I agree with you that a dedicated survival knife should be more robust, overbuilt even. And while I do have knives that would be good survival knives, I have to admit I don't carry them in the woods as much because they're heavier. So I would not have them in the most common survival knife situation I would be in. I'd have my "Bushcraft" knives.
Very good observation there. It’s very true that usually we carry bushcraft knives. Being careful and mindful not to get into a bad situation where our survival is at risk is key.
@@Woodswalker1965 Yep! Best survival plan is to prepare and plan ahead!
Someone smarter than me once said something along the following lines: A survival knife is the knife you have with you, but a sharpened crowbar works best. A bushcraft knife is best suited for woodcarving and making other tools. Think something along the lines of the Woodlore or Adventure Sworn classic or Mountaineer. A camp knife is the one you are actually find most useful camping, something like a Kepheart or Nessmuck style knife.

Great collection. Specially wood lores. After decades of collecting, it’s about 10 years I’m giving my less pleasant ones to friends and familiy specially youths. It’s treasure to them. So today I love all mines except my biggest purchase regret of my whole life, the Fallkniven A1 Pro. I use my beloved Moras the most. And keep my BRKT, Old Bucks, LT’s, WC Knives, Puukkos, and others in my safe.

I am curious about the WC Knives. What model do you have and what are your thoughts on it?
@@bobhabsolute4995 I have WC WBK with kydex sheath and heavy duty leather belt loop. You cannot find any better design and performance better than Mr. Williams handles. Rolls Royce of knives handles. Like many other US products it’s a tad bit overbuilt but believe me you can spend a life only with this one blade in wilderness. Mine is aeb-l steel and I used it in some camp and hunting occasions fully satisfied. You can trust his mindset since he has lived a long life in woods whittling and thinking to knife designs.
Hope I could pass my experience in these words honestly and truthfully.

Im a 1952 guy LoL...
I also like Swiss Army knives. For me I carry a Fieldmaster & offset it with a Walker or Ranger Grip 75... In years past I carried a Buck 110 & a pair of Klein Splicers Scissors. Currently I carry an Eldris in a leather neck sheath. My back up is a Carbon Garberg or an old Green River knife I got some years ago.
My Leathermans are a Wave + or a wingman because of the scissors.
As a project I purchased a broken Surge & I use one of the arms as a pocket knife with the blade, scissors, screwdriver & can opener. Fantastic for EDC.
On the collector side I have a Circa 1960s Randall model 23 & a Bark River Gunny.

Some people buy knives just to collect them and don’t actually use them. I love getting use out of my knives. it’s good to wear em a bit. Don’t put it in a glass box. Use it
My knives may look like they don’t get used but I take good care of them. There are a few that I don’t use though and probably never will, thanks for watching.🔪👍

Hello Wade. James here. I take it the “1965” is your birth year. I’m a Woodswalker myself, vintage 1964. Lol. Thank you for the knife collection video. I like your rule of one in one out. I have about 5 or 6 that need to go out….but part of me is lazy and the other part is holding on to some nostalgia for the knife. Last thing, I’ve re-kindled my love for the Buck 110 and little brother the 112. I’ll keep watching to see what you end up with. Take care my friend.

@@Woodswalker1965 Well, I gotta say I don’t particularly like to pocket carry either of them due to size, weight and thickness. Just like your Leatherman with the Kabar sheath, that’s how I prefer to carry either size.

I have quite a few that really should go as well, but I just can’t bring myself to get rid of them 🤷. I develop an attachment to my knives for some reason. Most other things I can get rid of no problem, but there is just something about knives that prevents me from letting go

Nice vid. A few comments: the case for the charge will also hold a small Ferro rod. The farmer can now be purchased with scissors. Not cheap. I have a couple of expensive lt wright knives. My favorite is the bushcrafter mark 2, no longer in production. Sabre grind. Very nice. Also have the old f1. My big comment on knives?
Don’t pretend your fixed blade knife is a hatchet. It’s not. Obviously you can do what you like in an emergency, but it’s not a true substitute for even a cheap hatchet.
I forgot my favorite folder: Spyderco Endura 4. Big knife, your choice of fancy or not very fancy steel. Mostly a slicer, but fairly sturdy for a folder.

@@Woodswalker1965 a mora companion and an estwing hatchet cover a lot of territory and, as you noted, if something happens to them it isn’t a big deal. I have one other suggestion. I read Mors’ book and watched his vids. Interesting guy. For most of us learning how to carve everyday items is pointless. Emphasize camping skills not bushcrafter stuff that most people will never do. For example, the super shelter is about camping not bushcraft. Just my idea.

In terms of multitools, I also have the Leatherman charge, I love it.
I started my bushcraft journey with the Tops BoB. Found it to be more of a survival knife.
I have since bought the Casstrom No10 SFK. Loved the knife so much that when they launched their limited edition version with the 5000 YO Bog Oak handle I jumped onto that - 200 made.
Haven’t ventured into the custom category as yet.

My best bushcraft knife is Custom Woodlore from Slovakia knifemaker Igor Hritz, hand made from Magna-Cut steel, elk antler handle, white liners. Then I love Busse Combat little edc knives from Infi steel, great toughnes and easy to sharp in the wilderness.

I collect old carbon homemade knives and love the one in one out. I get great pleasure giving them away. Only downside to great knives are the sheaths. I'm a 6th generation Master Saddler and I see what others don't and 99% of sheaths are garbage. IMHO

I have a GNS in 3V and love it but I do wish that it had thumb scallops and I'm not a fan of the sheath, but I really like the sheath you have for your GNS. 👍
Much like my tool, axe, and motorcycle collections my knife collection is out of control. I told myself that can only buy one knife and one axe/hatchet/tomahawk for myself per year now.
I did a video a few years ago for Really Big Monkey and the collection just dwarfs that now. I went on a machete, Roselli, and ESEE binge last year

The grail knives in my collection are the WSK/Saranac combo that I ordered from Dave Beck. I was one of the last (if not the last) people to get his custom ordered WSK. You are right that the custom knife experience is the next level up from a production knife. They craft the knife/tool to our purpose and physique.

Battle horse make great knives, I bought the Chris Caine Evolution, I don't think they make them any more but it's a great knife. I love my mora Garberg, I did wait many years for the price to drop but I have to say I love using this knife, with our persistent rain here in the North West of England I tend to use the stainless more than the carbon version. I love my cold steel Canadian belt knife for processing small game, it's really inexpensive to buy but really is superb for this task. I have just ordered a Manley patriot, I've heard that they are cracking little knives, especially for skinning and hold a good edge. I've loved my knives since a very young age, my Dad gave me a small pocket knife when I was about 4 years old, I've got quite a lot of knives, more than I need 😂 but then I do tend to get attached to them, like you I have given a lot away but then I end up re purchasing them. I agree on the difference between survival or bushcraft, a bushcraft knife for me is the one most designed for working wood a good scandi, a good definition of a survival knife is definitely the jaktkit knife, a great all rounder, it can skin game as good as it can fire prep, I love it's vercetilty, this to me is what makes it a survival knife.

Nice knives there mate! For me a knife that i want next is definetly a rob evans mk1. I have the mk 2 and it has grown to be my favorite knife-no matter what its with me in the woods, even if im reviewing something ill allways have my trusty mk2 on my neck ready for work. Nice video! Wade, thanks for sharing, I know a lot of us have been waiting for this video. You did a great job, however it brought back some bad memories (none of which are your fault). I had both of those Victorinox knives back in the day....until they both got confiscated by the TSA. I kept them in my travel kits and in the early days of no knives while traveling, I had them confiscated. Sucks that is the world we live in now. Anyhow, other than that, very informative, thanks.
Oh no that’s terrible! I have a very small Leatherman “Style” which is bladeless and I take on air travel. Did you ever replace the Vic’s?
@@Woodswalker1965 Yes, over the years I have bought more (not the exact same, not sure what models they are) but as we all know, nothing is cheap anymore, I've lost tools my father (who is now gone) gave me which was the worst confiscation. I put them in my CPAP bag over Christmas because I needed the extra room and forgot I had done that. Just some cool long handle bent nose pliers that I was really looking forward to using. Had to do with the length. Just over the minimum. TSA were (insert expletive)!!!! I even told them they were a present from my father who was dying of cancer, looking back, it was the last Christmas with him (during Covid). Crazy!!! Anyways, just keep moving forward, nothing I can do now. I always wonder were all that stuff ends up...some 2-bit government auction somewhere I'd imagine. I hope River is doing better...
I love your collection. I also have the same a small knife and watch collection that I'm trying to keep as small as possible which is tough 😂. Most of my knives are Fallkniven (F1 pro elmax, f1x with custom micarta handle and an S1 in vg10). They are phenomenal knives and user friendly. My only bushcraft knife is Rob Evan's bushtool and I love it and will never sell. My very recent acquisition is a Bark River 1.25 LT bravo in cpm 3v. I think this BR knife is superb in every aspect. I would highly recommend this if your looking for another knife 😅 I would love to have the original Skookum Bush tool hopefully one day.

Great video!!! Very nice collection - I especially like the BHK neck knife. I live about 30 minutes away from their store and I own 3 of their neck knives. I'm also blessed enough to live about 40 minutes from LT. I also have the GNS - My very first bushcraft knife. Excellent quality!!!

2 -these 2 knives are so good that I can't justify buying another one.... That's why I started making knives😁 for now it's a hobby but I made 4 very good knives from c100 steel

I have a SBK and I got it around the early 2000's and it took about a year + to get it. I am glad he is still making knives because his website looks "closed"....The site has not changed AT ALL for decades lol... The site looks frozen in time....

Hey Wade, I recently sharpened a Benchmade Osborne folding knife I bought years ago with a Cape Buffalo custom handle and a cool back ribbed design in the steel (not sure if there is an official name for that?). The blade is a combo serrated and I would say flat grind the front half of the blade. I hate sharpening the serrated portion, always awkward and I never feel like I do a good job. I don't know the name of it, as I have never been able to find another one online. Anyhow, I know most of your knives are mainly for bushcraft stuff and fixed blades. I scrolled through your videos, which I still have many to view, but I didn't see any of them on any foldable knives, whether regular blade, partially serrated or fully serrated. Not sure if you have any of those, but if you do, would love to see a series dedicated to those. Hope River is doing better.
Thanks for the question my friend. Yes serrated blades take a bit of practice and I admit to not doing it very well or that often. I have had some success with the Worksharp Field sharpener though. The small ceramic rod does a decent job on serrated pocket knife’s. Good idea for a future video, thank you!👍🔪
Great video Wade. Really enjoyed this. The setting was perfect. You out at the woodshed enjoying some coffee with a fire going. My favorite knife from your collection was the Adventure Sworn. Such an elegant beautiful handcrafted tool. First time I ever seen that knife was on a fellow Canadian’s video about 8 years ago by the name of Joe Robinet. Fell in love with it then as I just did again with yours.

@@Woodswalker1965 thanks Wade. I did forget to mention that on your SAK’s, that the corkscrew is not just for opening up a wine bottle, it’s also a great tool for undoing knots in your jogging pants and for shoelaces or wherever you have a knot. Just insert and start unwinding. Thanks again.

Nice collection. I've been eyeing the S1x, Barkriver Bravo (prob. 1.25) and/or Adventure Sworn Hunter for a long time, never pulled the trigger. Might have missed the boat on the Hunter, as I haven't seen it offered in a while...guess I'll stick with my Helle versions for now....I'm loving my Benchmade folder though...

You do get to the point where you just know what you prefer in a knife and use the same ones over and over. I've cut down a lot on new purchases and don't feel im particularly missing out. Did like the red scales on one of your Bushlore clones, im making the handle/scales for a Helle Viking blade blank and it's definitely going to have to go red now!!!!

Hey Wade, another well detailed video. You have a great collection and I like your philosophy of a knife in a knife out. It can get overwhelming with all the outdoor gear. With your collection though I would boost the budget knives. Spreading them around for backup is not a bad way to go. I like the Mora series too, especially the Mora Garberg.
The Garberg is a fine knife, I think I need another one since I gifted mine away. Good suggestion!👍🔪

great video! Got my Buck 110 but I keep it with no use, I old like to keep it like new… maybe a collectible item… Looking for a puuko style neck knife but not an expensive one. I wont give it much use. Got various Esee’s, the 3, PR 4, CR 2.5, Izula II, Darien… A Joker Erizo in olive handles, and a Cudeman Sanabria 2, waiting for the Joker Nomad 5”… I use the Izula II a lot! is a great knife… please recommend me a puuko style neck knife. Keep those videos coming… regards
You have lots of nice knives my friend!
Helle makes a lot of smaller pulp style blades suitable for neck carry. The Mora #1 is very light and a nice neck carry as well.

Love the Skookum! I have 5 different versions. Rod was a member of a forum I used to have and so those of us in the forum were able to buy skookums very early on before most people even knew about them. I asked Rod to make a smaller "carver" version similar to one of the smaller moras (the 510) and I ended up with 3 of those. Sorry for the long wait. I probably waited only a few months to get all my knives from Rod. Then Dan Schectman wrote the Tactical Knives article and the demand skyrocketed. Rod is a great guy and a super knifemaker!

I think any knife company that puts a razor sharp convex edge on a blade has to put a more expensive price tag on them, as the edge requires more skill by the manufacturer to do really well.
And as i mentioned they come really sharp 😊

I’d prefer a more substantial knife in a survival situation. Survival situations aren’t planned and I don’t always carry a heavy duty knife. I do however always carry a knife, most often a small fixed blade but not always. So in my opinion a survival knife is the knife that you have on your person at the moment.
Wry true when disaster strikes you use what you have and make the best out of it.👍🔪

If you get a survival / bushcraft knife and the spine won’t strike a ferro rod (looking at you, Mora Companion), do you sharpen it?
Yes I sharpen the spine of my Mora Companions. If I was truly in a survival situation I wouldn’t hesitate to use a lighter or matches if I had them though. Great question, thank you!
Crossing the border into Canada, I’m always told folders that can have the blade accessed with one hand are illegal. Especially suspicious would be that last one that you flicked open. Is there a nuance that I’m missing?
I believe you may be correct. I wouldn’t risk it personally, having said that I regularly take my Leatherman Charge back and forth over the border without issue. A flipper, maybe not. Thanks for the question, further research may be needed on my part.
Hi Wade. There’s a knife I dream of because of the handle, it’s the Jacklore Classic. I am wondering if you had the opportunity to handle one? If so, what are your thoughts on it? I have to say, the handle is very similar to the handle of your Adventure Sworn.
I love the JL Classic! I haven’t handled one but the handles look beautifully done. I can’t speak to thickness or comfort though. Let me know if you get a chance to get one!👌🔪

Great question. I prefer the MK1 for sure. I don’t use the Bushtool often because I use the MK1 so much. I highly recommend 👍
Sorry to poke my nose in here gentlemen, the new bushtool S that I make has a handle in-between the BT and MK1, just for future reference I personally prefer the MK1 and S handles unless you have very large hands.
That sounds like a better fit for me Robert. Nothing wrong with my Bushtool but I prefer the grip of my MK1.

@@JonathanRobinson11 order an original bushtool if you have very large hands, I can make that handle XL but I can't make it shorter due to the buttplate.
It would have been nice if you identified the steel on each knife, particularly the Falkniven blades. Bark River is noticeably absent here. The nice American knives you showcase use A1 or O1 tool steels . . . definitely not my blade choice . . . particularly in the environment you made this video in.
My apologies for not stating the knife steels. As you are aware 01 or A2 are common steels for American made knives. Since the Fallkniven X series is a readily available production knife anyone can find out they are Lam COS steel. I have owned BR in the past but they never stuck with me, so I felt no need to discuss them.
Although some of the knives shown in my collection are CPM-3v (my preference) most are 01, a steel I like and have zero issues with in my environment. If they get wet…dry them off. Thanks for stopping by and commenting.👍

@@Woodswalker1965 Sorry, but Woodlore clones are not Woodlores. I too have an Adventure Sworn and it’s Not a “Woodlore” just as a Rob Evans is not a “Skookum”.
I have 4 “Woodlores” and it really winds me up when people claim their Uncle Tom, Dick and Harry copies are “Woodlores” when they are nothing of the sort.
@@howardvarley8795 Thats a nice collection of Woodlores! I would only consider an original Alan Wood built knife to be a true Woodlore and all others to be a clone of the original. I have two Alan Wood Woodlores , a Julius Peterson numbered Woodlore,a numbered SWC Woodlore Pro, and a numbered Emberleaf Woodlore Pro and sorry they cost too much to sell.

@Woodswalker1965 I used to do concrete work, landscaping, carpentry, so on and made a couple of knives for a few Canadians over the years, alot of the old timers said that to me about my work so I'm glad to hear it was that good of a saying.
