What made the clip awesome wasn’t just Norm, and wasn’t just Conan, it was how well Courtney took it too. She could have been awkward and offended and made it weird, but she made it fun also.

I was a teen and I too caught it the original night it aired. I became a Norm fan from that point. I also became a huge Conan fan because Conan had more off the wall moments as opposed to a tight Leno show with no give
I think Conan reran this episode a few times, because I don't think I saw this in 1997, but I saw it maybe a year after that. It always stuck with me as the funniest and most spontaneous things I ever saw on TV. Then decades later we can watch it all over again thanks to the internet.
Norm's teasing ultimately came from a place of love. He knew that she knew (and that everyone knew) that the movie was crap, but hey whatever let's have fun. The man could locate and unite everyone's back-of-mind thoughts around laughter when those seemingly verboten truths would be otherwise left to die in shame. Even in his actual death, he continues to spread his love and laughter through this fucked up internet thing.
I think her reaction on the show and her interview here are really a testament to her personality. A lot of people must ask her about this because there's so many people that would take that whole situation personally and feel very self conscious about it. But she seems to be such a down to earth, positive, open person, that those kind of thoughts or emotions don't even cross her mind. She was able to just enjoy herself. Lots of lessons to be learned there. Much respect.
Courtney describing Chairman of the Board as "'9 1/2 Weeks' but with Carrot Top" in the original interview caught me off guard lol, that was a great line

idk about that but Conan wasn't afraid of just letting Norm go on one of his long winded jokes. he didn't try to steer the convo back to a point. He understood how Norm comedically operated and just wanted to go along for the ride.

It was totally hilarious and genius by Norm McDonald. But Courtney was such a good sport. She was like the “straight man” of a comedy routine. She came across like a trooper.
I came across the clip about a couple years ago. Was already laughing hard, but when Conan said, "Do something with that, you freak!", within about 1second you can see in Norm's eyes and face the lightbulb light up. I knew SOMETHING great was coming, but I wasn't prepared for: "I bet 'Board' is spelled B-O-R-E-D!!" I about fell out of my chair laughing, just like Conan almost did. And Courtney is so lovely, a good sport and a great sense of humor herself.

Even Carrot Top joked about this clip after Norm passed. Funny is funny, and no need to minimize the clever spontaneity of this moment.
Do you even know who the "interviewers" are that you try to claim they don't realize Norm was joking? they understand better than you, they both have more Norm and definitely Conan in-person time than most people, they haven't tried to portrait her as a victim, they've tried to see if Norm was making her uncomfortable like many people that saw that clip assumed she was, it was a good question and I'm glad they gave her the opportunity to clarify that, you are the one that doesn't realize how interviews work.
Courtney's a great sport about that incident. It had to be a pain trying to promote a movie and have that interrupted but Norm never came across as anything but good-natured with it. And it really was a hilarious segment.
She said she was actually glad Norm stepped in. She was pretty uncomfortable she had to promote it, and the movie itself wasn't anything she was particularly proud of.
I think that Norm actually sensed that Courtney wasn't too thrilled about trying to promote that movie, and his stepping in actually saved an interview that wasn't going very far. I do think Norm was very good at "reading" people, and he somehow knew Courtney would take it well.

She seems very smart and sweet.
She looks better 25 years later...crazy.
Her good attitude and sense of humour were fundamental in this clip becoming a classic. She's a classy woman.
It's on Lee Rd 142, I'm on Lee Rd 140. Same block still, just a weird shape. You need anything I got cha or go get it.
We never laughed as hard at anything as we did at this clip when we first saw it.
She’s still gorgeous
I am still madly in love with this beautiful woman. ❤
Norm loved Courtney. He wouldn't burn someone like that if he didn't care about her
Courtney was so classy and so funny and so beautiful during that clip.
She has wonderful humour. Great laugh and funny too. Of course absolutely gorgeous
Warms my heart she feels this way.
She's so sweet. There's a clip of him on Leno with Rickles.
One thing that goes underrated about the interview with Norm is Courtney's joke that her movie is like "9 1/2 weeks with Carrot Top" that set off the whole thing. That is a pretty solid joke and funny image...
how is it possible she is more youthful looking and beautiful than before?
Whoa she's aged like fine wine 🍷
