- Dan and his flxible bus were the first visitors ever to climb the hill in a bus. Fitting that he gets to be the first. 35’ detroit diesel inline 671 naturally aspirated.

I love the paint on that Flxible. It reminds me of the design that Pittsburgh Port Authority used in the 80s and early 90s.
Thats the engine sound i am in love with.
I've use solenoids just like that one on the propane line before and have had them stick ON after a few years of use. Have him keep that in mind and keep the shutoff in reach.
I've got a setup on my Mercedes om617 diesel using a splitter and 2 bbq regulators fir a two stage injection. I have had the explosion proof solenoids stick open on me quite a few times. Best bet is two in series so if one sticks the other still shuts. It sure wakes up my little 5cyl. I use a hobbs switch to keep activation only over the set boost pressure also. I have an arm switch right next to the shifter and an activation switch to whack it if the solenoid does stick.
Them traction planks really do work wonders. He's got a nice bus. Killer vid man
Love the x-wing solar panel setup.
How could anybody dislike these videos the dude knows more in one fingernail than most Detroit mechanics I have met in their entire body. I wish I had a bus just for him to come work on it LOL
Tractors used propane injection, when tractor pulling for years. Some farmers used it for additional power as needed. It could only be used under full throttle conditions.
Excellent work fellers! She pulls the hill with authority on grill tank!!
$138 investment in power ;)
That's a rather interesting air filter housing...I don't think I have ever seen an oil bath air filter that big before.
Very large oil bath
Awesome video and love how everything was dialed before adding the propane boost.
Hey joey!
I run a 671 in my dump truck. Bulletproof motors.
So propane fumigation really does work. Thanks. I'd have thought detonation or pre-ignition may have been a problem, but I'd apparently have been wrong. Not the first time.
Cylinder temps are below the auto ignition temp of propane. The diesel ignites the propane. Hard working turbo with intercoooler watching egts is recommended ad pre detonation can occur when temps are up. But regular na and turbo 71’s it’s not an issue
@@BusGreaseMonkey Aha. Thanks for the explanation. Now it makes more sense to me. Appreciated.
I love how that bus looks
thanks!
Would be cool to make a calendar with your clients buses🚌
Maybe someday we can do that.
@@BusGreaseMonkey I know you have a lot of photography talent, I would definitely love to have a BGM bus calendar. I know you have a lot going on but it would be a very cool project.
I have a print shop, you know ;-)
@@dadesigns4u well then it’s almost done really haha..
That's pretty nice.:) I recently installed the same thing on my 4-53TIB and am slowly turning it up. I'm staring to notice a difference at 1 psi flow.:)
I love mine. I’m about 15 on my 71
Brings back memories of wrenching these , where I worked they (EPA) phased these 671’s and 692’s out in Boston we went with series 50 Detroit diesel’s and eventually retrofitted DPF filters , and eventually went to Cummins 2350 engines
I really enjoy seeing all of the different types of buses on this channel. It really makes me want one,but I wouldn't know what type to get even if I could. The newer ones out there are insane price wise and the older ones that I've seen make me go"Hmm". Oh to dream.....lol
Expensive dreams
awsome watching that Flexi liner race up that hill.
timed bus hillclimb course. you know....this COULD become a 'thing'. ;-)
That has always been the plan
Scott
Good morning
Thank You so much for sharing this exciting and wonderful experience
There are some viewers that perhaps may not perceive the thrill about this trail
It is great to see propane fueling these engines I’d like to see some performance numbers such as mpg with propane
Thank You
I only use it on hills and for passing
I could definitely hear the difference of the propane. The engine did not sound like it was laboring or struggling at all as it did without the propane. It sounded stronger.
Just , AWESOME !!!!!!
"Tyler's fault!" 🤣
That traction plank looks very useful. I have been in a few situations in my life where it would have gotten my out of a jam. Then again, I would have had to have carried it around all those years... More room, and maybe more chances to use one, with a bus.
We need official times for all the toys at the compound! The Dodges, golf cart, the Thing, and the 6wheeler Swamp Thing 😀👍🏼
And on foot :)
Bus Grease Monkey Yes! haha
just , AWESOME !!!!!
Scott, you now need to add a wall list that identifies the bus, the owner, and its time up Scott's Peak Hill Climb. Then as faster buses climb the hill they can take top spot, this then displays all the various buses that have participated and their respective times. Great video as usual, it was interesting to see the engine was not traverse across the bus like we normally see but in line. Regards a fan from Aus.
That is the plan eventually
I foresee a leaderboard reminiscent of Top Gear's Power Lap!
Oh Yeah BGM & some funny gas injected into the 671 Blower !
Give ‘er the beans on the green!
Those are Maxtrax traction boards. Off-roaders consider them a necessity, just like lift kits, aggressive tires, extra fuel and a winch.
In Australia those plastic boards are called "MaxTrax".
Worth getting a set. I’ve gotten close to getting stuck. 25 tons won’t get out easy. Give this time. It’ll be a thing
He saw them in action
Dyno Hill👍🏻
Seems to me that the propane really gets into a zone at the lower rpms when the motor being luged down. Another great vid Scott.
I love using the propane on my bus
So I know that an N/A 6-71 has the supercharger but there is no turbo charger to assist correct? There is no issue with propane with no turbo? My friend has dolly parton's old gmc 4106(I think, sorry can't recall) and was wondering about it. I use it in my Mercedes turbo diesel.
No turbo but that is not a super charger. It is a blower. When put on another engine it may then become a super charger but in this configuration its just a charger not a super charger. This engine won’t run without it. No turbo on this one
keep the videos coming
Is there any power or torque improvement by putting the 6-71 blower on an overdrive ratio?
It would be interesting to see the times before and after a Bus Grease Monkey tune-up too!
His tune was very close. I had done it 5 years ago. 1-1.5 thousands off consistently
HI SCOTT. WILL WE BE SEEING THE PINK BUNNY FOR EASTER? MAYBE DO AN EGG HUNT WITH LEROY? ;)
so when are you going to do a with and with out turbo on Lenny?
Maybe a swing-out gas grill since the propane is already onboard :)
It has an 82 gallon, 350 lb on board horizontal propane tank. I've been replacing most of the propane appliances, will probably pull the big tank this summer.
That was a cool video
When is Lenny going to have a couple of comparison runs; one without propane and one with propane? Cheers DFI
Next time he’s on the road
That was a great improvement with the propane. Does it work as good on 4-stroke diesels without a blower to mix the air and propane? What is the downside? It got to do a bit more wear to the engine with that power increase.
I don’t mess with 4 strokes so i have no idea
My custom harvesters added a propane system to a 4 stroke John Deere forage chopper.
They been using it for several years. They said they really like it for the increase in power
How much of an extra strain is put on the block containing the combustion though. Yes it burns faster creating extra power when you need it but that faster burn comes with higher forces in the cylinder which can cause problems long term.
90% less than adding a turbo.
@@BusGreaseMonkey that little? a turbo is full time extra pressures in the cylinder.
The propane boost you would really only use on major hills if I'm understanding right, so 99.995% of the time it's not active.
Big misconception here. It does not burn faster. Faster ignition means shorter combustion, kinda like detonation in a gasoline engine. Gaseous fuel injection into a diesel actually gives you longer burn, thus longer combustion which provides more power.
It cools the air going in. It mixes through the blower and is positioned everywhere in the cylinder and provides a more complete burn when the diesel ignites it.
that was fun do more more
Hopefully everyone will participate
Does propane injection raise the EGTs??
Nice strong clean 6-71 Jimmy.
No
Well worth the investment, and refills are cheap.
There's your proof. The bar has been set. What's next on the leader board?
You can clearly hear and see the difference. Engine doesn't big down as much with the propane!
Great on hills
Lovely song. Is that available somewhere?
iTunes and google play i think
Nice bus
Two questions. Do you find the 6-71s easier to work on or more reliable than the 6V-71s? Also what is he towing with that bus? Curious to see how it feels something like a small car using that powertrain and hitch
I pull a Jeep Wrangler TJ with it. I can definitely tell it's there on the big hills, but I go back and forth between northern Michigan and Florida every year.
@@dadesigns4u cool thanks. I am assuming your are flat towing the wrangler? That would put the tow weight similar to what I am thinking which is a Volvo 850 on a dolly
Wow that's crazy
Man that's weird seeing a 6-71 facing front to rear, instead of side to side. What transmission does he have in it?
He’s got a synchronized trans... very rare in the bus world
@@BusGreaseMonkey And everyone in the bus world is probably jealous, LOL!
It's a 671, but it isn't naturally aspirated, it's got a blower on it, so supercharged. We need to make a clear distinction between NA, supercharged, turbocharged, or both on our offshore diesels for rating purposes.
I might be wrong but I don't believe any Detroit 2 Stroke is NA. They all are at least Supercharged and some are Turbo Supercharged.
It is considered naturally aspirated. It has a blower but it is not super charged. It won’t run without a blower. 2stroke detroit diesel is NA
@@BusGreaseMonkey Thanks, didn't know it wouldn't run without a blower but it makes sense when you think about it. Offshore classification ( for explosion protection stuff ) was always supercharged, or turbo & super if it had a turbo too.
where can we download the bus gease monkey song , plus i cant wait fopr the next hill climb time run
Itunes
@@BusGreaseMonkey sweet thanks Happy Easter to you all
NOS for diesels .never know they had the 6-71 inline
Which configuration of the six do you find more pleasant to work on , transversally mounted in your bus or longitudinal as in Dan's ?
Most situations transverse but not all
Sounds like a Jake brake on the way up
Do u use the propane when in the smokey mountains or near Chattanooga
Yes. Climb mont eagle in 4th gear vs 2nd
How did you know the timing was advanced on this engine?
Because it was already set the 1.484 and running great
That must be a pretty steep grade or that bus just didn't have power
It’s a very steep grade. Video does not do it justice
A 5 second reduction in lapse time is very impressive.
Propane = power on the hills. And this test demonstrated that pretty good i think.
Oh and adding the propane cost about $139 in parts and 1hr labor.
It's very impressive, in drag racing lowering your E.T. by 5 seconds is very expensive.
Great job SIR
@@nascar427 It probably makes it burn more evenly and quickly, so may actually reduce hotspots. Probably a good idea to monitor EGTs on it though. DDs are so massive though it would take while to notice a difference. Unlike the 6.2 Detroit where if you even turbo the thing a big you can risk melting pistons etc... if you dont' monitor EGTs.
@@nascar427
I would say yes, any time you increase power you also increase heat and pressure. Could very well be the engine can handle the extra power without any serious problems
like wingnut said, would be a good idea to monitor exhaust temperature
How fast can an athletic person run up the hill?
Never had one try. Not very fast i a guessing. Most people are sucking wind just walking up it
No athletic people have been on the property. Someday....
Yes there has been bill. They just weren’t dumb enough to try running up it
@@BusGreaseMonkey i way a super fit lady running up the grand canyon trail. Was super impressed. In my youth I would run up 5 flights of stairs. Now I slow down going down the stairs. Just wanted a comparison between man and machine.
@@BusGreaseMonkey Hi Scott. OK, we need a fit person who isn't very bright.....To race a bus uphill on foot. If they have leroy on a leash pulling them and dangle a hot dog in front of leroy with a fishing pole would that be cheating?
Is there a local bicycle club??
hello ppl hay if you go to classic truck rescue he know some one that has a vary nice old bus for sail $10.000 if you know eny one looking are ther going to crush it vary nice bus its a junk yard but the bus runs and is in vary good shape
Is propane injection mainly just for Hills Scott?
With this install yes. Hills and passing on the hwy.
@@BusGreaseMonkey passing? Huh, never tried that before...
@@BusGreaseMonkey thx for the info
Yes but propane is $16 for a 20lb grill cylinder
So it’s like nitrous for a bus? 😅
first comment! - on my own post lol
Somebody that knows about mics please hook BGM up with some wireless mics.
I have not had much luck with them
Basically propane is like nitrous for diesels.....
Max Trax is the commercial name,, you aren't a real 4WD'er ( apparently...) in AUS unless you have a pair bolted to your roof racks
3rd comment, lol.
Two words: Steam Cleaner.
Send me one and I’ll try to use it
You can steam clean yours all you want. I'm going to drive mine and enjoy it.
@@dadesigns4u Greasy mess doesn't make it run better, got 600k miles on my toter home and Wanderlodge FC w/the 3208 Cats in the last 10 years, so I'm pretty sure I qualify as a driver. Build the engines in house personally mind you, have repowered many Wanderlodges over the years, I'm not a loser troll, don't abide lack of cleanliness, that's all. Scott fills a void, not many people know the old two strokes like he does, do worry about dropping one on himself, that would be bad.
In case some of you were wondering if propane (LPG) injection is safe, as I was, the following article illustrates the pros and cons of not only propane, but CNG (compressed natural gas) as well:
www.dieselhub.com/performance/diesel-propane-cng-injection.html
I have had it on all my buses for many years
Awesome video and love how everything was dialed before adding the propane boost.
