I can appreciate the challenge to move it around but they do get heavy. Remember theyre --lbs of DEAD WEIGHT so choose wisely!!!
In class you're grappling with people alot more than 90 lbs. Chances of your class mate weighing so little is quite low. What you learn in jujitsu is about being able to control your opponent without strength or power, just pure technique. The dummy only replaces a classmate to practice on everything else is supposed to be same as far as proper technique goes. Any weight lying on floor whether person or dummy can feel like dead weight if you're relying on strength alone.
@@Asoka-eb8ruthe point is 120 deadweight feels completely different than 120 lbs human. A lot of grappling relies on push pull and feeling the momentum the deadweight kills it

I would benefit from a grappling dummy because Folkstyle Wrestling was my first Martial Art. (3 years of it) After wrestling I bought a 40-60lb heavy bag because I was getting into Kickboxing. After I did a year of kickboxing I thought about doing MMA and combine wrestling and kickboxing but the problem was you can’t wrestle a hanging Heavy bag. There are no Arms to grab, there are no legs to hook, there’s no head to lock in place and then I had problems with takedowns because you can’t do a double leg without any legs or Hiptoss it because it’s hanging. I tried getting a family member to help me with grappling but the family members that can are too young or too old or to bulky/Tall/small and I don’t wanna hurt them and hurt myself with any cradles or Submissions and taken downs. I can’t scale a family member (meaning Level changing and getting lower than my opponent or holding them in place couldn’t workout) because they’re weight and size is different than mine! Everything is a mess, so If bought a dummy bag i could complete those two tasks of fighting it standing and taking it to the ground. So I felt like getting a dummy bag would mean I could work at my own pace. Memorize my old ground movement and find new ways for takedowns and new ways for submissions/pins/locks/holds. As a Judoka (recently promoted to Brown belt) I think grappling dummies can be a mixed bag. I don't think there's anything wrong with them, but I don't think they're 100% necessary to train with. I guess it can be easier to teach the basic movement of a throw or a grappling technique to a beginner, but I think if you pair them up with an experienced uke, it personally think it would be more beneficial. I found that the uke's feedback with some techniques, especially ne waza, can be really helpful. The only thing they seem to be absolutely necessary for is transitioning from standing to groundwork, and I found that a heavy bag works just fine for that (for judo at least). Not the worst thing in the world, but I personally would not spend money on one, but that's just me

I was on the fence on getting one of these. Like you, I came from a decade or more of striking experience with limited grappling. With striking, it is so easy to take the fundamentals home and rep to refine, in bjj, there isn’t an equivalent. A dummy like this is probably with it just to give me those reps.

oh shane a nice little tip for that arm bar at 4:30 is if you take your left foot and point it inwards and underneath the shoulder blade & pinch your knees in it further isolates it and makes the arm bar much tighter and more difficult to escape
That’s crazy bro i was just thinking about getting one for Christmas and now here I am watching your video about “Are grappling dummies worth the invest?”😳
Nice on Shane. Bjj guys especially are always knocking on these but i don't get it. We always used them for wrestling. Everyone did. And thats mainly what i do now to in my private gym with one similar to yours. Takedowns, suplexs, throws, conditioning and endurance. Etc. But ground stuff and submissions, g&p and all that too and drilling techniques over and over. But ive got a different one for that and think youd qppreciate if you got too. One with the knees up above the hips and open and arms in the L shape , elbows in, with good hands and feet and a hump or whateverto indicate thumb or inkie direction, with an extended chin to get in under and all that. That smarty one i see right under this video is very similiar actually haha. But yiu mught want to go abit lighter in that. Dead weights alot more sometimes than human eesisisting and moving in mount or whatever. Anyway you know what youre doing. Good to see you coming along with the grappling.
I recommend for Judo, for sure. You can't do everything ( Tai Otoshi is awkward, and most rolling sacrifice throws like Sumi Gaeshi and Tomoe Nage are next to impossible to hit on a fully upright dummy). However, you can Ippon Seoi Nage, Harai Goshi, and Ura Nage (Suplex) this thing straight through the crust of the earth as much as you want.
Yo i have a question do you reccomend working out with Full body 3 day Split or working Watch muscle 2 times a week or 1 time a week… which is more ideal for boxing
Ive had one for years and my answer is: only if you have the proper real estate to match. These things are quite heavy and if you live in a flat you cant just throw that thing around. It would be loud as hell and maybe even ruin the flooring. So unless you have a garage or a gym for your own...you can hardly use it.
You could probably get the gi on the dummy by putting it on upside down in the front, then pulling it over the dummy's head. Or if that doesn't work, you could definitely take on old gi, cut it in two down the back, and sew on a big zipper.
I’ve always wanted these for whenever I can’t go to training but my dad has always refused and calls it “gay.” 😭 I’ll get one eventually tho. Like always, great content Shane!
I think it's a pretty good investment I'm able to go all out without actually killing my partners. So these practice dummys are good for working different techniques and see how effective they would be.
I would say this is more for striking or wrestling, but not so much for grappling as submissions, it's missing regular size legs and feet, so no leg locks for example. That's a big minus
The problem with grappling is that from the bottom you can throwing elbows 90 degrees from the bottom in a street fight and get more leverage from that position. Half of grappling is training without striking or training with only certain strikes ... so I don't find much of it that practical
@@fighttips I have. It is based on 2 things. One is that once someone gets decent and is no longer grappling to win but just stall, then it gets tricky. Other aspect is when you add striking, it makes certain positions not practical.
For home training yes ,same as a punchbag, never replaces the real thing but keeps you engaged.

Great video!
Great video as a judo instructor it looks great my only advice to you is not to get into the habit of stepping back before the entry to the throw as you are telegraphing the move otherwise your techniques look good 👍
I need to get me one of those no really it could be helpful for my martial arts throwing I've been throwing down before I think it's about time to live with the favor I just wish I could have stayed in karate and learn how to grovel and throw and take down any way to take out my opponent because I'm not going to get knocked out any more than usual 🥋👊😉👍🥋
Do you offer any coaching/advice services?
Yes, I run a 10-week Kickboxing Program on magnvs.io where I post a new 60-min class everyday and hold 2 live streams a week.
You can register to test for your white belt now, and our next cycle of classes starts this weekend, November 25!
Sign up at Watch.magnvs.io, then you'll receive an email to sign up for team.magnvs.io, where you can RSVP under the events tab.
See you there?
Pretty much add-ons if you have heavy bag and gloves at home while training solo keeping those muscle memories constant work!
oh shane a nice little tip for that arm bar at 4:30 is if you take your left foot and point it inwards and underneath the shoulder blade & pinch your knees in it further isolates it and makes the arm bar much tighter and more difficult to escape
He kept saying the dummy is DURABLE I thought he was saying “adorable” at first
That’s crazy bro i was just thinking about getting one for Christmas and now here I am watching your video about “Are grappling dummies worth the invest?”😳
As long as you put it to good use and don't let it collect dust, I say it's absolutely worth the investment.
So cool man, keep it up
I recommend a lighter for technical training. Heavy for conditioning.
Recommend the grapplingsmarty
Its the best grappling dummy for BJJ 🔥
Do you recommend this for BJJ and Judo?
I recommend for Judo, for sure. You can't do everything ( Tai Otoshi is awkward, and most rolling sacrifice throws like Sumi Gaeshi and Tomoe Nage are next to impossible to hit on a fully upright dummy). However, you can Ippon Seoi Nage, Harai Goshi, and Ura Nage (Suplex) this thing straight through the crust of the earth as much as you want.
Yo i have a question do you reccomend working out with Full body 3 day Split or working Watch muscle 2 times a week or 1 time a week… which is more ideal for boxing
Ordered it! Now I'll have SID and BoB! LOL
Amazing! The whole gang!
lol with me in the middle, we're the three stooges! LOL
Great for Judo!
Ground and pound buddy. Hip toss friend.
I bought one but how do you fill it if yk how to pls tell me 🙏🙏🙏
I kinda want to get one of those now
I loved doing basic combos, takedown, and leg locks. However, that mf would be heavy to flip over my shoulder 😂
I own a couple. They are good for drilling and not to replace people. I got my standing dummy for 100 on offer up. Otherwise i wojldnt have got it.
Trust me.. This heavy dummy is definitely a workout. Heavy doll
cool. thank shane.
How long have you been a white belt
You should try doing your arm bar the front and not falling back and dont use hands to hold wrist on the arm bar.
Could it be use to practice self defence in the street ?
I wanted to ask, what kind of shoes are those? I really do want to invest in some shoes for striking training.
Otomix
@@fighttips Perfect! Thank you so much and wonderful video as well!
I have a grappling dummy, my little brother!
You say you don't know grappling but that's some decent sub form
anyone know where to get one in vancouver canada ? Or best place to order ii live in canada anyone know plz
Very good use as a pro wrestler
When I was a kid i would tie off sweat pants and sweat shirts and stuff them and wrestle with them. Suplex off the coach like a boss
Do they come any heavier than 120?
I would say this is more for striking or wrestling, but not so much for grappling as submissions, it's missing regular size legs and feet, so no leg locks for example. That's a big minus
0:23 When you catch the mfr that plays shitt dubset during open mat
From my experience, if you got the storage space and will practice with it almost everyday then sure.
how durable was the dummy?
Make your own by stuffing a boiler suit with old clothes towels etc.
The problem with grappling is that from the bottom you can throwing elbows 90 degrees from the bottom in a street fight and get more leverage from that position. Half of grappling is training without striking or training with only certain strikes ... so I don't find much of it that practical
Once you roll with a blue belt or higher, you'll change your opinion
@@fighttips I have. It is based on 2 things. One is that once someone gets decent and is no longer grappling to win but just stall, then it gets tricky. Other aspect is when you add striking, it makes certain positions not practical.
Bro you’re a blue belt with that technique man
I made one with many cloth and duct tape. Is great.
My neighbor won't be happy about this
Excellent
My only regret was not getting it earlier
Somewhere there's a niche market for _anatomically correct_ grappling dummies....
