- Hey guys! Welcome back to another video! Today I take you along as I do random things in the garden space here at the end of winter! In a few short weeks the first seedlings will be planted in the garden, so its time to get some organizing and prep done!

I know! I'm in a 1 bed apartment with a balcony of 2 sq metres and every centimetre and windowsill counts! Even just having a garden bed on the ground is my dream 🙃
I feel you with the itch to get out in the garden. When the weather is so nice it is hard not to want to get started. Even when that little voice is reminding you that another hard freeze is probably on the way at some point.
Yes! For the most part our hard freezes are past. Last year we had 1-2 nights in early march that dipped super low in the teens but typically thats not the case. Kansas always has odd dips lol Ive learned to just wait until may for frost tender things. Easier not to sress lol

Enjoy watching along with you! So different from zone to zone around the country (world)! I’m in Alabama (new Zone 8) and in full swing with seed starts as target date is April 1. Onions, garlic, carrots, sweet peas, spinach, and brassicas all in ground now. Potatoes going in next week. It’s upon us! We all get fixated so on “frost dates”, and rightly so, but really consider soil temps seriously. I may be out of danger of frost in late March, but if we have a cool spring and I planted green beans, okra, etc. they just would not do well. That extra soil warming time of a week or two makes all the difference on certain crops! Best of luck to all this year!!

I always wished I lived on a farm growing up, wish I had learned to grow my own food. Watching your videos has only inspired my husband and I to start growing our own garden.. This, ladies and gents, is why last frost date is an important metric. I’m also in KS and also have a last frost of ~4/15 but am in zone 6b!!!
PS I got 17 lbs of sweet potatoes off 5 slips last year. They really loved that summer heat! I hope you get a good crop this year.

I'm zone 8b very excited to start gardening. I started my onions 20 days ago and they are small compared to yours. They will go out second week of march. I am eager to see how our crops differ with the different planting times.

Guess my Buff Orpington’s are my little ladies, only southern gossipers when laying eggs. Raised from chicks & handled daily as chicks so very laid back, can call them back into coop. My yard doesn’t have as much garden beds since have a garden with friends on their acres. But they know if I raise voice to get back in there area, they love.
Thank you for the video! We still have snow on the ground, so it's nice to see your sunny garden! I'm looking forward to when it's time to get in the garden again! I'm so happy to see my seedlings starting to pop up for that bit of green. My toddler calls them babies and gets really excited to see them. I started a bunch of new plants, and lavender is one of them, so thank you for telling me they might not bloom till year 2, I would have been super upset and probably thrown them in the compost 😅. The Murasaki sweet potato is the sweetest and does not need sugar, only butter. It is white-fleshed. I grow them in zone 4, SE Montana, and grow my own slips.

If your goal is to grow a perennial lavender, look for an old-fashioned standard English variety. They are very winter hardy down to about -10F. French and Spanish types will croak if you even mention the word 'FROST' to them. Or so it seems.
Yes true! I have an old English lavender I keep outdoors and it's thriving going on its third year. In oklahoma and I think our lowest temp was around -12 since we planted.
Hey Bre, I love you and your garden ❤ I am growing onions from seed after you've inspired me. I wonder if you may answer a question for me. My onion seedlings are healthy, but they are mostly fallen over. Does it hurt them for them to have some of the leaves laying down? I believe it is a combination of not planting deep enough, them being top heavy (I've trimmed but don't want to trim too much per your video!), and the top of the soil drying out at one point.. but I can't get them to all stand up. I appreciate you and your time and energy ❤
A couple cloudy days will make hardening off easier. If you have 2-3 days of clouds, that works great.

Rhode Islands are crazy. I don’t keep them anymore. Your coop litter waste is so clean!! I feel like a bad chicken keeper now lol!!
I'm learning that lol and it was dirtier then it looked on screen. With their coop area being smaller I try to clean it fully every 7-14 days
What and how do you grow vertically up the cattle fence ?

Where did you get the fence for your chickens?
I use a greenhouse for several weeps b4 planting into garden but that isn’t enough to acclimate them. You would think it would be because they’re in the sun all day but it must be filter somewhat. Anyway, I had no idea Kansas was so much warmer than northwestern indiana. We’re a 5a so can’t be safe till may 15th here. But once again not patient. I’ve gone April 1st before but usually wait till April 15th to may 1st. I’ve had to cover everything for several times because of planting too early. It doesn’t really give an advantage to me. But it’s hard to wait. But this year has been way warmer. Never had a winter with next to no snow, 50’, and 60’s in February. Even a 70° day coming up. Two weeks of really cold that was it this year. Still have March coming, could be bad could be good.
Our weather here can be all over the place. We typically will see some cold weather still in march but the last few years we have been a lot warmer as well!
I bought that exact snapdragon mix and color from Johnys and we are on day 14 after sowing indoors and still no germination 😢 would be interested if you have better luck than me!

Hey Bre, I love your video's!! Just a quick question, how long do you got the onions out now that you started the proces of harding off seedlings? With how many hours do you start that proces? I hope to start next year with my own onions but im like really into learning this year to be prepaired for next year.

I always start with 2ish hours. From there I add 1-2 hours until they are our during all daylight hours. Typically after 1 week they are good to go. Start with early morning or later in the afternoon when the sun isn't the strongest, or a cloudy day! If its a cloudier day I let them go longer outside. Easier to transition them.
Question. When i bottom water my seed starts ive noticed that some cells dont get saturated to the top while most do. What would be the reasoning for that ? I usually let them sit in the water for 10 to 15 minutes. Ive heard that whatever is soaked by the point is what is needed. But if some cells are still light brown then i feel like those cells did not recieve adequate water . Any thoughts ? Thanks !
Your onions look very strong! Not stringy looking at all. You must be using good strong lighting. I might start growing my own onions from seed instead of buying plant starts. I know I’d have a better selection growing by seed but I did it once and they died outside. I assumed it was better to buy plants. But you made me realize, it’s probably because I didn’t harden them off very well. My ADHD has me lean towards inpatients. So I have to fight that tendency and be more patient. It’s soooooooo hard to wait to plant, I rush the process and loose a few leaves on everything. lol🤪

Wow my onion seedling look no where to that good! They weee decent but then flopped over and died 😅 maybe a lack of fan was why?
No because I have plenty of air circulation and mine have flopped too. Otherwise healthy though. I hope it's OK thst they flopped.
My straw clearly was not as advertised because my garden beds with onions and garlic are full of barley from the darn straw..

What happened to your other chickens ?
They were getting older + I had flock problems with bulling I couldn't get under control. Our friends have 5 acres they can free range fully so we gave our old folk to them. Ever since they have been good to go - no issues at all. They just needed broken up. They were still laying really well but after 2 years they start decreasing.
