- We are TESTING MY LUCK and doing some experimenting in the garden! This is the one way to grow as a gardener and since Ive been so lucky this year, might as well gamble a little! Im doing some new things today, so take what I do/what I say with a grain of salt, since planting corn is something I have yet to be successful at! But regardless I take about the in's- and out's of succession sowing and how I manage to get 3 waves throughout my growing season here In Kansas Zone 7. Hope you enjoy todays video!

I put my biochar into the compost bins, so by the time it gets into the garden beds it is already full of nutrients and microbes, I refer to it as charged biochar. This way, you don't get any nutrient drawdown when you add the biochar to the garden bed.

This year I was like, ok, Im going to plant 100 sunflower seeds, there is no way the critters can eat them all. ..... I have zero sunflowers. :(
That is the worst! Always stinks when that happens.

I have a few bird feeders that I put only sunflower seeds in. The birds have spread sunflowers all over the property. U just need a bird to poop it out in your yard and they'll be everywhere
My only sunflowers this year are volunteers. Thankfully they are doing really well.
Same here. 40 sunflower seedlings, roly poly or sow bugs came, ate 36 seedlings down to the ground. Never had this problem before.
I live in Topeka. I bought a big load of compost this year and it has been a disaster. Where I used the new compost, everything is stunted and dying. 😢 luckily I have beds that I didn’t put it in and are doing great. This is my first year growing garlic, and my harvest was AMAZING! My onions are also huge. They will be coming out in a couple of weeks. So glad to see your garden is absolutely flourishing!💕🌻
I suggest you do the three sisters with your corn. I love beans with my corn cause it feeds nitrogen tot he corn and I get more beans! Plus pole beans grow up the corn. So much fun.
If you don‘t like beans you could also hey peas!

This was the first year we ever had luck with sweet corn, and I'm pretty sure it is because we really took it being a heavy feeder to heart this time. Of all the veg we grow, corn needs the most added nutrition in our garden. We fertilize with our own organic compost for most of what we grow, and maybe add fish emulsion once or twice for the "heavy feeders". Well, that has proven to be not enough nutrition for corn. So this year, we went all in with blood meal at the time of planting, with fish emulsion with kelp every week or two, and even side dressed with ammonium sulfate, a 21-0-0 fertilizer when the corn was a foot high. And our corn was dark green, massive, and produced 2 ears per stalk. Peaches and Cream is the variety, same one we tried twice before with no luck. Lots of water and lots of nitrogen seemed to be the keys for us. Good luck!
2nd year gardener here on a suberban lot. I make my own biochar and add it to my vompost bin so it can be charged with good bacteria before I add it to the garden beds. I also use pine/cedar bedding from my local tractor supply. I love what your doing Great job!
I sowed corn this June too after garlic harvest, they're now about 12"+ tall, some of them are shorter, the weather now is really warmer than last year & harvests are early, I love it!

I have said the same exact thing about the Bermuda grass. Bane of my existence. I am in north Alabama and it is very invasive. I also started using the ez straw in my grow bags and it is amazing.

Even if its gonna rain go ahead and water in whatever you plant. Corn really like the ground better or at least thats been my experience over the years. Good luck. Hope your garden does amazing
Hi Bre, appreciate you sharing your gardening with us! Your garden is looking fabulous and you keep mentioning that many plants are producing early this year. Hope you’ll tell us what you think helped?
That grass is bermuda grass, and some folks will go as far as saying you need to dig 3ft down and remove it all from that space in order to really get rid of it, or spray some nasty roundup crap on it, which I would never recommend. Really you'll just have to do as you did here and dig out what you can and chalk it up to having the bermuda be a persistent weed. Best thing for yuh would be to start your raised beds with some kinda block at the bottom to prevent the bermuda, but that'll also prevent things like worms getting in as well to help you out. Always a give and take with gardening.
My persistent weed is crab grass. It's just something I rip up as much as I can, but try to not get mad at it when it shows up again, since even really young crab grass can chuck out 100k seeds and just keep it goin.

I would also add fish fertilizer for that corn. I grew sweet corn when I lived up in the DFW area and organic fish fertilizer was the perfect compliment. If you get it just spray it on the roots or water it in. Neptunes Harvest is great 👍🏽

really appreciate your videos. I have a LOT of garden grade straw leftover from my strawberries because i thought i'd need way more than i did. I usually just leave my beds with exposed compost on top, but i'm going to try your straw method. i'm going to spread it over most of my beds today because the next week here in Ontario we're supposed to have a very unusually long and hot heat wave and i'm worried for some of my brassicas and celeriac

You could try planting a climbing bean in with the corn once their about 4 weeks old, then a small pumpkin or squash 2 weeks after that, 3 crops 1 bed, the 3 sisters, all help each other in one shape or form.

Must be satisfying to get the peppers in the ground after all this time. I'm almost there but I started mine in February and I think I'll wait until after the coming heat wave later this week to transplant.

Bree I read today some planted a cucumber vine in the middle of her sweet potato and it stop the vine borer beetle just a thought for you
try planting an amaranth plant next to your zucchini as a trap crop. it has worked in other states not sure if it works in your climate specific. its worth a try, i figured.
I suggest pollinating your corn by hand. In suburban backyards like ours trusting the wind to do it can be iffy.

Try a super sweet augmented corn. I ordered some from Johnnys last year. Grew to about 4 feet and I had corn in about 45 days.

Bird drop seeds for weeds & other stuff
Corn loves nitrogen use the same fertiliser schedule as you garlic. You should help it stay up with a trellis also you can help with pollination to ensure all the silk get polllinated

Can you tell us more about what you would do if you did get vine borers? And you mention something about “it’s past the worry of vine borers” I didn’t realize that was a thing! I’m in Kansas too and stopped attempting any squashes or pumpkins because of this. It’s so frustrating and I hate to use pesticides.
Ive found that after June I typically don't have much issues with vine borer. Ive read Kansas has one wave of vine borers. I believe I read that on the extension website. Harder to plant winter squash late, but summer squash ive had better luck waiting until mid summer. I will say last year I had a volunteer and I still had to do surgery on the plant but it rebounded .
Plant two zucchini plants. Otherwise, you likely won't have good pollination rates cause of I'll timed male and female flowers blooming. I made this mistake several years in a row..
Ive never had a issue but I also do a lot of hand pollinating when it comes to the zucchini since I use insect netting on it. Good to know though!! Thanks for sharing!
Your grow bags look great. Are they new this year or how many years have you used them? Also the brand? I got some on Amazon and this is my second year using them but one has a tear and another a rabbit chewed a hole in lol dang rabbit. 🐇 I really love your videos.

I really enjoy your videos but I wonder if u are not a patient person with the chickens and such? I’m not saying this in a bad way u just seemed get annoyed pretty quickly when that chicken wouldn’t go to bed. It made me giggle. I can’t imagine being tired though and having to chase a chicken😂I’d probally get annoyed quickly too.
