As a Packers fan, I am hopeful because I DO expect the defense to get better. If rumors are to be believed Joe Barry is losing the locker room, so SOMETHING is going to end up changing. And it's not like our Defense is without talent, they're just not being put in positions to succeed. We drafted guys that excel at man, and Barry loves his shell/zone looks. It took nearly 2 months for him to let Jaire follow the star receiver around. Unlike on offense, I feel like our defensive struggles are very fixable, we just have an incompetent DC and a head coach that is too reliant on his coordinators coordinating.
@@tylerr.5676 honestly I read the first sentence and assumed the rest. After reading your whole statement, you made good points. I think the defense would look so much better if the offense wasnt dog shit.
I love the breakdown of the strategies the Jets used. Very informative. I have an objection to your comments about the Packers pace and how it relates to their defense. A bad defense is bad regardless of whether it's paired with a good or bad offense, or a fast or slow offense. In this case the Packers slow pace hurt them despite drive success, but mainly because they were trailing. In a neutral situation slow pace is not hurt especially by a bad defense. Slow pace limits possessions and scoring for BOTH teams. Advantageous while winning, but a disadvantage while losing. Unfortunately for the Packers, besides being better at running this game, they simply did not have the players to run much hurry-up. With Lazard and Cobb out and Sammy Watkins leaving the game late they had no WRs experienced enough to run a good hurry up when they really needed to. This passing offense COULD look a lot better if Lazard and Cobb can both come back healthy later in the season, especially once the you guys get a bit more experience.
Whats interesting to see how long Green Bay’s drives are when they’re running the ball, it really seems like they can’t generate explosive runs, something that I, as a Colts fan, can relate to so well. It seems like the two have similar problems on that front, caused by much of the same issue, o-line troubles.
Thank you for these breakdowns. I really like the detail you use. I'm a fan that favors the defensive side of the ball and you're the only 1 that gives me visual examples. I took some time to watch some Bama, Tenn( when Jeremy pruitt was there) and UGA clinics and they explained some things they do. Including this like stubbie and stomp etc. Thank you
The Packers defense is where a lot of the blame for this lies. The optimistic scenario going into this season was that while the Packers offense would struggle at least early and have to rely on slow-developing run-heavy drives, the defense would be a top-5 unit that would keep them in games. And that wasn't an unrealistic expectation--they had studs on the line (Clark), at the edge (Gary/Smith), in the secondary (Alexander) and even at linebacker (Campbell). Unfortunately, they have Joe Barry, a complete hack, at DC, and he has badly misused every single one of those studs. It was obvious from the first half of week 1, when Minnesota basically blew them out of the stadium. And I think the Packers realized that very early on--it's why they kept going back to the passing game time after time, even though it wasn't working. We saw what happens when they try to play the offense as designed, and it's not pretty.
Great video, This was surprisingly helpful for me as a packer fan to be able to understand and cope with greenbays underachieving this season and well done on not just blaming greenbays struggles on lack of wide receiver talent and calling it a day like most people on the internet have been doing
Really wish you broke down the defensive scheme of the packers. I'm not nearly as knowledgeable about football as you are but I feel like the defense isn't being schemed to the players strengths.
As a packers fan, everybody knows that on 3rd down all you need to do is blitz or bring pressure and you got them. I believe they don’t have the wr talent to create separate quick enough to throw the ball in case of blitz
Hey Brett, great video. Since math and stats isn't your strong suit, just a few nitpicks. 4:10 - 3rd Down Rate: 47.2% to 28.6% isn't a "20% drop". It's (0.286-0.472)/0.472 = 39.4% drop in efficiency. Basically, the Packers are 40% worse than the previous two years, not 20%.
The second I saw the bears got Claypool I knew the packers were screwed because now the wideout to beat man coverage is gone. I think Romeo could still do it, but that is a lot to ask for the rookie knowing he is going to get the ball about 15 time a game and he needs to catch it or the drive ends.
I'm not really sure how the defense can really turn itself around at the moment. They're middle of the pack mainly because they're TERRIBLE on run defense, partially because of some young players freelancing too much but mainly because they're designed for speed, and to be an elite pass defense. But then their pass defense is more good than great, so it doesn't feel worth it. Also, these type of bend-but-don't-break defenses are designed to be paired with elite offenses, where the game script is in their favor.
The issue with combing pass and run success rates is that a “successful” rush play usually just barely meets the “success” requirement while a successful pass is almost always a first down or close to it. You could have 2/3 successful run plays on a series and still be left with 4 and short while a 1/3 success rate on pass plays on a series is likely going to result in a first down. Their 3rd down success rate is likely so low bc their passing game sucks. Having a good rushing success offense doesn’t mean you’re converting first downs. Running a lot is a recipe for making your team convert 3rd downs. Also, their issues have nothing to do with TOP but rather thinking they can have an elite offense by relying on the run. Burning a lot of clock is neither good nor bad unless you’re factoring in the current score of the game (maintaining a lead/overcoming a deficit). Their rushing EPA in this game was .14 which is ab the max you can achieve in a game running the ball. Most good passing offenses can reach .3 to .5 in a given game.
I thought he conflated the TOP issue, by not adding that by proxy their defenses will be fresher and playing against overall less possessions. Them burning out possessions faster would make the game more higher scoring but would still lose by the same point total.
@@koodigocrxzy465 Yeah I thought the point he was making (if I even understand it) was a little misguided. The whole point ab it being harder to reach the magical “28 points” if you take more time off the clock didn’t make sense. It’s not about how much time you take off the clock, but whether you score or stop the other team from scoring on a given possession. The ending total can vary widely and may not accurately reflect how good the offense or defense actually was. I think the issue with them running out of time at the end of halves is more of an issue with passing ability and time management.

And yes, fall in buffalo is my favorite season in any place in the world. hope you had a chance to check out some of the farmer's markets out there, the apple harvest is something else all together.
@@BrettKollmann nothing better in the fall, hope you made it up to youngstown, some of the best apple farms in the world up there, side of the road stands just beautiful drive, and some great stuff to get. if you didn't this year, it's definitely worth the side trip next fall you are in town, bills will be good for years to come so i'm sure youll make it. love the content keep grinding, i've got a good nose for youtube channels, youll be over a million soon enough.
the thing about GB's defense is that they have the personnel to be dominant, that ultimately falls on their DC imo. also the GM needs to go at this point, the team needs a new direction because they cant seem to commit to any 1 strategy. you draft Love as the heir apparent to Rodgers but then decide to keep Rodgers after he found his form again. if you keep Rodgers then you have to sell out to try and win with him, instead they go for the half in half out approach of wasting early draft picks on players that arent helping them in the short term. if they wanted to draft players who might be able to make a real impact a season or two down the line then they shouldve traded Rodgers and committed to Love as their guy long term.
When you pay your QB like a God, he will play with average teammates. That's how it was in New Orleans after the Superbowl. Brees took pay cuts, so he would have receivers and blockers.
This is a solid breakdown of why Rodgers is struggling this year! I'd love to see a Commanders video about why they seem to perform so much better with Heineke vs Wentz
I really thought you was gonna get into the poor coaching of the defensive players Brett. There's a lot of Blown coverages in their defensive schemes to get them at the championship level.
OMG THIS VIDEO IS MUCH NEEDED. How does GB have so many great names in that defensive personel and they are not dominating? Joe Barry did revamp Campbell's career but at the same time the Packers in coverage have been giving up alot of plays and I think it's because of poor coaching.
I'm an English guy with a rugby background and have started getting into the NFL. Little did I know the complexity of the game. Christ, I watched a video about how my Packers are a strugglebus…from a self-proclaimed Bears fan…and I agreed with every part of what he said. Dammit, Brett. That video hurt so good.
Wow can’t believe Brett’s up to 340k subs! I haven’t really been paying attention to numbers but I remember discovering him at around 80-100k, time flies
The defensive bits are a little overblown, of course they're going to be pretty bad when the offense can't give them any time to rest. Not saying they're doing enough, but they showed that they can hang with proper rest against Buffalo.
You bring up a good point that a run heavy offence to any degree would need a good defence to allow for the win in possessions. The biggest example I can think of is the pete Carroll Seahawks' legion of boom era with Marshawn Lynch.
I have a couple rebuttles for you Brett. Even in past years when the Packers pass offense was better, they still had a ton of long, time consuming scoring drives. They havent been a quick strike offense since the days of prime Jordy Nelson. A big reason for it is that Rodgers loves to drain the playclock to try to get the defense to show its hand and regularly snaps the ball as the playclock is about to expire. And we only saw them go into the run heavy offense midway through the 2nd quarter when they were already down 14-0. Had they come out with this approach from their first drive, it may have been a completely different game. As for the defense, its true they have underperformed. But they are a small and fast defense designed to play with a lead which the offense hasnt provided them with very often this year. Give them some early leads and they will look much different. Ive been saying it all year long that this team needs to commit to the run early and often and mirror their pass game to the run with playaction. Well they finally proved they can run the ball (against the best defense in football) and now they need to get the playaction rolling to compliment that run game.

Hey Brett, Bills fan here, hope you had fun in Orchard Park, that tailgating is something else isn't it? And yes, fall in buffalo is my favorite season in any place in the world. hope you had a chance to check out some of the farmer's markets out there, the apple harvest is something else all together.
Western New York apple cider goes FUCKING HARD man
@@BrettKollmann nothing better in the fall, hope you made it up to youngstown, some of the best apple farms in the world up there, side of the road stands just beautiful drive, and some great stuff to get. if you didn't this year, it's definitely worth the side trip next fall you are in town, bills will be good for years to come so i'm sure youll make it. love the content keep grinding, i've got a good nose for youtube channels, youll be over a million soon enough.
I think a JF video or bears rushing attack video is a must
the thing about GB's defense is that they have the personnel to be dominant, that ultimately falls on their DC imo. also the GM needs to go at this point, the team needs a new direction because they cant seem to commit to any 1 strategy. you draft Love as the heir apparent to Rodgers but then decide to keep Rodgers after he found his form again. if you keep Rodgers then you have to sell out to try and win with him, instead they go for the half in half out approach of wasting early draft picks on players that arent helping them in the short term. if they wanted to draft players who might be able to make a real impact a season or two down the line then they shouldve traded Rodgers and committed to Love as their guy long term.
Great video. Would love a similar film study on whats going wrong in Denver
20:31 That's cold, lol.
u cant talk abt the dfense in the bils game because we had 3rd string and 2nd string linebackers and corners
The packers mindset at this point is just “if it broke, don’t fix it”
I really thought you was gonna get into the poor coaching of the defensive players Brett. There's a lot of Blown coverages in their defensive schemes to get them at the championship level.
POV you’re watching this after the Lions game
OMG THIS VIDEO IS MUCH NEEDED. How does GB have so many great names in that defensive personel and they are not dominating? Joe Barry did revamp Campbell's career but at the same time the Packers in coverage have been giving up alot of plays and I think it's because of poor coaching.
Well just as a start: JAIRE ALEXANDER ISN'T ALLOWED TO SHADOW THE OTHER TEAMS WR1
@@josephboehmer1245 Why?
@@SuperMurray2009 because Joe Barry is not a smart man.
@@josephboehmer1245 Why?
@@RenegadeLK why is Joe Barry dumb? Bad schools, I'd assume
"But also equally bad, for equally different reasons" 😂
That intro was so cinematic Brett geez
Brett your life rules! I have watched the come up and this season you are living my dream. Keep on rocking brother.
I'm an English guy with a rugby background and have started getting into the NFL. Little did I know the complexity of the game. It's much more like live chess than rugby and it's based on prearranged plays, this is super interesting and Brett is my number one go to. Clear, concise and exacting information and clearly a very bright mind for the game.. amazing content with actual value not like 99% of RUclips... And guys help me. Englishman with no American affiliation. Who should I support as my team???
If the Packers are broken what does that make the Lions?
As bears fan I’m doing the evil laugh 😂😂
As a bears fan nothing makes me happier then seeing Packers fan complain about problems the bears have had for a decade
Decade haha id say a couple
We still own you guys dont trip,we finally have a Mediocre Offense
@@justinborland1899 enjoy the next decade of having the Bears being better than y’all
@@justinborland1899 as a fan of a team that isn’t a rival to either, while the packers have been good, it’s sad you guys only got 2 rings with 2 HoF QBs.
@John Stamos haha even on a bad season still gonna be ahead of yall on wins and playoffs
I would pay money to watch a game with Brett to explain everything
Get 2 devices. Stream TNF mute it have livestream open
This is what you get when you have 1 man 50 millions per year offense. Should off traded Rodgers last year, when he won the MVP. The rebuilding should of started this year.
Problem is i dont trust Gutey to do the rebuild. Should've traded Rodgers & fired Gutekunt
Bills tailgate looks amazing
We're losing to the frickin dandelions tomorrow
Aaaaaand they did. Told ya
*_good shiit my doode._* I like to think there's coaches subscribed to your channel, and everytime you release a video their frantically taking notes.
BRETT WHAT HAVE YOU DONE
I think they were already down when they went to ball control. If they start from the get go, it will be more effective.
"They can beat the Lions" HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
You bring up a good point that a run heavy offence to any degree would need a good defence to allow for the win in possessions. The biggest example I can think of is the pete Carroll Seahawks' legion of boom era with Marshawn Lynch.
You have so stepped up your game!! Love this vid!
They cannot, in fact, beat the lions. 😢
Which is probably even worse!
Thanks for cursing the lions a win we really needed it!
Great job love your perspective
Ahem. "Were" broken.
Methinks they MAY have figured things out.
Too soon to tell
Its the curse fueling them
Bears fans sitting in their lounge chairs and sipping on a glass of wine while watching the downfall of the Packers
The pain of starting this video before the Packers Lions game, getting distracted, and now finishing it the next day... this hurts...
The thumbnail work has been excellent. Goddamn
Can you make a video why Raiders are struggling even though they have a lot of weapons on offense?
We need to send this to Tom Grossi.
What the fuck!? This production quality is unreal. Wow.
Thank you!
This day has finally come! I’m a bears fan
Bret, as a Brit who grew up in Houston and is by default a Texans fan, can we have a video of Pierce being an absolute beast please? Love you.
