Painting the First Snow

  • Join me as I overwork this painting! I guess it worked out in the end, but I wish I had stopped a lot sooner and saved myself the struggle.
I loved the gray-blue of the snowy tops of the trees against the white of the sky, and then how the colors shifted to warmer browns down in the brush. I haven't really painted scenes like this -- a snarl of icy trees, but with sky above -- in the winter, and I hope I'll have other opportunities to try again.

Thanks, Kay! I've found it actually helps to babble to myself -- it's great distraction from the internal critic! 🤣

The painting is great, the self commentary is priceless, and that last little look at the camera was the icing on the cake.

    A lovely vignette
    …deserted snow scenes
    …..talking to yourself
    ……an audience watching
…….a final look at the camera
    It’s a clip from “ the shining”😱😱

I think you would be the most fun person to go plein air paint with!! Your impromptu "Watch Me Ruin My Painting!" song was both hilarious and musically interesting. I would go see that musical. Maybe it'd be reminiscent of "Charlie and Algernon". Given the constraints (like your time limit, rationing white, substituting water for thinner) the painting itself turned out great!! You basically featured that one tree in the center, and led the eye toward the end of the canopy tunnel.

Aw! Thank you for your support of my budding Broadway career. 😆 Yeah, I was planning on having that tree a little less prominent, but it had a mind of its own, as they often do...! Who am I to stand in their way? 😊

I really love this one Jennifer!! Nature scenes are my favorite. I love how you start off so abstract, and then pull things out of it. It also amazes me how you can keep your hands and brushes so clean. What’s your secret? I’m usually covered by the end of my painting session. Love your videos. You are my favorite plein air artist to watch for inspiration. Please keep them coming.❤

Thanks so much, Lana! It's nice to know you enjoy them. 😊 Unfortunately, I don't always stay so clean (you should see the random splotches on my jacket!). I wipe my brushes often as I paint, which helps, and I have a little brush holder that keeps them from rolling around and making a mess. Do you paint thickly? I usually paint pretty thin, so that might help too. But don't let messy paint stop you! There's always gloves and aprons! 😁🙌🎨🖌

I know where you wanted your focal point to be but.... that tree has stolen the show. Thanks for the entertainment and the lesson on painting snow.

The painting takes on a life of its own sometimes... 😆🤷‍♀️ Thanks for watching! It's been a weird winter so far, but I hope I'll get some more snow paintings soon. 🤞🎨

You sure brought out the drama of that scene! And we have a new Christmas song: "Make it Stop!" This fits my mood perfectly. You did not ruin this. The painting has depth.

Hello Jennifer just found your channel and subscribed, really love your work, are the paints that you use water mixable oils and do you use normal oils as well. Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy new year

Hi Jeff! Thanks for watching! Yup, these are water-mixable. I haven't used traditional oils in years and years, but these work just fine. Happy holidays! ❄️☃️🎨
