CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Uncle Buck (John Candy) is upset when Tia doesn't keep her promise to take care of her brother and sister while he goes to the racetrack.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
In this cheerful, lightweight comedy, excruciatingly clumsy, disorganized, and messy Uncle Buck Russell (John Candy) becomes the screens most unlikely babysitter since Clifton Webb in Sitting Pretty. While their parents are away, eight-year old Miles (Macaulay Culkin), six-year old Maizy (Gaby Hoffman) and their teen-aged sister, Tia (Jean Kelly) are left in the care of Buck. Surprisingly, the very inept Uncle Buck entertains the younger children who come to love him and earns the respect of Tia when he rescues her from her worthless boyfriend. However, in doing so, Buck nearly loses his long-time girlfriend Chanice (Amy Madigan). John Candy is delightful in the leading role giving a touching and notable comic performance. Directed by John Hughes in his typical broad style, this youth-oriented comedy is perhaps the best role of John Candy's regrettably brief career.
CREDITS:
TM & © Universal (1989)

1:51 - the turning point - Buck's revelation: he's lost Chanice, Tia is missing, and he's about to make the biggest mistake of his life. This scene always get me. While Buck doesn't always make wise decision - case in point with the race track - deep down, he cares for his family. John Candy's acting here is superb. RIP Uncle Buck
It's my favorite point in the movie.
It makes me wish we could see some deleted scenes. There's a scene where Miles tells him beating up the birthday clown and his weird lunches made people like him and how much better they are because of him.
THIS.
John Candy had acting chops - even is this silly John Hughes flick - it ain't said enough
Very powerful scene and well acted...pinnacle of the movie!!!
He is the perfect Uncle. This brings back my childhood. Best JH movie ever! Miss John Candy so much!
xxcharmed1xx 💛
Omg my great childhood memories too 😂
I wish he was my uncle
You mean JC which stands for John Candy not JH
hi
He could have won an oscar if he was still alive today.
Roman Bolanski honestly the world would be a better place If he were still alive
snowbird he not dead...
I saw him in a small part in JFK and was amazed at his acting in that film
those dont mean anything
@@shazanali692Spot on. He wasn't just a comedic actor, he had exceptional range and versatility.
The humanity of the man, Buck, when he knows from experience
that Tia's life could be ruined if he doesn't forfeit his potential track
winnings and go find her is AWESOME.
Buck doesn't hesitate long, even though a whole year's income
may be lost, when the future of his niece hangs in the balance.
EPIC scene!
Well said
she did turn him down so lost his bettings for nothing
All is there
@@MetalMadness_00 bo she turn for better
@@karineaudet6270 still tho she didn’t need saving in the end
I think Buck didn't want to take the kids with him to the track from the beginning but felt like he had no other choice. It wasn't until he actually had them in the car with him that he realized that he made a mistake. I also like how they don't use words to express that he made a mistake and replace it with music.
Erik Nelson
That's good acting and good filmmaking.
I anyone name JENNA Adam manny Anthony fed ire o Adan I'm michael Flournoy Tarkington school mrs.nemecs class you know room 205 4th grade.cashmeossidehowaboutdah
am i the only one who thinks UB would make a GREAT Father
I think he went there to see the beautiful horses and colorful jockeys. It wasn't until he got the kids in the car that he realized he didn't want to share that with ANYONE.
I love that they start calling him UB 🤣🤣🤣
Well, Miles heard the muffler explode.
I thought they were calling him dooby for the longest time hahah.
2:07 that moment when you realize John Candy could have been one of the best ever drama actors. Amazing talent!
He just couldnt do it....buck was a man of honor!
Could have been???
@@actuary1233 It's "John Candy" son. RIP
Absolutely, you nailed it.
@@Luuth he was talking about buck not going to the race and went to get tia
I had an Uncle like him and miss him to death.
R.I.P John Candy! :(
me too, my uncle was the best uncle in the world. and I wish I could see him again . i loved him so much.
You'll see him again in Heaven someday I'm sure of it! Hope this makes you feel better! Sorry for your loss bud!
I had a papa just like him
I also had a really cool uncle like him...
A true master of the arts... miss you uncle buck..
Watching Gaby and Mac is like seeing myself as a kid back in the 80s. I miss my childhood.
I think the thing is that these two kids really look up to him and he loves them. He doesn't really want them to see his real life.
I think also he's feeling guilty about Tia. If something really bad happened to her the parents WOULD NEVER let Uncle Buck see the kids again, and he doesn't want that.
It is interesting that Miles seems to have a taste of what's going on here while Maizy just smiles back.
IMO, this is one of the most emotional scenes in cinema history.
I nearly cried from watching it just now.
I had an acquaintance who was trapped in a situation when he had visitors from the past. It was either go to a gig or spend time with the people that looked up to him when they were young. Can't be at two places at once. He also realized that it was time to grow up and retire from attending the gigs. He decided to spend time with the past that went out of their way to see him after a long 24 years. That made him very happy and appreciated it very much.
When the gig was over, no one even bother to look him up. That's when he finally realize that they didn't give a f@%# about him.
That was a nice little bit of facial acting from Macaulay Culkin - Miles doesn't understand all of what's going on but he at least sees that Buck's going to do something he doesn't want to do
And he realized that he's going to have to be more responsible and get a job since he won't be making money at the track to cover his rent, food etc
Its totally because he didnt want to take them there. Why did this film not get Oscar noms?
0:06-0:09, when Buck's car 🚗 backfires always gets me laughing 😂😂😂😂.
Brings a tear to a glass eye. Superbly written and acted. Sorely missed is John Candy.
AND he did the RIGHT THING of course in his "own" unique way...
That scene of him in the car with John's facial reactions, bring me to tears every time. Being an uncle myself makes this scene so emotional for me......
2023 and John Candy still rules👍
This scene always gets me in the feels.
They hit it out of the park with the casting of the kids.
the cast in this movie was amazing ,
john candy , macauly , gaby hoffman ,all perfect choices
This back when movies was good and had talent.smh the good ol days
La Petite Maisy est tellement adorable.
I love how Uncle Buck's car backfires after he turns off the ignition 0:06😂
Love
I felt bad for him when he was about to cry
For real!!! Me too!!! 💔
He didn't know what to do so he left them in the house and sent chanice to watch them so he can look for Tia.
Buck's buddy died the other day. RIP Brian Tarantina
I've loved this movie since I was a kid, but the older I get, and having a cousin just a little bit older than the kids in this movie, the more I can relate to Buck in this scene. I wish to god John Candy were still alive. Maybe there'd be some movies actually worth watching coming out if he were.
Making the choice between what is easy and what is hard separates Uncle Buck from the rest. He is the man!
RIP john candy he is truly missed
Agree
2:03 the moment when you realize the one character flaw you have which is preventing you from being a true family man...in Buck's case, selfishness.
The kids adore him.
Same Actors From Home Alone
Oh yes
This scene is so deep & so beautifully acted. In a real life situation those kids would've gone with him had he chosen to take them. When he starts the car & that melancholy music kicks in , he's torn but he knows that he can't take children to somewhere dodgy & just forget about Tia. Surely the most worthwhile thing is getting his hands on Bug!
I feel he kept Bug under his trunk for wasting his time as Tia turned down his advances so he’s pretty mad he drove to a party for nothing
@@MetalMadness_00 He put Bug in the trunk and plinked him with golf balls because Bug needed to be taught a lesson.
@@Nak_Muay_Farang11 he did nothing to her though
Miss John Candy so much great actor great movies .. family guy
If there were two people from this era that I could bring back it’s Candy and Farley. They are legends.
Correct, legends of comedy
Grew up watching John Candy... legendary
Joe !?! JOE !?! Do not disrespect the king , his name is John
No one:
Absolutely no one:
Uncle Buck & his car 0:06 😂😂😂😂
Ďàniel
MacCaulay was so cute!
I had an uncle just like Buck. He used to chase me down through the neighborhoods to make sure I got home after doing something stupid tp piss my parents off. John Candy is a fine actor.
I love this scene, As a wild card, gambling, drunk uncle. Who will shave your head while you sleep? You might make decisions to hurt yourself... but you always look out for the kids....always.
she took a breeze UB
I love that
2:06 when you thought it was just a regular fart
When he looks in the rear view mirror and the way Macaulay is looking at him lmao
John Candy was a great actor a side from his comic persona. He had great depth.
2:05 John was so good here! Man! We lost him way too soon!
It highlights to him that he has a problem with gambling.
They're going to the Arlington Park racetrack
This was really one of the best scenes in this movie, since U.B. at first, was so passionate about his deal over at the race track, but all of the emotions building up in his mind between himself and Tia, got himself worked up to not even go there. That goes to show that family comes first before even gambling/entertainment. I love how he took all of his sweet time to think things through, before even deciding whether to go to the track or not.
Exactly. Also liked this scene, really character driven.
I love this movie
He knew it wrong taking kid's to cheat on a horse race. He did the right thing! Go Uncle Buck!
John candy was great actress and funny to play ucule buck in move and rest in peace and he will be miss
???
Come on man, I wanted to see what the track scene would look like.
Francisco Rodriguez qqaaapqq
Beautiful scene. Shows what a good man he really was.
Wish he was still alive so we all get to meet him I wish he was my uncle my uncle did look like him too rest in peace John candy
At 02:00 most dramatic scene i have ever seen, no words just acting. Great actors!!!
*"And win some serious coin, right?"* How exactly does he know about that?
Love this movie so much
I’ve been to a race track. Excluding the bets, it was actually fun to watch.
Place the bet and leave easy win..win.
John Candy really was one of a kind.
Kevin is so cute in this movie
Powerful scene in the movie in the car
The mother character was all about herself. The Dad was oblivious.
That is why Tia acted up all the time. She was trying to get her mother's attention.
I had a friend called Tia.
Absolutely love this movie. John candy is a Canadian I con.
When he got sad it hurt my feelings!!!!!
Repose en paix, Monsieur John Candy 🥺😢❤
Really good film. Excellent cast - Macaulay Culkin, (although I am not a great fan of him in general) and Gabby Hoffmann were perfect as the children. John Candy is great, and Jean Louis Kelly was truly superb.
Jean Louisa Kelly deserved a better Hollywood career.Very talented Lady
That beat is strong
I wonder if he was alive today. John candy died in 94 (early 40s) but imagine if he lived another 30 years
What do you do for a living? “Lots of things.” ;). God bless these movie makers.
John Candy
The best
In scene 1:51 I feel the same thing including everybody when Reki and Langa are no longer friends which is very emotional and sad.
One of the Greatest Actors of all time. He was a Living Legend in his time. God Bless John Candy.
Uncle bucks the best
He made a living with Steve while "doin the mess around" but HERE he pays attention to where he's drivin'...as he realizes he can't lead 'em to the run around.
Focus - Hocus Pocus, is the song.
Greatful I had an Uncle Buck who came to watch us when the folks went out of town.
Don’t remember this bit. Must watch this movie again
Mazy was so cute
UB that's gold
Loved john candy
Why do all my favourite actors die so young, Bruce Lee, John Candy, Deem Bristow and many more... I'm only 20, and I don't see a good future for TV.
Can you give us an update now that ur 25
@@JohnDoe-bo7yx sad because now Robin William's has been dead for a few years now...:(
Candles that burn twice as bright burn half as long.
This was a great movie, a shame that John Candy died. I enjoyed just about all of his movies.
his face in the rear view mirror, How many of yo have been their? I have.
I want their house so bad
So Buck backing out from taking the kids to the track is a combination of he realizes 1) that atmosphere is no place for children, 2) he needs to find Tia cause if anything happens to her, his brother and SIL will never forgive him and never want to see him again, 3) he’s messed things up enough with relationships in his life, he doesn’t want to keep making the same mistake (Chanice)?
louis brought me here, trying to track down a familiar face
keep looking.
U Bs home 😂😂😂😂
BOOM out of the muffler.
Uncle Buck was immature at one point to get ignored from the family, but he suddenly needs someone. If he got kicked out from this, he would be devastated because he realizes he loves the kids. He is making money that is not helping him, but in the past, it was the easy route.
*Promises? Feel ya, to me in really its been broken, often.*
Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, Mad Men, Boardwalk Empire, I could go on. All fantastic.
1:38 understandable reaction
I'm getting the feeling he's a mob boss
Nah, he just has an inside connection to betting on horse races for money.
look at all the garlic hanging in the kitchen...what for?
Love how they refer to uncle buck by his initials UB
@BROCKLANDERS93 no its the music that plays when tia is depressed and on the verge of tears while buck slowly pulls the car up on her and she tells him he was right about bug.. and its the music that plays when he is about to go to the race track with miles and mazy.. but has a change of heart? what is that song! does anyone know!
0:05-0:08💥🔫😂🤣
Despite his faults, he made the right choice. You can tell Matthew 16:26 was on his mind, "For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?"
I mean it applies a little but I wouldn't say that you could tell it was on his mind.
Feeling moral conflict over what the impact of a gain will be for what we lose of ourselves in the process is a universal idea, regardless of religion. His character was experiencing that, not necessarily reflecting on a specific Bible verse in his head. For example I’ve never heard that verse in my life and I knew the moral dilemma going on here was exactly that. I’m glad it helps you make sense of it though.
00:16 She's took a breeze, U.B.(not Eubie).
Macaulay Culkin is now older than John Candy was in this movie.
