just awful.
As an Earnhardt fan, I was trying to will the Wrangler Chevrolet around the Buick. Still a Dale fan but this time I was happy for Morgan. He and his wife are the nicest people you will ever meet.
Earnhardt was a piece of garbage .....always knocking people out of the race he was dirty driver
Honestly it was so cool when they preent all the drivers with them cars to the beginning race
My god Morgan Sheppard was 44 years old THEN. 76 years old and still (sort of) going...
front was the back . and this trace was an amazing race.
2:18:10 did Bodine flip off the 75 car?
Indeed he did lol
And I'll keep rooting for him. Always have. Always will.
That track is hard on tires.
Look at the top ten. All Legends.
Top 10? Hell top 12. Buddy Baker 14th.

Pretty sure this was the race where Earnhardt punched him in the nose
What a race. Nothing flukey about this one at all.
Old school cheating.A fan and alternator that didn’t work. The driver says “Hey,it’s not cheating. It’s equipment failure.”
I always liked the transmissions with the fallout gears so the only thing on the shaft would be 4th and all the other gears would break and fall into the pan lol

Atlanta is a superspeedway?

Dale Earnhardt wasn't quite the legend he'd become. But 1986 started a period of 6 championships over 9 seasons for the #3 car.
"Wreck some body is not what I do", Lol.
38:52 theres some unfortunate foreshadowing...😢
I didn't realize how spoiled I was, watching races in the Jenkins/Jarrett/Parsons and Joy/Baker/Bonnett tv era.
Posey is intolerable and Jim belongs ringside at a boxing match and nowhere else.

sam who is that guy

I wouldn't be proud of flying a loser's flag...
This will be considered blasphemy, but this car was my favorite Dale Earnhardt car.
Imagine they made old Atlanta...pre 1995
Very strange commentary. A lot of talk about how handsome or rugged some of the drivers are.
Which is more than we can say about the broadcast team
Dale has wrecked all my cars.
I did old Atlanta on iracing and they can do that in 1 season
Junior Johnson sounds like Eric Cartman after consuming tubes of "Vagisil".
they all fought Dale
