-UM Endings on Akkadian Nouns - Why Do Akkadian Words End in "um"?
This video answers two questions that were posted in the comments section regarding the Akkadian language:
Question 1:
How do you explain the extra "-um", for example - Hebrew "nissan" vs Akkadian “nissanUM"?
Question 2:
If the Canaanite and Akkadian languages were in our current era, how would loanwords such as RUclips, television, and the like be conjugated?
I look at a few common words in Syriac (Aramaic), Hebrew, and Arabic to better help us understand what's going on in the Akkadian language with regard to noun endings.

    Very interesting video! I have two questions. (1) Could Akk mār be cognate with Aramaic bar? And then Aramaic bar be connected to Heb ben / Ar ibn? (2) The phrase mār awīlim sehram seems like it could be rendered as: ibn al-sayyid al-saghīr / ibn sayyid saghīr. In these Arabic formulations, it would be understood only by context that "small" modifies son, not sayyid. And yet, grammatically, it is still possible to construe the "small" as applying, instead, to the sayyid. Does the Akkadian have this same ambiguity? Gosh, I hope my question was clear! Many thanks for any thoughts.

    Good Day Sir I have some question about the Aramaic language and I think you are the best one to ask. My first question were what kind of Aramaic is biblical Aramaic, according to Wikipedia you can divide Aramaic according to Klaus Beyer in 3 kinds, old, middle, and modern Aramaic. Klaus Beyer and Aaron Butts into 5. The English Wikipedia says that Biblical Aramaic is Old Aramaic, but the German website says that is middle Aramaic. My second question is what's the differences between all kinds of Aramaic, Old Aramaic, Official Aramaic, Middle Aramaic, Late Aramaic and Modern Aramaic.

    Oops! Yes, video states -um indicates nominative case. But I'm still curious about how / if Akkadian -um and Arabic -un are related. Perhaps it is too complex for a short answer.

    • @ProfessorMichaelWingert
      @ProfessorMichaelWingert 3 дня назад

      They are related... not quite the same though. Since I'm not an Arabic scholar, I want to make sure that I am able to explain the way in which Arabic diverged before I make a video dealing with the topic. Great observation.

    • @Tenant156
      @Tenant156 3 дня назад

      @@ProfessorMichaelWingert Thanks for your response. I do know the Arabic system of case endings is seemingly very simple (NOM -un/-u, ACC -an/-a, GEN -in/-i). Except that there is a second declension (NOM -u, ACC -a, GEN -a) that kind of screws up this otherwise rather simple system. And a proper name like Muhammad[un] is semantically definite - but formally or grammatically indefinite. I can't wait for the video!

  • @Tenant156
    @Tenant156 4 дня назад

    So, if I'm understanding correctly, Akkadian napištum can mean "a soul" or "the soul" (i.e. this word is not inherently indefinite or definite). But does the -um suffix indicate case e.g. nominative case (in the same way that Arabic nafsun would indicate nominative case)? The similarity between Akkadian mimation and Arabic nunation is striking: Are they historically connected? Or is the similarity just coincidence? Many thanks for any guidance!

    The pre-Roman Celtic Church of Britain & Ireland kept the Sabbath after the practice of the Quartodeciman churches founded by John the Apostle across Asia Minor until the Synod of Whitby in 664, after which the British Church turned Roman, with the later Protestants keeping those Roman dates and 'holy days' such as 'Christ-Mass' & 'Easter' without question. ☘

    I appreciate if you can change the Title , Syriac vs Ethiopic . Ge'ez is the proper name. since Ethiopic only refer to Ethiopia. There is a Country north of Ethiopia called Eritrea which has languages that are more closely linked to Ge'ez than Amharic . Since you are Linguist . I am sure you can find out that Amharic is %40 none Semitic ( you can't even consider it as Semitic anymore.) . Tigrigna , and Tigre both in Eritrea are much closer to Ge'ez . Thanks for the post !

    I' m Roman Catholic former .Recently read Moses& Joshua english from hebrew stories..It was adjustment to a hebrew Bible. Now I m about reading other volumes of Hebrew Bible..and must say there s huge difference between old testament Catholic Bible..in very positive way...its kind like boost of all infirmations,names,stories historical facts which has been or ommit or removed from Catholic Bible...cery big lost!. All those additional information helps to know better God His will,requests,commands to get closer to Him by proper understanding Who is He and what His expectations according us...He s not only God full of we should have fears .but He is accompanying us for every day ,giving us free will...and hoping we listen Him.Those hebrew Books helps by giving very realistic picture of facts which in Old Testament Catjolic Bible is lack and that's why is full of confusion,misunderstandings and most of us can't imagine true...and most stories becouse of tgeirs shortness taking as a mit,legend story not necessarly true
