“This isn’t reality. This is Fantasy!”
She made the world better just by being in it. How fitting she was the communications officer and translator, when her goal and her destiny was to help us all hear each other, to see each other, and to speak to each other as equals… just a little more clearly.

Those who never had to look to find even the smallest amount of positive representation for themselves cant begin to understand how important Nichelle is. Nichelle had to do what she did in the face of racism and sexism. Having her character's relevance cut down constantly, being locked out of entering the studio, the absolutely dehumanizing experience of knowing you are being treated this way because of something you cannot (and would not) change. She wanted to leave and that would have been fair, but she stayed in part as a love song to every Black fan who wanted to SEE that they belonged up there just as much as anyone else. Thank you Nichelle. We will continue to thank you always.

I grew up a skinny, nerdy white boy in the deep, DEEP South, soaking in casual racism all around me every day. Ms. Nichols and her presence in STAR TREK was one of the things that helped me see past the lack of diversity in my own little southwest-Louisiana world early on and overcome the perceptions and attitudes I was surrounded with. She has been a heroine of mine ever since. The world is darker without her...but the sky is brighter by one more star. Rest in power, ma'am...and thank you.

(I don't speak English, I hope the translation is correct)
In July of this year 2022, Nichelle Nichols, the unforgettable Lieutenant Uhura, has embarked on her definitive star trek. Singer and actress, Nichelle played Uhura in the original series "Star Trek", broadcast from 1966 to 1969. Until then, on American television there were practically no leading characters of the black race; Uhura was female and black, which was unprecedented for a leading or moderately leading character. At a certain point, Nichelle thought of leaving the series, because there were some good opportunities for her musical career, and because she considered that her character, although it was more or less leading, was not really that important; but Martin Luther King himself convinced her that her presence on the command bridge of the spaceship "Enterprise" constituted, by itself, a very powerful positive influence for the black community, and within it, very particularly for girls. Today, in 2022, it is very difficult to understand the weight of that influence (among other things, television was much more influential at that time than it is today), but at that time, in many countries (in all?), being a woman of the black race was a condemnation in many ways, and yet, suddenly, hundreds or thousands of black girls watched in amazement a television series that told them: "The day will come when a black woman will no longer have limits to her achievements" (It is beautiful and significant that the name “Uhura” was a euphonious variation of the Swahili word “Uhuru”, which means “freedom”). So Nichelle Nichols decided to continue in the series, and King's words proved to be absolutely true: many prominent or successful black women have declared the influence that the character of Uhura had on them on a personal level. A clear example: Mae Jemison, who in 1992 became the first black woman to travel to outer space (and who, in addition to having been an astronaut, is a doctor by profession, and has formal studies in engineering, dance, and African and African-American culture) was so inspired by Lieutenant Uhura, that she wanted and managed to participate in an episode (in 1993) of "Star Trek: The Next Generation", which was the first series sequel to the original series. As if all this were not enough, after the end of "Star Trek" Nichelle Nichols was a representative of the campaign that NASA began to attract women and ethnic minorities, after which, in 1978, for the first time in history they entered the NASA men belonging to ethnic minorities, and women. In short: in all of television history, very few characters (if any!) have had such a huge and positive influence on the real world as Lieutenant Uhura. Today, in 2022, we see very big flaws in the original "Star Trek" (and not just in the production, although that's the most glaring thing), but they are far outweighed by the merits it had, and of those merits, the ethically more important and influential was undoubtedly the character of Uhura.
Today, in 2022, together with the black community, also the community of fans of the many “Star Trek” series, the great “Trekkie” family, bids farewell to Lieutenant Uhura, on this, her last journey to the stars. This time she is not on board the "Enterprise", but she will undoubtedly meet with colleagues from the original crew who are already there. Surely she can already spot, in the distance, Leonard Nimoy, the unforgettable Mr. Spock, welcoming her with the characteristic Vulcan salute. My appreciation for your work and your inspiring influence, Nichelle, and my thanks for your character, who beautifully was a part of my childhood, when the boy I was became a "Trekkie", which I still and will continue to be.

I wish there had been MORE! 😁 Nichelle was a lovely woman with a successful acting and singing career, and for most people this would have been enough, but then she went to NASA. Her work encouraging minorities to consider NASA as a career choice brought a diversity to the U.S. space program that was a benefit to us all.

Lucky for Star Trek, she stayed on the show. In 1967 or 1968, she either had the part or auditioning for Mannix as Peggy Fair. She didn't do it. Martin Luther King talked to her and said she needed to stay to be an influence on black children. There weren't many black actors on TV, and if there were, they had a role of servant or something lesser than a main role.

I've been a huge Star Trek fan since I was about 12. I loved all of the actors and characters that they portrayed. I didn't hear a single one of these people mention her acting talent. They only mentioned her for 'racial equality fodder'.. When will EVERYBODY start seeing "The content of character" instead of the amount of melatonin in a person's skin?

Why not include the three living legends that actually worked with her and started this franchise with her?

The likely answer, none of them are actively working on projects with Paramount. They'd have to go thru their agents, negotiate the appearance (even if it was free), coordinate filming. It's easier to get the folks currently shooting Trek with them.

Too bad you allowed NuTrek on this tribute - it's not like nutrek sh...tting on everything the TOS-crew worked to overcome.
Shame on you, Paramount. You should have HONORED Nichelle Nichols.
