- I found an audio recording of Fr. Dale Johnson chanting the first diptych prayed in the liturgy of the Syriac Orthodox Church of Antioch.
Father Dale passed away on December 8, 2022. He was a champion of the poor and those struggling. He was a scholar who has published numerous books and traveled the world. As for me, he was my friend and I enjoyed sharing time with him and learning from his life adventures.
For those listening, try not to give him a hard time for his American accent when he prays in Syriac.
May his prayers be a refuge for us. +

Someone I had always hoped to meet. Memory Eternal.
May he receive the fruit of (the tree of) life (pictured in the relief).
Amen! + Thank you.
Beautiful
I am sorry to learn that Fr Dale Johnson passed away last December. I first heard about Fr Dale when he was featured in a Los Angeles Times article in the early 1990s while he was at the Mor Gabriel monastery in Midyat, Turkey. I wrote to the journalist and delivered a letter to him to which he responded. Our infrequent exchanges continued online over the years. I had the pleasure of meeting him once at the North American Syriac Symposium at the Princeton Theological Seminary in 2004. Fr Dale served the poor and needy in many parts of the world. He had innovative ideas like the Seeds of Hope project that brought meaningful aid to the poor that helped them be self sufficient. He authored many books with fascinating facts, an example being his experiences in China, including exploration of early Syriac presence in China. May God grant rest to late Fr Dale Johnson among the righteous in His eternal kingdom!
Thank you for those anecdotes! He was certainly a unique figure and an otherwise underutilized talent.
