John Fisher is the worst owner in baseball and it’s not close. Reinsdorf is bad but not on the same tier as Fisher.
@@aidenawe9359 It's neck and neck between those two. Reinsdorf knowingly transformed the White Sox into a 120 loss team (yes, they are on pace to lose *120* this year) and **then** started demanding a taxpayer lakefront ballpark and campus.
At least Reinsdorf has one of those shiny trophies in his trophy case.

Nutting is such a jagoff
No owner is worse in professional sports than John Fisher. He is so corrupt and so cheap, he makes former cheap A’s owner of Moneyball fame, Steve Schott, look like the best owner in baseball and he was the 2nd worst owner in baseball history. Warriors ownership wants to buy the A’s and keep them in Oakland, where they belong but Fisher is too greedy to sell.
One thing that would have been good to mention in the piece is how the Pirates make $ through the revenue sharing deals that MLB has in place. They don't need to be competitive: they'll make $ no matter who they put on the field, and that's all that I.M's brother cares about...

Great video! The situation of team names is actually quite interesting. Before Washington was canceled their symbol was created by a Blackfeet tribal member of John Two Guns white-calf. The other remaining teams are positive. As a Braves fan I can confirm that its definition is a North American Native Warrior. Frequent polling revealed the vast majority of Native Americans aren’t offended by these names. Washington post did a few that revealed well over 90% felt this way. Pirates has always been interesting to me but cancel culture reached a level where truth and fact were only acknowledged if it served peoples narratives.
Side note* a number of tribal nations adopted the term and embraced it when speaking English and so much so it’s still in use today! These are all schools that are tribal run that use it and only a few of many. Cherokee Braves, Alakenuk Braves, Noli Braves, Saint Labre Braves, Santa Fe Braves, Chemewa Braves, and Noli Braves. They all came from inspiration by Chief Tammanend who was a leader and unifier in his day. Utterly positive
Also teams like us have a unique opportunity to be a platform for tribal nations to help educate the world on their history and culture. I’ve learned a ton by simply being a fan.
Fun fact the reason why they are called the Pirates is because they “stole” a good second baseman, Lou Bierbauer from Philadelphia (Athletics at the time). The As and Bierbauer didn’t sign a contract yet which made him a “free agent.” Since the open market was not really established yet, people began calling the Allegheny’s (Pittsburgh’s name before the Pirates) actions “piratical.” Oh how ironic where they ended up today
This is a great example of what David Justice was talking about not too long ago. An owner like Steinbrenner was all in and the fans knew it. He wanted to be a good product out for the fans and they know it. The Yankees are almost always contenders and not afraid to go after the one or two pieces they believe will make them winners. Nutting is one of those team owners that treats it like one of his many businesses. He just wants to make money and doesn’t care. George truly wanted to win, and once he did, he made A LOT of money in process.
I apply this to my Yankees who are currently struggling right now. If they're not gonna be winning, I'm not gonna be watching!

This is basically on MLB. The owners didn’t want Mark Cuban to buy the team and set precedent in spending and personality. So this is what they got instead.
I'm in an interesting spot to comment on this video. Some are commenting about John Fisher being worse but everything you're saying about Nutting is true. I personally say all owners are assholes though. John Fisher wouldn't be John Fisher without people like Bob Nutting and every other owner who approved A's relocation. While Nutting would never leave Pittsburgh because more than half the league is within a days drive and the city gave him corporate wellfare for a fancy stadium to host those visiting fans (since he doesn't want to open his wallet as a billionare), I guaruntee if Nutting and Fisher swapped places their teams would be in exactly the same situation. I grew up in Pittsburgh, and never got into baseball because of Bob Nutting. But, last summer when I moved to the Bay Area being an abandoned buildings enthusiast I decided to go to an Oakland A's game. With the people who I met I quickly became a fan, not needing to worry about my favourite players getting traded with it being a 1 season thing. This may seem like Rambling but to make my point as coherantly as possible: Nutting and Fisher are 1 and the same. The Pirates are exactly what the A's would look like if Oakland had built Fisher his shrine he wanted without Fisher having to open his wallet.
Ji-hwan Bae’s ex suing him WAS a low point. Made sense if Nutting was this frugal.
I hate all of these welfare onwers in sports.. just operating at the cheapest and collecting revenue sharing checks to pocket for themselves

Im a lifelong Pirates fan. I cant stand Bob Nutting. Hes a horrible, greedy human being. Cherington, totally inept, loves to do nothing to help out a contender when 1 or 2 minor moves could be the difference without mortgaging the future...but the fans and team get nothing as usual

The Pirates are not a big market team though. In MLB, Pittsburgh is 26th in metro area population, with only Cincinnati, Cleveland, Kansas City and Milwaukee being smaller metro area populations. Throw in the fact that Pittsburgh doesn’t have a city like Madison, Columbus, Dayton, Lexington and Louisville an hour away full of fans and you have a recipe for low attendance and thus lower profits.
The 4 teams you mentioned spend more than the Pirates and 2 of those teams, Cleveland and Milwaukee are better year after year than the Pirates.
Skenes is a future dodger. Makes sense because Olivia is gonna need to be close to LA for her work in adult entertainment industry. That’s right. My prediction is she will become more popular than Riley Reid.

I recommend researching the issue of indigenous mascot use to understand the difference between team names like "Indians" and "Pirates." Dr. Stephanie Fryberg and Dr. T. Helton have many well written articles on the issue.

Far too many teams' owners view their franchises as playthings and tax write-offs. And more than a few of them couldn't care less about bringing a championship to the fans.
Jerry Reinsdorf takes the cake, it's not even close. He's 87, constantly makes insane decisions and then blames Sox fans for having the worst record by far this season. Through Jerry's stupidity, the WSox have a legitimate shot at the worst season in MLB history.
And wants a brand new baseball district on prime lakefront property on the tax payers dime.

@@TS1964Instead of paying for it himself. In all reality there's nothing wrong with the park they're in now. Every Dodger fan hates Walter O'Malley for taking the Dodgers out of Brooklyn. He wanted to build a ballpark using his own money to pay for it; he just couldn't afford the land it was on, and Robert Moses refused to condemn the land so as to make it cheaper for O'Malley to acquire. When that didn't happen, he pulled up stakes and moved to California. A lot of people say it was greed that brought about the move. A lot of other owners moved their teams, so I guess they were driven by greed as well?
The nickname Pirates came from them stealing a player in 1891, other teams including the PHILLY ATHLETICS accused them of "pirating" their second baseman. It is the action of stealing, not a pirate per se
The history of how teams got their names is always so fascinating. It's funny how we just run with them and don't question the origin. Like, what the hell is a "Dodger?" Look up how they got their name it's pretty hilarious how historic that name is despite it having the lamest origin

Fisher had one of the greatest GMs in history and he handcuffed him with just about no budget. On the plus side, he also refused to spend money to improve the stadium, that way the fans get a shitty product in an unsafe and uncomfortable setting👍

Even as a Cubs fan, I want to see the pirates win. They haven’t won a ring in my lifetime and it seems like they’re just always bad. It really is a damn shame for the fans and the city of Pittsburgh who are so much so deserving of a good pirates team.
Paul Skenes, sadly, will be wasted in the Bridge City. Nutting simply won't build around him, and will rely on the guy to almost exclusively win games.
I predict that Skenes will be out of Pittsburgh within five years, once he sees that ownership simply doesn't care.
Look there is no question the worst owner in MLB is Bruce Sherman of the Marlins. He took every single penny of the luxury tax (estimated to be $76 million) and pocketed it. We are going through the 2nd firesale of his 6 year ownership (9th in the 32 year history of the Marlins) and the abuse of the local fans unlike any other MLB city.... dude 7 winning seasons in 32 (now 33).....tell me a team that has that kind of record. YES no one attends the games....they've been horrible on the field....Meanwhile the Miami Dolphins have sold out every game since 1987....they also haven't won a playoff game for 24 years, the longest droubt in the NFL right now.

Bob Nutting isn't a good owner, but he's not the worst owner in baseball. That goes to John Fisher. Arte Moreno, Jerry Reinsdorf, Dick Monafort and then Bob Nutting follow him in that order.
That’s the problem with Bob Nothing as I call him. he thinks he’s the Tampa Bay rays when in reality he does what they do until time to turn players you’ve never heard of into superstars afterwards. He just gets mediocre, cheap matter fact, the cheapest you can replacements. For instance Yasmana Grandal. If you go by metrics, he’s one of the worst hitters in the major leagues yet the Pirates just keep marching him up to the plate. It’s pathetic honestly and as a pirates fan. I can’t stand Bob Nutting.

Nutting is definitely near the top of worst owners, but I would give that title to John Fisher. The video is spot on though, we absolutely love the Pirates and hate Nutting. I was at the ballpark too many times to count during those 3 playoff years, and the atmosphere was always great. I want to have some hope for this current core, but I can't expect much with that guy owning the team.
As a kid, even being a Yankee fan, I loved watching the Pirates when they were on TV. This was back in the days of Bonds, Bonilla, Van Slyke, Drabek. They had a really good team for a few years.

You’re wrong, the worst current owner in baseball, possibly all of baseball history, is Arte Moreno. I have seen nobody, NOBODY, waste more talent than that guy has. Every homegrown talent is either god awful or is Mike trout, who is trapped for the rest of his days, and makes terrible free agent signings and seems to kill every free agent star’s careers. For god sakes, Ohtani and Trout were on the same damn team and guess how many games they won? Not even over 500. The “gate” of a team is not the main source of revenue. It is TV and regional sports networks. Dedicated fans are important but tv, and streaming customers and more important. Pittsburgh is not that large of a TV network. And 30 Gs is real money. And the wealth of an owner is irrelevant. The team has to operate as an independent autonomous entirely. It has to operate on its own revenue. The Pirates are not a charity they have to live on their own and within their own revenue sources. Pittsburgh is 28th in TV markets. Salt Lake City is bigger.
