It doesn’t have the dreaded US spec bumpers of the later version that stick out absurdly front and back - thank goodness and, the original chrome details have been kept. In a way it’s actually an E30 dressed as a 2002 but that gives it charisma, tied to reliability and crazy-cool performance. A brilliant car.
Had a 1973 yellow 2002 with black interior; "The Bumblebee". Rebuilt the motor, adding an additional 100 hp; 200 hp total. Sport Bilstein shocks, Eibach springs, 2 2 barrel Weber carbs, Kleber tires, Stahl header, Ansa tips, Blaupunkt stereo & a black Momo steering wheel. Still to this day, it's one of the best handling cars I've ever driven; perfectly balanced. Taking an off ramp at 60-70 mph was never a problem! Slid PERFECTLY. Maintenance? Sometimes like a MG in the rain; it nickeled & dimed me to death! Loved the car, hated the bills. It wouldn't leave me alone! SOLD.

SurferHermann... You have nothing to feel bad about. Meine deutche died a long time ago! I went to the American High School in Ludwigsburg from 1961 to 1965, about 10 kilometers from Stuttgart. There have been quite in list of BMWs in the family since 1969 but my current car is a 330xi, 5-speed manual. My last E39 5-series got crunched by a brain-dead college kid about 7 years ago and this was the replacement. I wouldn't tell him about it, but I like this car far better than the one he ran into! I much prefer the simpler car compared to all the electronics they pile into the cars now. As they get older, the problems will be overwhelming. Guten Tag und Merry Christmas!! ;^)
As a child I had an uncle who had one. He took me for a ride in it and asked if I’d ever seem 100mph before? Then he showed me!!! What a thrill being 10 yrs old in 1972 and to experience that rush!!

It’s been my dream since 2006 to buy one of these. Someone told me I’m the perfect match for this car due to my height and loyalty. I was deeply touched after they let me ride in it. It’s such a smooth goer.
The first thing that excited me was waiting to know how the suspension setup was different, power is one thing, handling is the real hero behind the scenes.
I was just about to ask for more Corvettes and European restomods when I saw this upload! What a nice little BMW! Love the red finish on the engine and those BBS look like jewelry! The only thing I would do differently is the exhaust. It would be very nice to watch this car carving a canyon road! Thanks for the video.
I love the 2002, but having grown up with a e9 always in my dads driveway and having been driven to school in it. I'm partial. Sexy 2002 none the less.
I have one in my garage right now I'm fixing, and when the owner said it took him 5 years , and an open check book , I got kinda worried , I'm hopeful though. Sick little car , love it.
I moved from Indiana to California in 1976. In Indiana where I grew up the only thing I ever saw that was BMW and I was young at the time was a motorcycle, didn't know they made cars. I was in Van Nuys one afternoon and I saw this body styled type vehicle coming up from behind pretty fast and I though that is show off, looked like a miniature Edsel in my rear view mirror. I was in my 1966 Nova 283 four barrel three speed and I opened it up, the little mother stayed behind the Nova the whole time. Mind you this is on the city streets of Van Nuys California, 1976 and I was doing just a little over 90mph and looking back I was glad nobody pulled out in front of me at an intersection. The Nova was light and fun.
I love 02's. I had an identical looking 02 to this about 30 years ago and have had BMW ever since. Currently own an E30 M3, although plan to get another 02 next year. This is an absolute peach though. Kudos!
Perfect RestoMod right there, taking parts from the newer model and adding boost for the win I love it. Loving the variety of cars you feature keep it up!
Shawn that’s bad ass. I’d love to see the outcome against the M4 !!!!! Absolutely love that little 2002 it looks so sleeper and it’s been put together real well. Great episode as always bro
That thing is SICK! I had a stock 72 Roundie. I still regret ever selling it. Even with the stock 90bhp that car could move as it was so light. 450 BHP and 450 pound feet of torque would be incredible. My only criticism would be should have kept it as close to stock looking as possible. That steering wheel though.....
i had a big crash as a passenger in a 2002 ti.. Multiple rollovers on a downhill german autobahn, pure luck i survived. Always put on that seatbelt people. I learned the most hardest way..
Adam Elmachkour yes I agree. I’ve been giving up on old beemers, porsches and jags bc I’m tired of slow cars that cost a fortune of my time not driving them bc they break too easy.
I had 4 of them (2002's) by my own but this is definitively out of any league. 💪😎 Only thing to say about this badass is WOW 😍 👍 amazing, even it's not an E30 engine
Great looking car..... A bit more powerful that the one I had and restored way back in "92. It sounded a bit odd describing it as a two thousand and two.... I and many others are used to it being called.. A two double O two,
My all-time favorite car was my '66 2002. Tachometer?? Naaah. I was born with two of those. Mods? An Alpine stereo and a pair of Gabriel air shocks (to keep the weight of my tools from bottoming out the rear suspension). It was a sleeper alright. After a night of indulgence, I'd tilt those low-back buckets all the way back and - - sleep. Thanks for the trip down memory lane, Shawn. PS: I don't recall ever smoking the tires. Other stuff? maybe...
That doesn't sound ANYTHING like my old '69 2002!! My first car was a '67 1600 & my 2nd was a '69 2002 that my parents bought new. The fun part about the 1600 was that in 67-69, very few people in the US had any idea what a BMW was. It couldn't accelerate fast enough to talk about but I embarrassed a bunch of pretty fast muscle cars of that era due to it's excellent handling. The 2002 was appreciably quicker but still nothing to brag about... it was all in the handling. I lost count of how many times an AMX or a Chevelle 396 or a Camaro SS would catch up after several miles on some 2 lane blacktop and demand to know just what the hell that thing had in it??? It would do about 108 flat out but I didn't have to get on the brake often or very hard and just ran off and left much more powerful cars behind in the crooked stuff. I had to pop the hood every time and let them count the plug wires when I told them, "It's a little 4-banger with 96 cubic inches, 96 hp, and a 1 barrel!" ;^)
Yup. I had a '68 1600 in '77, then a '73 2002 in '80. They were the first cars I owned that would not smoke tires . . . not because they were slow, but because they hooked up so well! Even in this video, with 430 hp, notice how it squats on its haunches and just launches. I remember that squat with just 100 or so hp! What great cars they were. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
@@MrGaryGG48 I took my '73 2002 on some back roads in Princeton to Rocky Hill one day in '81, and wound up behind a little drop top. He hit it in the corners and so I stayed glued to his tail for a few miles, until we came out at Rte 206. At a stop sign, with me behind him, this older guy (about 40) gets out and walks back to my car. I was all of 23, and thought he was upset for me riding his *ss. Nope, he was gobsmacked, this punk kid in an upright sedan that he could not shake . . . in his Lotus Elan haha!
Love this car. If I had the chance to own this beautiful car, the only thing I would change is the brass/gold hardware on the wheels, but beautiful car!
Stanced out is still sleeper, most of them are style over performance. This car has both style and performance. BTW this isn't a threat to just M-cars , muscle cars could be terrorised by this also.
MrStacy1974 stanched is for fuckwit , and does nothing for performance, not too mention tyre wear . . And no real sleeper has stanched because you want all the tyre contact area available, your clueless. I’ve owned and still have a bmw e30 m54 , even had another e30 with euro e36 m3 engine which is completely different to the USA spec engine even car
Gaz Girl No need for the attitude or personal insults.. . "stanced" means different things to different people. This car can be called stanced,it just doesn't have the ridiculous camber or super low ride height associated with the "stanced scene". Thanks for showing your maturity level.
Miguel Garcia You're trolling me over my opinion on a nice build ... you insinuate I'm a hipster but did you notice those last 4 numbers on my name? I'm most likely old enough to be you're illegitimate father. Where did I say in my original post that stance car are anything but hard parking posers
absolutely love 2002s and that m20 goes so well in there. I rebuilt the m20 b25 once, great engine and it's age related enough to look right in the 2002, not too modern looking. A newer b58 would be insane in there with some mods.
The 2002 is one of the most beautiful cars ever made. Period.
I totally agree! I owned one back in 1977. Best car i ever owned! Simple and beautiful.

What a beautiful sleeper. I'm impressed that the builder resisted fender flares and recaro seats.
Good observations BUT although he abstained from the vulgar fender flares and recaro seats he spoiled it just a little with those red rimmed low rider chrome tires . He just could not escape his Yankee DNA! Everything was in good taste tile the red flared tires were put on. Well, at least he did not run a thick line over the roof and the bonnets.
Those red rimmed lowrider tyres are the best part of the car.
This is my lifetime project. E10 with an M20 turbo engine. Thats it
I never cared about wheels styles before. But after watching AutotopiaLA for 2 months now I now understand how important it is!
that is the sickest 2002 i have ever seen, 5x the original power with newer running gear, what a superb sleeper it is
Couldn’t agree more with you. I loved going for a ride in this thing.

I felt in love with this BMW when I saw it in a music video of one of my favorite artists ✌️🚙🏜️🛣️
It’s such a cool build and Tony is awesome!!
Shawn that’s bad ass. I’d love to see the outcome against the M4 !!!!! Absolutely love that little 2002 it looks so sleeper and it’s been put together real well. Great episode as always bro
Ross Lynn thanks. Would be fun to see it run an M4 down. Such a cool little car.
would take the 2002 over the m4 anyday
That engine bay is incredible.
I love this little car and he built it and set it up to his personal tastes. Anyway you look at it, it’s a little badass of a car
I miss my '69 1602. Best car I've ever owned. 🥰
Sick car! This guy is making me want to buy a 2002
i had a big crash as a passenger in a 2002 ti..
Multiple rollovers on a downhill german autobahn, pure luck i survived.
Always put on that seatbelt people.
I learned the most hardest way..
Seen the title, had to drop by and appreciate that beautiful car
So simple, so beautiful !!
So clean. One of the only bimmers I would ever own.
This thing is a little badass and the owner is such a great guy
Beside the great performance, that bloody car looks amazing. I hate all tones of white color but that creamish white looks great on this car.
I love this one! And that he built it himself exactly as he wanted. Very cool!
What colour code you use? Pls i have 1600-2 1971…
Awesome Video.. Bavarian Fan 100 ..shout outs to this builder
That's what's up..love everything about it. Priceless
Don't know why but I see that car being beautiful in a cream colour
Thats not e30 m3 engine its the m20 standard straight six
Got it. Misunderstood on my part. Thanks for correction.
Thanks for clarifying, I was wondering how they got 400+HP from a i4. But of course, it’s a silky straight 6!
In the '86 F1 season, the 1500cc BMW M12 4-banger had a max power output of 1400hp heh
@@Mac65 are you serious? Hondas make that reliable with just rods and pistons with some other supporting mods.
The m20 2.5l WAS an original oem bmw e30 engibe.
But it is a e30 engine haha m20b25
@@moza1956 Indeed my friend 😁
I love mini muscle..
I have a 2002 that I would ABSOLUTELY love to have set up like this one.
very well executed!!!! you guys looked so cool driving that thing
Antwon Harris it was a blast to go for a ride in it. Tony built a seriously great car!
Fantastic ! I'm doing a E36 (318i) Engine in my 1973 2002
Awesome!!
Great looking car..... A bit more powerful that the one I had and restored way back in "92. It sounded a bit odd describing it as a two thousand and two.... I and many others are used to it being called.. A two double O two,
them bbs rims are amazing!
Other stuff? maybe...
Ray Wischhover awesome Ray!! Need to hear more stories from the 2002 days
That must have been the 1600-2, the 2002's began in '69.
A beautiful classic with a transplanted, slightly contemporary heart. It rushes like an ostrich running through the desert :)
Killer comment Lukasz!!
Thank you for recognition. Greetings from Poland.
Long live!!! M1, E21 ,E24 ,E34,E28,E30,E9 3.0 !!!😍😍❤️❤️

Love this car. If I had the chance to own this beautiful car, the only thing I would change is the brass/gold hardware on the wheels, but beautiful car!
One of the best things about the neue Klasse was its ride due to its extensive suspension travel.
I love the "Respect your elders" on the rear window haha
😂 hilarious!
Kept tearing up the rubber donut between the two halves of the driveshaft
really,really cool sleeper!!!!thanks for posting!!
warren topping glad you enjoyed it. I had a blast shooting with Tony. Great guy and killer car he built.
Always have loved the 2002, looks like a blast to ride, well done 👍👍
Christopher Marechal thanks Chris! I always thought they were cool but this one is such a little badass!!
This is a pretty cool 2002. nice job.
Awesome video! Beautiful built!
Thanks and yeah, Tony built a cool one. And he drives it a lot!
Great Opening!!Love the 2002! I want electric!!
Thanks! Fun car. Love the time and energy put in and the passion.
My word. What a dandy.
Love it!!
I have an m3 and i'd rather have this. It's sick
love the 2002 one day........ i will build one 😜
great job there👍
The car of my dreams
MrStacy1974 totally agree with you. Love the way Tony built this car.
MrStacy1974 stance is for guady ass ricers.......dont forget your vape pen and shitty street wear.
Miguel Garcia You're trolling me over my opinion on a nice build ... you insinuate I'm a hipster but did you notice those last 4 numbers on my name? I'm most likely old enough to be you're illegitimate father. Where did I say in my original post that stance car are anything but hard parking posers
Nice build ... I own a 1975 2002 ... call me a purist but this car is a Frankenbuild ... nice but in my opinion over the top !
my old roommate had one he refused to lower or do anything cool to his loss that lill car is awesome
These are so cool!!
Super BMW comme j'en avait une mon plus beau souvenir de ma jeunesse je l'adore
absolutely love 2002s and that m20 goes so well in there. I rebuilt the m20 b25 once, great engine and it's age related enough to look right in the 2002, not too modern looking. A newer b58 would be insane in there with some mods.
that torque though
Right?!
I like it!!! It kind of reminds me of an old 1966 Plymouth Valiant, that my father used to have. It has a slight resemblance to it from the front.
Such a sweet ride, but I wish he'd gone for gold centres on those BBS'
I have to say you guys are both 100% real car guys, thanks for posting this video I love it! :) Subscribed!
Thanks! Yeah, total geeks over here. I live for this shit!!
Just like my mum’s 2002... I learned to drive in it... current daily is an E30 325i 🙂👍
Such a great looking car.
Agreed. And fun to drive.
Love this little rocket
BruXel / Apreciando.
o grande divisor de águas da bmw
o 2002 objeto de desejo...
Very fast cool car love engine swap
Yeah, Tony made this into his own personal badass ride. Really cool car.
Awesome car awesome Channel keep up the good work Sean thank you!
Gary Voll thanks bro and I agree on the car. Just a killer build.
Looks so good! What a fun car.
