    Roger McGuinn:
“After Clarence White joined The Byrds, Hendrix came backstage at the Whiskey A Go Go, walked over to Clarence and told him how brilliant he was. He was a big admirer of Clarence’s guitar work, as we all were.”

I first heard this song in 1970. Loved it from Day one and still do.
The late Clarence White's guitar work and Roger McGuinn's singing and 12 string were epic and vastly underrated.
I don't really care for covers but Tom Petty/Mudcrutch does a fantastic version.
McGuinn's and Levy's lyrics are amazing.

This is one of the greatest live performances of all time. The whole band was fantastic, and Clarence White just burned on this. Take it from someone who was there: This is how great rock is played, children!

I saw them three times, twice with this lineup and they just killed it. The third time was the last time Clarence played with the Byrds. Battin and Parsons had left the band and they did the last concert with With White, Hillman, McGuinn and Clarke. I think they just filled in to fulfill contract agreements the Byrds had and it showed. That concert was not very good.

Not really a Byrds fan, except for this gris-gris bag of an album. It's got everything from country-rock with White's Tele in overdrive on LOTB to Chestnut Mare, my favorite ballad from Roger McGuinn and the guys. The picture of McGuinn sitting in front of an old-style Moog (including patch cords) inside the vinyl version is kinda cool, too.

Perhaps the most unheralded live album ever pressed that sounds like where you were sitting somewhere in the middle of the crowd just being mellow and groovin to the music. Blessed to have seen them in 1969 (my father took me!!!) and then McGuinn solo acoustic 2x in the 90s. Gifted, gifted performer.

Three chord song. One of my favorite songs of all time. I think I have played this song on guitar and in bands more than any other tune.
Catfish pie in a gris gris bag
I'm the lover of the bayou
Mark your doorstep with a half wet rag
I'm the lover of the bayou
Raised and swam with the crocodile
Snake eye taught me the mojo style
Sucked and weaned on chicken bile
I'm the lover of the bayou
I learned the key to the master lock
I learned to float in the water clock
Learned to capture the lightening shock
I'm the lover of the bayou
And I got cats and teeth and hair for sale
I'm the lover of the bayou
There are zombies are on your tail
I'm the lover of the bayou
I cooked the bat in the gumbo pan
Drank blood from a rusty can
Turned me into the Honga man
I'm the lover of the bayou

Maureen Devries - saw McGuinn, Clark, & Hillman in ‘78. Most excellent! Then saw McGuinn solo in ‘86. Met him backstage and gushed about he’d been my idol since ‘65 and how I’d just bought (for $600) a ‘67 Rickenbacker 360-12 like his first one! His cheerless reply? “Do you have something for me to sign?”

The song is attributed to Roger McGuinn and Jacques Levy. It was from a musical called Gene Tryp (anagram of Ibsen's Peer Gynt) which never got off the ground. Some of the later Byrds best songs came from this musical.
