I always love hearing people discover Bob Seger. I live in Michigan & he is one of our treasures. This song was released when I was 11 a long time ago. I have been listening to him since I was a kid.
He is a performer too. I went to all his shows in the SF Bay Area since 1980. What always struck me was his joy and honored to be performing for us. Never disappointed
I love how he changes the meaning of night moves from getting busy to time passing with the phrase "with autumn closing in" ie with the end of life approaching.
Yes, at 18 I understood only the front end. I loved when he slowed it down and brought the lightning and thunder. Only I thought that was still about banging my girlfriend. Now at 62 it hits home differently and brings a tear. Bob was a lyrical genius.
I don't think he's underrated. He's in the Songwriters Hall of Fame and anybody who appreciates rock-n-roll music, knows his legendary catalog of songs. That's just my take.
I was teenager when this song came out. I’m 62 years old now. We all have own personal night moves story. Seger is a talented storyteller and song writer.
I'm a couple years older and this came out my senior year of high school - what a year - Night Moves, Hotel California, Rumors, Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes (Margaritaville), Boston's debut, Lynyrd Skynyrd Live - I also saw them 3 months before the plane crash
"Woke last night to the sound of thunder. How far off I sat and wondered." When you see a lightning strike, the longer it takes to thunder, the farther away it is. The sooner, the closer. What he is wondering about is how long before he dies. This song is about the stages of life.
I always interpreted "felt the lightning" as if he was hoping for a "spark" between them that never came (In the beginning of the song he said "we weren't in love, oh no, far from it"). He was "waiting on the thunder", but later on "woke to the sound of thunder, how far off I sat and wondered", as if she had found her love somewhere else.
But ALSO, back in the day, they were wondering how long they had to spend out, before the rain ruined the fun. Different meanings depending on your perspective, which is awesome.
Good reaction guys. If you think life is passing quickly now, it becomes downright fast the older you get. The decades pass within minutes! Hold on to every moment because you now will remember this song. I remember. I remember. I remember!
The song is almost more about his reflections on youth and the passage of time than it is about the teenage sex. So that breakdown really strikes you emotionally if you're in middle age or later.
Bob Seger was the man who singlehandedly killed disco back in 1978 when he released OLD TIME ROCK AND ROLL. I'm about 10 years older than you fellas are so I distinctly remember the zeitgeist even if I was still a bit too young to be making my own NIGHT MOVES. Now that I'm in my mid fifties this song actually brings tears to my eyes when ten years ago it only made me smile.
I know i keep rambling but I was 17 and listened to Bob Seger with my 17 yr old boyfriend, while we were driving. It was a brilliant time.... to be young, to feel in love, to go and watch my man play rugby, put ice packs on his knee when he was injured. And the music was all part of that. Music reminds me of so many times when I was young. So many bands, so many songs, so many emotions. Pain, love, memories, it's all mixed.
Right Segar had us all partying and remembering the backs of different cars for ourselves and stuff and then he gets quiet and snaps us Autumn folks right into depression . That is greatness !!!! Bob Segar the Goat !!!
Bob has the ability to make you think, feel, remember and think ahead all in the same song! He is my all time favorite artist. His music was the soundtrack of my life during my teen years in the 70's. I had the great pleasure to see him in concert a few years back before he retired from the road. What a concert...I laughed, cried, got excited, remembered and thought ahead that night. What a talent!
I have probably heard this song a hundred times and this is the first time I clued in to what Seger means when he says "she had points of her own sitting up high...way up firm and high" oh my.
His lyrics are just killer! How he changes the meaning of "Night Moves"... It starts as a thing. a noun.. "working on our night moves"...then becomes "Ain't it funny how the night moves". a verb. Word play mastery. I saw him live in concert many times. He is a music icon! Painting stories with music.
I've loved "Like A Rock" ever since I heard it when it came out. I find it hits harder now that I'm 60 years old. The official video nails it completely.
Lots of people dump on that song because he let Chevy slice and dice it and use it in a Commercial for Chevy Trucks. Bob has always been fond of $ and since he is from Dertoit, I find saw it as a natural fit. One of many great songs from him.
Bob Seger is a master storyteller! One of my absolute favorites is "Mainstreet." So wistful...and the lyrics make you feel like you are right there on the street with him!
6 decades of music. Song writers Hall of Fame, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and not many of us left that remember his brilliance, but they are learning thanks to you and RUclips
If you haven't listened to it yet, listen to "Turn the Page". Bob Seger is the best. Bob's got a little of that gravel in his voice, much like Stevie Nicks.
Cars were bigger back then. Night moves were a lot easier to do in those roomy back seats. Please check out “Against the Wind”! It’s a great song that could be the next chapter in many ways and also has some amazing piano parts. More Bob Seger please! “Still the Same” is another favorite. 🌺✌️
The wistfulness you feel in your 40's dulls once you hit your 60's. You are far enough removed from your youth that you smile bigger at the memories instead of missing them and feeling a bit sad. Hard to explain, Peg, but you'll recognize it when you get there. Seger is still touring, I believe.
He retired three years ago. I went to his farewell tour in Chicago and he has slowed down and sang some of the best music 🎸. So many great lyricists and musicians of the seventies and eighties.
I don't think Bob Seger has ever gotten the recognition he deserves. One of the best concerts ever! Floor seats at the Omni in Atlanta Ga. Thats how long ago it was. "We've Got Tonight" is a great one too
Bob Seger is a masterful storyteller. He starts out with the youthful joys of sexual discovery, allows us the feel the humour of it as well as the sweetness, leads us down the path of our own joyous memories--then abruptly cuts to the present, with "autumn closing in," reminding us that those joys are long since past ("started humming a song from 1962") and all have have left is the bittersweetness. The way he built the tension and then released is keenly, painfully beautiful. Against the Wind is another of his songs that explores these themes, btw.
1973 Camaro with a Corvette engine, painted Mercedes midnight metallic blue. Pretty well tricked out, 150 shot of nos. Hand painted pinstripes with Night Moves across the spoiler. Loved that car.
That piano gives me chills. Common poetic trope: Spring - when life begins, childhood maybe,, Summer - height of youth, young life, maturing but not there yet, Autumn - losing some of the innocence of youth (fall of leaves), fully mature, getting older, but heading toward ..., Winter - old age (and late winter = death). And the circle of life starts again.
Roll Me Away, Horizontal Bop, Feel Like a Number, Betty Lou, The Famous Final Scene, Hollywood Nights, Katmandu, and Rock n Roll Never Forgets. And about another 50 more.
This is the best lyrics of any song ever. What he did with the double meanings of words and phrases is pure genius. Summertime and Autumn mean both the season and his stage in life. Lightning and thunder mean both sex and the emotional connection that wasn’t there earlier in life.
Dude, we still have a double screen drive-in theatre . In southern indiana & it usually sells out all summer weekends, depending on the movies playing. Love, Bob seger & ur journey thru all of this great music. Keep it up.
I had a 60 Chevy Impala back in High School! I lived in a small country town and did go down the back wood's roads! Then in College I had a 65 Pontiac Bonneville! We would go down by the Wabash River or the Drive-In best time of my life!!! I wish I had a Time Machine I would go back and change somethings but not a whole LOT!!!
Most underrated part of Bob Seger is... Keyboards man! The piano and the organ, The way that Hammond sneaks in... Listen to it one more time and focus on that! It's a master class
Bob Seger was amazing. He was the first and only concert I ever went to, and he was incredible... I didn't want it to end. I loved this man's voice and music. Icon
His vocals... I sooooo forgot how amazing they are.. and wow.. all those blues riffs his that were just rolling out at the end of the song.. just absolute bliss for my ears and soul. I couldn't help being swept back to being a teen again with those lyrics.. even though I was just a wee kid then.. but just shows the song is timeless. lol Loved this one guys!!! Cheers from Canada ☺🍁
Love Bob Seger! He has always been one of my absolute favorites. Our first child is here because of a teenage summer night in a Chevy IROC. I was widowed at 41 and would give anything to go back to those days.
Bob is on the very short list of white guys who have so much soul & rythym that even black folks sit up in their seats and “recognize”…..like JJ Cale, and a few others….🙏🎭🎶❤️
Bob Seger is a legend. He's one of a kind. I've always loved his music. He so tastefully wrote this in a way that adults would get the subtle references to the subject matter, but much younger audiences would just enjoy the tune. It's not really raunchy & explicit. Just an older person reminiscing about bygone years & the memories of his youth.
I had a 1954 Ford pickup. a Deep Starburst Blue with flames and Chrome 5 spoke rims. All hot rodded out. Before me and my girlfriend would go to the drive in, I'd put the mattress in the back with clean sheets and a blanket and pillows. Damn, I miss that truck.
I saw them in the 80's in Tallahasse, Florida...wow! What a concert!! Huge tailgate party afterwards...those people know how to celibrate! It was so much fun . I'm with everyone else about "Like A Rock" and then "Mainstreet"
Remember this song well and all the youthful passions that went along with it. I remember, I remember, I remember. ♥️ There is something magical & free in youth and it's natural to reminisce on that...especially when Autumn closes in. sigh
I remember from 14 to 22 as being the most miserable part of my life. Then I went to another Country and turned everything around. Bob Seger's music was helpful with my sanity during that time.
the way some musicians use dead air and it being more impactful than filling every space with noise....that is when you know you have listened to a genius...the ability to use silence separates the cream.
First concert, way back in the day. At the Scope in Norfolk, Virginia. I've been to 3 of his concerts. The last just a few years back at the Amphitheater in Virginia Beach. My favorite artist.
That's him on piano and guitar. Between 1975 & 1995 Bob Segar had *ten consecutive million selling records and played almost 300 gigs a year. His band started touring while still in highschool. Talk about a trooper... My wife and I would go to the drive-in, turn my 1968 Coronet 440 station wagon around, drop the tailgate, lift the rear-facing seat and just chill in the summer air and yes, the seats were dropped more than a few times in that old, Dodge wagon. 😊❤
@johnbaugh6978 Good to know. My long time friend/band mate used to be the engineer there, I'll ask him if he was in on it. I do know Segar plays both instruments on some of his songs.
@@MtnBadger Who is your friend? I live in Muscle Shoals and might know him. Jimmy Johnson did a lot of the engineering at Muscle Shoals Sound, when he was not playing on a track. Steve Melton and Jerry Masters also engineered quite a few. Bob Seger is one of my favorites also. He cut many of his hit records in Muscle Shoals.
With autumn closin' in... Hits harder when you get older.
SO true...went over my head as a youngster in the 70's but now....sigh
Exactly 🎯
Every time you hear it.
These days its more like Winter is closing in.
I'm in the Autumn...
Bob Seger is a national treasure! He has about 40 plus hits
I always love hearing people discover Bob Seger. I live in Michigan & he is one of our treasures. This song was released when I was 11 a long time ago. I have been listening to him since I was a kid.
@@LesSmith45 yeah and that's his hits He's got dozens of other great songs that never were considered hits
somehow still underrated
Treasure should be buried.
Bob Seger is more than just a lyricist and singer....He's a storyteller.
Yes! Seger was very a talented storyteller.
EXACTLY!
Yes, at 18 I understood only the front end. I loved when he slowed it down and brought the lightning and thunder. Only I thought that was still about banging my girlfriend. Now at 62 it hits home differently and brings a tear. Bob was a lyrical genius.
Dude I never caught that thanks for enlightening me
How about winter?
Bob just knew how to compose a song, has to b one of the most underrated singer, songwriters of all time.
I don't think he's underrated. He's in the Songwriters Hall of Fame and anybody who appreciates rock-n-roll music, knows his legendary catalog of songs. That's just my take.
Not here in Detroit. He’s revered!
Bob seger is one of those artists that make you think and reflect. True legend!
I was teenager when this song came out. I’m 62 years old now. We all have own personal night moves story. Seger is a talented storyteller and song writer.

I was in high school when this came out. It hits different now. Sweet memories....
62 also…saw Bob Seger, REO Speedwagon Louisville Summer Jam July 13, 1980
How have festivals totally replaced Summer Jams? I miss them.
Me too!
"She had points of her own sitting way up firm and high"
Everyone misses this brilliant line.
No. Not everyone.
"Woke last night to the sound of thunder. How far off I sat and wondered." When you see a lightning strike, the longer it takes to thunder, the farther away it is. The sooner, the closer. What he is wondering about is how long before he dies. This song is about the stages of life.
Or perhaps he was thinking of the black haired beauty - and wondering how far off she is to him at that moment - with her points way up firm and high.

Humming a song from 1962 ain't it funny how the night moves

Bob more than earned his induction into the Songwriters

Ahhhh the memories of being a teenager in the 70s. And now autumn is closing in. Thank you Bob!!!

Between 1977 and now I’ve seen Bob Seger 5 times. He never fails to impress me. He’s the one playing the piano!
"Working on mysteries without any clues" is one of my all-time favorite song lyrics ever because it's so accurate.
One of the best singer song writers ever
You will never find a bad song in Bob's entire, lengthy catalog...and every song brings you that peaceful feeling.

Yes!!
I've loved "Like A Rock" ever since I heard it when it came out. I find it hits harder now that I'm 60 years old. The official video nails it completely.
Best part of that song is, it's about his friends falling victim to drug abuse as he stood strong.

America's storyteller....the rabbit hole that is his music is very very deep
As a tear rolls down my cheek.
within the realm of this song "Summertime" equates to his youth, and "Autumn closing in" is staring down the barrel of getting older.
You will love "Roll Me Away" , my favourite Bob Seger song.
One of my favorite Bob Seger songs.
Love that song❤
Seger's voice is warm, envelops you in a brotherly embrace. His storytelling is top drawer.
"Roll me Away" is my favorite Bob Seger song and is a great listen!!
Can't go wrong with Bob
So many Bob Seger gems in the rabbit hole.
The real sadness is you can’t go back no matter how hard you try.
