I love that Detroit Leaker green paint! The 71-series, IMO, are the best engines ever made, aside from maybe the Cat 3406. When I first joined the Army, they still had a vehicle called the Gama Goat, and it had a Detroit 3-53....near-indestructible torque monsters. You could hear them coming a mile away, but that sound was always music to my ears. I can't wait to see yours in her rightful place, Stu. BTW, how did you like America? You look like you had fun driving Scott's Silversides.

Hey Stu! I haven’t worked a lot of boat engines I have worked many, many old Detroit’s. Worked on all (27) of the NY City Transit Museum Buses. The engine will run for fifty years or more, just keep the oil clean and the fuel and oil filters changed! Run a water separator on the fuel system.

All joking aside, now that the green jewel is going back into the case, she’ll take you to San Fran and back a few times before her next overhaul. I have to overhaul a 4-71 here soon that’s sitting in a crusty old Dynahoe backhoe. Looking forward to smelling like diesel and oil for the next month.

Having a dependable motor you can count on and trust, on the water, and having that peace of mind is worth it's weight in gold...or at least worth the money spent on the rebuild. Assemble it. Run it on the floor. Including a no load WOT to make sure it makes it’s correct no load RPM. It is so much easier to address problems when it’s on the floor in front of you then it is when it’s stuffed down into a bilge.

I would love to work on one of these even though I know very little about them.
I started watching your videos soon after I bought my first boat with a non-running motor that was also missing the harness for the power trim (your video on them helped sort that out and was the first one I watched). After working on the outboard with very, very little experience with engines and not just getting it working, but getting it working great(I enjoy messing with it to get peak performance), I found the experience very rewarding and bought a second boat with a non-functioning outboard and got that one working again too. Now I'm looking at buying a 28 footer with an stern drive (or maybe the other one I saw with the dual engines) that's not working and am looking forward to getting to know that engine!
So start making more videos on them because I'm probably going to need the help!

The Green Leaker returns! And they don't call them Driptroit Diesels for nothing. Like Bus Grease Monkey says " If you hung a picture of one on the wall there would be a puddle of oil underneath". On a more positive note, they do use two stroke diesels in the largest supertankers and mega container ships.

The most critical part after assembly is to make sure you have FULL travel on the rack for injectors, make sure it goes to fully NO fuel position and also FULL rack position and that you have control from governor assembly, remove valve cover for 1st start, may want to put vice grips on rack tube until you have made sure shut down works , set idle and set top speed (rpm) . If governor and rack not correct, will lose engine in seconds

Living just a couple hours from Detroit and knowing many people who used to work on the factory lines I can tell you that you have one of the best power plants ever to leave the factories. As long as you keep up with basic maintence that thing will run forever!! Detroit Diesels are highly sought after because of their reliabilty. Like you said not cheap but you will have piece of mind when you turn that key that engine is gonna start. Good choice in getting it rebuilt properly. Like I said.....that thing will run forever and likely out live both of us.
