Just watched. I'm a 58 year old empty nester. Quit my job earlier this year to care for my mom, but she is now in a nursing facility. I've spent the past 5 1/2 months fairly non-stop decluttering my home. Lots of trash, lots of donations & lots still left. Since I have decluttered & made it easier for my husband, he has started keeping things more tidy. My house is decorated very simply, but beautiful this year. Thank you Cas. I could not have done it without you. You Rock!

In my 20's through my 40's, I felt my house needed to be as perfect as it could be, and I needed to be "super mom." During that time, I was also working a very stressful, demanding job as an RN in ICU.
I wore myself out, literally. I ended up sick with fibro and chronic fatigue and an autoimmune disease. Please don't worry about the small things. Looking back, I realized that the majority of things I worried about and worked toward in my home was not worth it. Focus on slowing down and just being in the moment with your kids. They grow up so fast. Your family needs you healthy and happy and making memories with them, not the house being perfect.

I remember guiding my son to the rank of Eagle in scouting. We had a list merit badges on the frig and other steps to climb that mountain. My mantra for him was, "How bad do you want it?". That was 20 years ago! I have nearly 40 years of stuff from my mother, my mother-in-law, and now my husband; all of these people have died. I need to take it one step at a time and ask, "How bad do I want a clean house?". I took a pile of assorted men's combs, a pack of shower gel bottles all to the local soup kitchen. They were as thrilled to get these things as I was to get rid of them. Remember, your house didn't get this way overnight and you can't expect to clean it overnight. Also, an hour of work on a mess, is an hour of work on a mess. If you could spend just one hour decluttering each day, that's 9 work weeks on your house! Good luck in the new year everyone.

I started with "only going to clean ONE shelf " in my dish cupboard. 😮
I was SO ENERGIZED when I finished that ONE SHELF, that I kept going to the next shelf and the NEXT shelf after that.
When i finished, I was tired, but OH SO HAPPY !!! That whole cupboard looked SO BEAUTIFUL 😍 and it STILL (6 MONTHS later) DOES !!
I kept opening it up every day just to look at how pretty and uncluttered it was.
I've kept it that way, going forward, too. Which helped me to move on around my kitchen, top, and bottom cupboards until every one of them are now easier to get things out and put things away. 😊
I moved on to my bathroom cabinets and got all 3 sections and 2 drawers finished. I wish I'd had known this way of taking care of things.
I sent my sister vids of Cas, Dawn and Dana.
My sister is now doing the same thing in her house.
Thank you ladies for sharing your struggles with us and setting us up for success 😊

Hurray, two of my fav. on this podcast. I was raised by parents who lived through the Great Depression, and my mom kept EVERYTHING! My dad also farmed and he kept random parts and screws and old tools because he might use them (and usually, he did use them). Clutter drives me crazy and I get such a high from decluttering.

I opted out of C’mas this year. I’m exhausted from a major move and dealing with my late husband’s belongings. At 66 I’ve had to face the fact that I’m not going to make jewelry or take up painting; I’m in a new phase of life so getting rid of all this extra stuff was so freeing. So I mailed cards with cash to the granddaughters, made a donation to a local charity and declared C’mas done. My extended family doesn’t understand, but I just can’t face more people and all the family dynamics right now. No apologies! I’ll probably be back on track next year, but C’mas will be pared back from now on. I’m actually looking forward to having a few quiet days to go through the stacks of boxes without interruption. Thanks for your videos! Have a merry Christmas!

I’m gonna be honest here, I dont do “deep cleaning”. I think it’s a waste of my time. . I clean regularly and pick areas that I clean a little better if it needs. My house is ALWAYS tidy though, so I guess cleaning is a lot easier too.
I’ve nagged enough that everyone now picks up after themselves, without me saying anything. I guess it has become part of their daily routines, which I think is ideal, especially for when they have their own home.
Having said all that, this has only been since August 2020. So it hasn’t always been easy.❤

I’d recommend changing your phrasing when it comes to the kids taking responsibility around the house. It’s not your responsibility as Mom to manage the house and keep it clean. It’s everyone’s job in the house. I have rephrased from “help mom clean” to “let’s clean together”. By saying “help mom” you’re implying that it’s your job and they’re doing you a favor.

Hi, I just wanted to say this week I have removed approx one hundred things from my home which for a long time I have hesitated to part with. It just felt like the right time & I felt so good having let them go. Whilst listening to this video I decided to just check a shelf in my food cupboard. Partly cos my eating habits have changed. Within half an hour I have removed over half the items in there - most were out of date & I didn’t realise. It has certainly made me think & I can now repurpose this space. Thank you so much for the motivation. 🖼️⭐️💫🍐💕

Sometimes we Moms just have to suck it up, get busy, and get in and clean or tidy with A GOOD attitude. We can't change others, just ourselves.
Also, train our children from a young age to help. As they age, if they want to eat and be a part of the family, they help. Get the team spirit going. Instead of bagging our husbands, let's do what we can to improve our homes. Yes, we ALL get fed up at times, but keep the long term goal in mind. A happy family is better than a nagging wife/mother.
    Appreciate the tips.
It does take a long time to get into a new routine. Be kind to ourselves and our families. ❤

Great video! Now...here's some (even though it's unsolicited!) advice. One word - consequences. Have a family meeting: 1. short explanation of how bad seeing ur new house trashed makes you feel 2. Set expectations for everyone, whether a general "don't leave an area without cleaning up ur crap" or specific chore chart + pick up after urself. Everyone loves fhe new house, so let's take pride in it & keep it nice! However, if they choose to go on being slobs there will be consequences. YOU & ur husband hold the magic purse strings! And girl, hit them where it hurts! Leave toothpaste all over the sink...1 fair warning, the next time - take back their phone (or game station, or whatever they love the most) for the rest of the day. That evening, if they cleaned up the mess, return the phone with the understanding that next time it'll be for 24 hours. Our oldest son was a charmer, but he had his dad's hot temper & my smart mouth (bad combo for a kid!) He HATED being sent to bed early. One day, he would not stop arguing & smarting off about something he didn't like. When I'd had enough, I said one more word about it & ur going to bed 15 minutes early. He griped about that - 8:45. Another gripe - 8:30. Informed me, "You can't do that!" - 8:15. That kid had to go to bed at 7:45!!! LOL Once was all it took! Ahhh...then, when he was 15 & started blowing off his chores, i reminded him that it wouldn't be long before he'd be wanting to learn to drive & guess who owed the keys...why, little 'ol me, of course! Never had another problem with him, that couldn't be corrected with a raised eyebrow & glance at the key rack! Moral of the story - consequences that sting tell kids u mean what u say. Insisting on a reasonably neat home teaches them to respect what you have & to take care of it. Life's going to be full of consequences. Believe it or not, they'll appreciate that you taught them that! (When they're grown! LOL 😅)

This flex schedule is something I only recently clued into. For years I tried to create the perfect weekly schedule which hardly ever worked out. Some of us take longer to learn. Now I have what I call daily foundations I do every day. Then I go to my weekly list which is laundry, mopping, etc and choose what needs to be done. I also used to get side tracked by getting involved in what I now call cleaning projects, sometimes for hours then my daily and weekly tasks were backlogged. It seems so obvious now, duh, but even recently I caught myself before I got ensnared in a cleaning and organizing project again, but then I stopped and labeled it as such.
Then I did my daily foundations... It's all about priorities, and not getting sidetracked.
I don't know if I'm the only one? I don't know if this helps anyone. So I have a list : Daily Foundations, Weekly to dos, Projects... then I will avoid backlogs. I also focus on the "Pas" which I call my public areas. Then I have the hidden rooms.
The point is that I do my dailies then I prioritize the rest, and balance this with my energy level and what else is going on.
I no longer put pressure on myself like the speaker was saying. Yes doing too much like she said used to wipe me out the next day , and I didn't get ahead.
Thanks if you read this far.❤️

First off, I love Jamie. She is my go to person when I need motivation. I love how you touched on comparing ourselves with social media posts. It’s very important to realize where we are in life. I lived in an apartment most of my adult life but almost 4 years ago we moved into a 2100 square foot house and while I love my house, I cannot clean the entire house in one day. I was getting down on myself for so long because I couldn’t clean my entire house all in a day. Not only do I have a bigger house but I cook a lot more because of my circumstances. Thank you both for talking about a subject that I think eats away at all of us . ❤

Cas I thought I was a ladybug but I’m a bee, and finding that out has been a crazy change for me. Everything is functioning now. I have two toddlers and my house is tidy. WHAT?!
You asked for ideas about new videos but I really think you should revisit the clutterbug types in a series called “maybe you’re not a ladybug”, and compare and contrast. Because I didn’t want to see my mess, I shoved everything behind doors or in a drawer and it was all really macro and hidden. But the systems that work in my house are all visual and detailed. And so I started implementing visual/detailed in all my messy spaces and literally everything works better that way.

Watching this is a reminder for me. Cas our kids are the same ages! I have also a 17 yo, 15yo and 11 yo at home. And I FEEL them leaving messes and being so not helpful at times and I have to steer thee ship solo. Working on my PhD for 5 years with 50+ hour weeks and no spoons left to speak of... Appreciate your men ladies! I know you do, but I have new perspective raising kids both with and without a husband. Been a single mama for a few years now and for anyone complaining about their hubs there are days I would pay $ to have my life partner/another adult there to fold laundry imperfectly or help some things but not others... just sayin'! xo

The next time you clean your shower Put a coat of rain X. on it. It makes the water run down and you get a lot less residue on the glass. Either that or car wax Wax the tiles in my shower Every couple months and it makes a humonges difference

I so appreciate the honest discussion. I don't have children, but I do have my n own challenges and I'm still climbing out of chaos for about 2ish years. I'm to the point where my main public area are manageable m even if they are not fully de- cluttered yet,. I'd say my kitchen is my most put together room now, and I love it' but the overwhelm is real and can drain me off I don't keep it in check. Cas, you said you struggle with the cleaning and tidying, but not as much the de- cluttering and organising. I'm actually about the opposite. I just don't have it in me to de-clutter or organise in huge chunks of time. If I have to choose between cleaning/tidying vs de-cluttering /organisi g, I'll clean and tidy, but that's why I searched for organising virus, which lead to you, Cas. You face me s some simple tips on how to organize according to my brain, and that creates the spark in me to keep moving forward! I THANK YOU, AND SO DID MY JITCHEN 😊❤

'normalize decluttering' omg Cas thank you! i think this is what i need to teach my kids (5 and 8) instead of asking them to tidy and clean for now. for me i struggle most with the 'i need to teach my kids and husband to tidy up after themselves' vs 'i dont want my kids to know me as the nag mom'. i have been trying to teach tidying and all i get is resistance. it's mentally and emotionally stressful but i know i have to cos this'll be harder later as they become teens.

I once heard a tip to tell the kids their stuff is their responsibility. If you need to clean up after them, those items become yours and they need to "buy it back". Regarding things like putting dishes in the sink, cleaning a spill...I start that super young. My 2 year old can clean his spills but if he doesn't want to, I do it with him so he still does it. He now often asks me for a towel himself when he makes a mess

@@beans4853 thank you so much for these great tips! my 8yo is easier than his younger bro 5. i'll try w them. any tip for hubby training coz he's the toughest out of the 3 to train. (i wish im kidding) we smell like burnt bbq right now from a spill he made in the oven at thanksgiving. i only found out about it while im baking the salmon today.

      @beans4853 6 месяцев назад +1

@@pancakey636 The younger the easier...in my experience. Cuz your building it into their brain earlier. But sometimes just old enough can also be easier. The husband is a different ball game. The relationship is different and sometimes its not worth it to ruin it over a silly thing. Your children rely on you to be raised properly, your hubby is all raised already....

The saddest thing about this pod cast is the comment My husband helps. Seriously. He helps? It is his house. His home. They are his children and his stuff and his mess. He shouldn’t be helping he should be doing. It is not your job to make sure everything gets done. It is his job and his responsibility too.
