    I backed this on a whim and definitely did not regret it. Lovely engine builder

    Duct Tape is a wild resource - YES!!!
    In all seriousness, this looks like good fun and a next level engine builder. I also like the emphasis on "it has a solo mode" after the solo video. Thanks for the awesome reviews - it helps sort out where to focus the game energy 😝

    Ah, so we missed the bit in the rules where you can only play on a phase if you either have a card or there is a yellow cube on it. So for our design example in this video, assume there's a yellow cube on it.
    As for the game itself, very hard to look past the Wingspan comparisons and i think that will hurt raising robots long term, despite it being an excellent game in its own right. I find it so funny that i didn't care much for wingspan, and then wyrmspan comes along and is just, that game but better. And Raising robots, it's the next step up from Wyrmspan, even though it came out first, and i like it even more. I also skipped the variable player powers in detail here, because they are really game changing and you'll need to explore them yourself.

      But not 'Gold Medal' worthy?

    • @3MBG
      @3MBG  5 месяцев назад +2

      Nah, just because it is too derivative of Wingspan. It's a good game, i loved playing it. But yeah, i tend to judge games that are a bit too derivative a bit more harshly in this regard.

    • @3MBG
      @3MBG  5 месяцев назад +2

      Or to put it another way. Wyrmspan gets it, because to me that the designer and publisher making some tweaks to their own game i had issues with, and making it into the game i always wanted wingspan to be. That's quite different to another publisher doing the same thing if that makes any kind of sense.

      @@3MBG Yes, derivative was the feel I got watching this. Often a guarantee of a good solid game, but if it all feels familiar, then it's another reason for this game to not stand out. There's also a risk that the art style creates a mis-match of expectations, which I find surprisingly common, as if the marketing people think board games are for kids, but the designers are aiming them at more mature adults.
      In addition, by delving so deep into combos (something I also noticed in wyrmspan), it will reward groups who play a game repeatedly together, whereas our gaming group almost always has at least 1 player new to the game. When there is little interaction, this can result in an experienced player diving straight into a combo strategy, with a player new to the game focused on the mechanisms / gameplay loop. At least with more interactive euros, new players are much more aware of what others are doing, making it easier to spot what's important, but this can be much harder with the more multiplayer solitaire style games, and also frustrating when they realise the experienced player has extended super-turns (as happens in wyrmspan). At worst it can also risk looking like 'dick over the new player', something I find uncomfortable for sure. I do see the appeal, but I'm finding games that lean very heavily into this style of gameplay combos poorly suited to the gaming we do.

    For this type of game, Earth is the GOAT IMO. Raising Robots is a close second though, and I prefer both well over Wing/Wyrmspan

    My copy finally came. Went in on the deluxe with someone else (because he backed and how good Stockpile from the same publisher is) but for some reason they only sent us one last year. Ironically, the projected fulfillment date was supposed to be May so it was still before they said.

    I'd love to see you attempt a 3 minute video on Age of Steam. Going to teach it to others this Thursday and trying to find a good teaching vid of it that isn't a 3hr Heavy Cardboard video is rough. I know other game designers love said Martin Wallace game; such as Ted Alspach of Bezier games that created dozens of maps for it.

    • @3MBG
      @3MBG  5 месяцев назад

      Ha, i only played age of steam once and it bored the pants off me. That might have been the group i was playing it with though, but i've rarely wanted a game to end more than that one.

    • @maxpowr90

      @@3MBG It's a Martin Wallace game. It's not supposed to be 'friendly'! He also did AuZtralia; which is just as rough.

    • @3MBG
      @3MBG  5 месяцев назад

      Friendly wasn't the issue. It was probably playing it at a con in a crowded room, just couldnt really focus on it well

    When I played (prototype form) I did not care for the center energy/phase thing. It always felt random which phases went off and how much energy things could fall apart easily. I know you could kinda count cards but at high player count I was not going to sit and math all that out for it still at min be like 50/50 chance I may kinda know. But the actual running the lanes is good. Interesting. But I have Wingspan so I don't need another where they tired to solve the player interaction and that it really didn't. Could be a good pickup if you play heavy games and never got wingspan or sold it.

    Yea I saw another review of this game a bit ago and they viewed it as a fare better version of wingspan,,, perhaps with the alternative Wyrmspan. What is it with these games structured games at the moment? That player board looks very busy though.

    • @3MBG
      @3MBG  5 месяцев назад +1

      Its part of a larger system. In inventors, you get upgrade tiles you put into 3 rows, and each row can be activated once per full round. Its' quite similar.

      I was never a big fan of Wingspan, either. Liked the artwork and production, but found the game relatively average. Raising Robots I found a lot more enjoyable and it’s hard not to love the cute robot artwork. I’m pretty keen to get my own copy.

      @@ratguy69 Similar here - though I suspect I liked the art and general aesthetics even more, to the degree I was happy to enjoy the game with the competitive drive turned right down, whilst taking greater joy from the overall experience. The gameplay loop didn't appeal.
