    it’s a shame you didn’t finish the kelly link book, because the last story in it, “skinder’s veil,” is IMO one of her best. even if you didn’t love the other stories i would recommend reading that one for sure!

    Totally feel you on your DNFilosophy! Though I also don't tend to DNF super frequently, at least in part because I often juggle books and it can be really easy to confuse "I haven't picked this book up in a while" with "I'm actively putting this aside".
    My last two DNFs were both from me not realizing that I am currently in my Fiction Era -- _Theory of the Gimmick_ by Sianne Ngai is SO interesting, but was way more dense than I was expecting when I picked it up. And _Essential Essays, Vol. 1, Foundations of Cultural Studies_ by Stuart Hall was similarly just too heavy for my brain rn (it also falls into what I mentioned above -- it's sitting in my Active Reading pile but I don't think I've picked it up in... a month? two?). I do, however, 100% truly intend to get back to these books when my spirit decides that it's Theory Time again.

    I’ve read a lot of Ann Patchett’s work (Magician’s Assistant, State of Wonder, Commonwealth, Tom Lake) and Dutch House was the hardest to get through. I only finished by listening to Tom Hanks read the audiobook 😂 You should definitely try Commonwealth!

    Hey Mauve! Always love a book video, and this one in particular was encouraging as lately I've been DNFing more books than usual. Hearing about other people's experiences and reasons for DNFing takes away some of the pressure that is sometimes related to reading. 😊

    My recent DNFs are The Argonauts and Bliss Montage both in audiobook format.
    The Argonauts caught me off guard as I didn't realize is was kind of an autobiography and narrated by the author. The prose started out in such a jarring way I immediately couldn't follow along in audio. I'll pick it up in print.
    Bliss Montage.- I read the first two stories. I liked the premise behind Los Angeles that the ex gf is held forever responsible for the men she's dated, including the abusive ex. In audio format, the husband's 'voice'' was done so well: clanging ice cubes in a whiskey glass. The ending fell so flat, though. Oranges had an even more lackluster ending, but in a way, worked for , what I think the theme is, following your exes' lives after breakup Needing to know and tell others what you know, but those others wonder why you're involved anymore. I thought it a comment on social media. But again, the ending wad a nothing burger.

      @MauveASMR  Год назад

      Yes -- The Argonauts is super special! Definitely think it will be better for you in print. Also thanks for mentioning the husband's voice here. I never would have known that otherwise -- so interesting!!

    I’m not surprised you DNFed the Dutch house. I did finish it and I liked it but I had to push through. It wasn’t really about anything? More of a Bildungsroman, but great character development as you say

    Hey Mauve! I love your book recommendations. Have you ever read anything by Josephine Rowe? Her short stories are stunning (some of Tarcutta Wake is available on Google Books as a preview), and her novel A Loving, Faithful Animal is one of my faves. I think you might like her!

    What are the chances that the first book on your list was Bliss Montage - the last book i finished! I didnt enjoy it as much as Severance and know what you mean about the stories feeling incomplete. I've set myself an arbitrary goal of reading 100 books this year so where i might have otherwise given up on this one i soldiered through.
    Really enjoy cosy ASMR book content like this and hope to see more reviews and recommendations from you!
