villagers often refer to capital cities as "Chora". this is the case in many greek islands too, where the capital is just called "Chora" (country) by other villages.
One of the most splendid Byzantine Churches and monuments along with the Grand Orthodox Cathedral of Hagia Sophia. Famous for it’s outstanding late Byzantine mosaics and frescos, still standing since the early 4th century AD. Truly magnificent.
The part about mosaics falling apart due to time or earthquakes is not entirely accurate. Just look at the famouns Byzantine church in Ravenna, which was built in the 6th century by Justinian. It is in pristine condition. It has more to do with the fact that the Muslims purposely diminished these churches with either plaster or just utter disregard.

I visited this church when I was in Istanbul. Not really happy to hear that it, like Hagia Sophia, has been converted again into a mosque. That was done due to pressure on the government from religious parties. I just wonder how long it will be before the same pressure is applied to do away with the mosaics and frescoes. Probably just a matter of time.
Do you know what will now happen with all these murals? Muslims hided them in the case of Hagia Sophia, but Chora church is just full of them. What will now do with them? It doesnt seem too easy to do the same there. Their persistence of disrespecting the Christian past of the city is alarming...
yes I was there, they covered both Icons of Christ and the Theotokos in the Church, which they now use as a mosque, but everything else, you can go in and see, it is amazing
Is how is this ancient church presented by the current ministry of tourism and culture of Turkey? Do they represent any of the details here accurately or will this church be covered over and reconquered once again to prove the supremacy of the turks? 😂😂😂
As Orthodox st. John Damascene used the term dispassionate conception of the Theotokos. Not immaculate because it leads to heresy and schism! Even Jesus took our sins to save us but he is alone without sin...☦️☘️
Now they will try to destroy that monument as well, after damaging Agia Sifia, and being forced to leave that monument in peace. Chora’s church has masterpieces of mosaics on its walls. Alarm!!!

Thanks for the video, nice content. I'd like to criticize one thing, you said that it was looted by Ottomans but what about fourth crusade ? You didn't talk about it, it was the most barbaric invasion in the history. They sacked the city like wild animals. Whole Roman and Byzantine structures have been preserved under Turkish rule and still preserving well. You should be more objective if you are making videos about history.
I didn't mention the 4th Crusade because the building was not decorated like this until after 1204. If you listen to my podcast you will also discover that the Crusaders did not sack the city like 'wild animals'
Cinstantinople and Istandul were actually looted by the Crusnders. Arguing the opposite is ridiculus and disresectful towards the monuments. Constantinople unfortunately never manage to heal from its destuction, until its final fall, by the Ottomans...

The Naos/nave is now reserved for prayer. But 95% of the mosaics are visible and are free to see

It’s more about the supremacy of Islam; the educated Turk knows and respects the layers of history beneath his / her feet.
