Good Evening ! Maggie & THE knife. TAKE CARE..
F1 knife, Stanley cook pot, flint & steel kit, wool blanket, and only 25 feet of #36 bank line.
The reminder, the msr pot, heavy wool blanket, the jute or bank line 50 feet. Love the knife but the axe is a better one tool.
Having spent many years in full contact Martial Arts I have to agree with you. Hard times makes strong bonds. Personally I haven't had as much hard times in the way of challenges as you, but hard sparring tend to fuse people together as well.
Definitely. I don’t think it matters too much what you do. If it is really difficult and you have to push through the hurt with other people, it counts!
Maggie wants to go. "Will I fit dad "😂 Great video. Thank you 😊
So basically the 5 C's. Combustion, cutting, cordage , canteen, and cover.
MSR pot, The Reminder, Homemade Ferro Rod, Poncho, Wool Blanket.
New to your channel..just subscribed..your homemade Ferro rod, Stanley adventure cookset, tarred bankline, wool blanket and any of your fixed blades..the basic 5 pc's and you can't go wrong
Welcome! Thanks!
What a cool video, thanks for sharing
Thanks!
Hey silly tip, if you put a split key ring on the cups lid, you can spin it to lock it standing up... no more burnt finger tips!!✊️🔥✌️💚
Fantastic idea, the most helpful I've seen in a long time, thank you!
Thanks for the info!
@ONThree all good Jason just wanted to let you know you have a very positive energetic attitude and it's enjoyable to watch buddy don't become like these other sour puss peeps!!(=
Thanks Jason
You're welcome
I like to pair up my queen size, 100% virgin wool Pathfinder blanket (Faribault Woolen Mills) with a canvas Russian plash palatka.
As long as you're 6ft or under, you can fit under a plash palatka in a diamond/plough point configuration... or use as a simple bivvy.
Not the lightest setup, but its durable and bombproof. Keep the kit minimalist and its a pretty versatile setup and can get me down to the 20's without a fire and with a fire below that, of course.
You can wax the canvas but its not necessary and adds more weight if you do.
👍👍👍 .. nice.
I'm glad that you have called it a 'Survival Challenge' and not something done as a matter of course .. as you say, 'living off the land indefinitely, etc'.
History does not attest much, to those from from way back, who were forced to go out into the Wilderness with minimal gear and never made it back or were never seen again.
Times have changed but you are absolutely correct. The only way we grow is by pushing our limits .. be it tackling crossword puzzles, 'trying' to (the operative word being 'trying') understand complex science .. and in my case, perhaps not so complex 😏, walking / jogging, participating in sport (not just watching 😏), outdoor activities / challenges, etc, etc.
A good post .. something to mull over .. and 'mulling is good' (to quote from the Tom Selleck Jesse Stone TV Series 😊).
What items? Your selection looks good. Looking at Dave Canterbury's '5 C's' would also be a good starter.
Thanks for sharing .. take care ..
Thanks for watching!
Since the purpose was sentimental value:
Reminder, Stanley pot (I pried off the plastic tab on mine and replaced it with a key ring a decade ago), homemade ferro rod, wool blanket, roll of jute twine (doubles as tinder)
Another great chat Jason. Our girls have been exposed to the outdoors since they were 10yrs old and now (agreeing with what you've said) it's like a walk in the park for them. They're not harden but learned to work smart not hard. Our winter is rather mild compare to yours, with what you've got in the wool blanket will suffice over here. We would add a hot water bottle to that kit. It will keep you warm & boiled water for later usages. No knife.?? Now that's a challenge in itself. Hubby just said to carry a multitool, you don't have to use it but it's for "just in case" situation. We are sure that your subs appreciate what you're doing but at the end of the day matey, your well being comes first. And hubby is still eyeing that fatwood ferro rod you've made. We're know the girls will be watching your show from The Blue Mountains or they'll be rock climbing, abseiling or still asleep. Cheers mate from Australia.
Thanks! I love what you and your family are doing. Maybe one day I can visit you and the fam in Australia 😃. It’s on the bucket list. Bushcraft Kelso sells the fatwood Ferro rods. Cheers!
@@ONThree Hi Jason. This is the hubby, man of the house, king of the castle, the father of you groupie who can be a pain in the butt.!! We know we can acquire basically anything on line or from any outlets but the sentiment stays the same. Just like the knife you made with your grandfather. That fatwood ferror terror will have similar values. Imagine thirty years from now, having an item from the great Jason On3 Salyer.!! Look at it as a need for the needy.
Ignore him Jason, he's being rather silly but I do agree with his sentiment though I totally disagree with the first sentence. Sign: Queen of the House.
You & JJ are welcome on our piece of paradise.@@ONThree
Great video brother
Thanks!
5 survival items. Reckon the context must be we find ourselves stuck somewhere with only 5 items to get us home maybe? So this would not be an "optimal" collection of things you have on you? I default to what I have in my pockets right now (and I'm wearing the same pants I do BJJ and Krav in):
1. A large folder that can be used for self defense and processing materials -- the large Cold Steel XL Espada
2. a hank of cord (7ft) wrapped up and secured with 3 rubber bands (it's a single unit so I call it one item)
3. A 500 lumen small flashlight from Amazon with a diffuser to allow it to be used as a lantern
4. 2 spare AA batteries for the flashlight in their plastic carrier (Amazon again)
5. a combo waterproof arch-lighter (USB rechargeable) with a build in flashlight (yup, Amazon)
I can build a shelter, start a fire, cut what I need to (even baton a bit with the Espada) and have spare batteries and a backup flashlight to be used as needed
I can certainly see and understand the idea and point of these 5 items only scenarios, as long as they are done as a learning opportunity only for those who have never had this type of training or for those looking to learn extra skills. I think that Mors Kochanski said that the more knowledge you have the less gear ( kit ) you need.
I'd have a tarp, a knife, a canteen with nesting cup or without if that counts as 2, Ferro rod. I like light my fire because it comes with a built in magnesium and a dry wooden handle, 550 Paracord
Bring the msr pot, the smaller ferro rod/ fatwood, bear forest GT-3 that I have seen on your channel. Use a haversack to carry items. Take the wool blanket. Take cordage, what ever you prefer. Take a headlamp, or some kind of candeling device.
the one quart pot, ferro rod with the big chunk of fatwood, the Kaleb or Caleb knife, roll of jute, and the wool blanket with Maggie. that's my choice.
Can’t forget Maggie!
Naked and Afraid always seem to hand out the MSR pots on their shows! Must be ok! I have one, but haven’t used it much.😊
It is solid.
Cool story about your papaws..
Im Gonna challenge you on this one jason. Pick any five but use only the clothing your using in this video. Like you said it SHTF event has occurred these are the five items you had on you at that moment plus exact same clothing.(no rubber boots cause im sure your not wearing them right now) . Im gonna watch your video even if you dont do it lol.
Love this idea!! I already did the challenge and wore similar clothing. I definitely had the rubber boots though! You will see that video soon.
I really tried, but I could not limit things to five items. I am a super-senior lady and I absolutely would not survive on the road unless I was in my camper van. And in that case I would need strong protective gloves/hot pan holders, water filtration system, water, self defense items and food for same. So that's five items even though a couple of them are combo items. number six would be freeze dried food and food that does not have to be cooked or heated such as the Hormel Compleats. Seven would be fire-starting tools.
The Reminder is a good one [ Be Safe ] And the M. S. R. is good for a couple people at a time ; might as well go Fully Old School with Flint and Steel [ bird nest / tinder bundle skills ] ; if possible make the Oil Cloth Tarp [ it would be good content on your channel , as well as instructional ] ; the Jute Twine is a good Old School choice , but I wouldn't risk taking your Prized Heirloom Knife .
Just me- I want as much rope
and cordage as I can sensibly
carry within reason.
The usual factory package of
parachute shroud line is 100
feet, and it's definitely pocketable, so I don't understand the reluctance
to carry cordage. I'll have
30-50 feet of decent rope
to let myself down a steep
creek bank, and help me
get back up safely. ( not
rappelling down any mountains 😂)
USGI poncho and liner and
canteen, cup, and cover.
A decent knife ( doesn't need
to cost a week's pay) fire
starting kit with tinder ( if not
SHTF) energy bars, water
compass, 2 space blankets
1 or 2 P51
for a bare minimum
You do some of the best common sense vids.
Thanks!
Can u include the wife in the list of five? Despite her injured knee… still a valuable asset! Great video. What’s the best way to send u a piece of gear?? 👍👍😁🇺🇸

It’s called “Dog Gone”. I think it’s episode 4 or 5

Hot tent. Stove. Saw. Cook pot. Food. 😂😂😂

May I make a suggestion ? I would suggest you take BOTH the MSR pot and STANLEY pot.
Yes, you can. Thanks
so how long is the challenge?? if it is a 24 h.. or even a 48 in clear fair dry weather around minus 5 benchmark you need just a set of good warm clothing and no item at all...
Just go “Naked and Afraid”! Come on, Man!😅

@@ONThree 35 years of hardcore Civil War reenacting, PHD in 19th century material culture. There's a twist, I will email a video
Step on one end, twist it, and it self rolls, then lash it. Makes a loop to the body while supporting a pack.
I make knives, and at the 4:50 mark of this video, I have decided that I want to make you a knife. Free of charge and no obligations to put it in a video, I just want to make you a knife that you can bang with and use on a daily basis. If you do choose to do a review on it, that is all up to you. We have taken down our website, and I have gone back to work as a restaurant manager and am back to only making custom orders. If you are interested, please let me know, I would love to work with you after hearing about a 3 Gen project. Warms the heart.
That’s awesome. Email me and we can discuss from there jasonleesalyer@gmail.com
How can you say “20 years” when you only seem 19 or so!😂
Yeah he does look 19..!
Ha! Thanks!!
