  • The Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France performs the suite "La Grande Illusion" from the film "La Grande Illusion", composed by Joseph Kosma and conducted by Bruno Fontaine. Excerpt from the concert recorded live on 11 January 2019 from the Radio France Auditorium.
After listening to Joseph Kosma's _Portes de la Nuit, s_ome may be reminded of La Grande Illusion, with its introductory march that grows with excitement, followed by a spinning waltz like the record of Jean Gabin's character, and, above all, the childish song gently played on pipe ("Il était un petit navire"), a sad song synonymous with death for some, and freedom for others.
Much like Kosma's manuscript scores and other belongings, the score of La Grande Illusion was seized during the Occupation. Bruno Fontaine has thus reconstructed the work by ear, using a monophonic recording from 1937, compressed and altered by the sound effects. A difficult task but one to which the amateur of film music is accustomed, constantly facing throughout his research issues related to sources, often due to the negligence by the publishers, and even the composers themselves, little worried about a material initially intended for a single recording.
