I may be in the minority here, but I actually prefer seeing more of the "intimate" and "mundane" rather than socializing or activity based content. Your lives are unique and far from boring. So even if something seems normal or boring to you, it's interesting to us. Or, at least it is to me 🤷‍♀️

I agree, though I enjoy the other also, but I learn so much in these talks. How things work, etc. Things I do without thinking that are dependent on a grid and a social structure and power grid.

Happy New Year, guys. Been watching for years, love everything you guys do. When I was 13, my Grammy (affectionately known) as 85 was turning to 86 and my parents had dropped me off with her so they could go party down. That night she told me every new year eve, she would reflect on the year, think of an exemplary human with a selfless soul, and exclaim to yourself they are your human of the year, and to strive to be like them in the future. So this year, I am choosing your neighbor James. The guy is so cool, and simply a great human. If we all had a neighbor like him, the world would be a whole lot cooler. I hope you all have an awesome 2024! ❤

Your youtube videos are so much a documentary of your lives and, since you’re learning as you go, I’m also learning as you go. I love it! The idea of using an RV water pump from your cistern is actually pretty brilliant and so much less expensive. I’d want to see the outside water line under ground. Is there any way you could cover the line where it lies, instead of digging a trench (impossible due to solid rock) to bury it? Would that be too terribly damaging to ecosystem. Will you have a washer and dryer in your home? The washer could go through a lot of water. SUGGESTION: Consider the recycling of water pre-heating, so that that water that comes through the lines before the hot water flows can go back into your cistern. I have one on my small travel trailer and it really does save quite a bit of water.

Thanks so much for producing this great audiobook series. I’ve followed you two forever through all your Scamp adventures and “living small” in Colorado winters! I’m so happy to see you both kicking back and enjoying your accomplishments on your home building. We just moved cross country to relocate to western Nevada near Tahoe in the Sierra. We lived in a home we built(with a Mennonite contractor & his family of carpenters) for 30 years & were ready to downsize and live in an area we love because of great weather (300 + days of sunshine but still 4 seasons). When we worked full time, we dreamed of someday relocating to a new geographic location that would give us better quality of life with more sunny days to enjoy the outdoors. You both must be so happy to have more room to enjoy your surroundings in Colorado & cooking indoors! Happy New Year! Wishing you both good health & many happy years together!

My husband is constantly building and he has multiple projects lol I love it and I hate it tbh. I get some really awesome stuff he builds but he literally is working between his 9-5 and project from before sun up to past sun down every day and I rarely get time with him unless I try working with him which doesn't work because Idk what I'm doing and he gets irritated when I basically am just getting in the way. Reminds me of James.

I very much appreciate you sharing these 'visits' on youtube....as i haven't joined any of the other ways of online communication. There is So much negativity on some of them, I'd rather stay ignorant than read or hear it, which is not a good way to be either.

Currently listening to the 12/23 podcast while hooking up my water pump to fill jerry cans, using the instant water heater we have running off of solar in our camper trailer shower. That's our water set up (and has been for 2 years, highly recommend) while we finish building our off grid home in Cotopaxi, CO (started the build Aug of 23 and will have similar water setup).
Your debate of normal is so funny to be because all that you talk about is my normal day to day and it's so great to have it shared through your alls content. You help me to be able to express this way of life better as it's just so awesome and special to me that I'm frequently left in awe and without words. Thank you forever for all that you share and for being the wonderful souls that you are. Even though I don't know you all first hand (hope that changes someday), you're very special to me and help bring me even more joy while I do my property activities. Happy New Year!!! You guys are doing great.
Just wanted to add some advice about the book shelves above the kitchen. Grease. You will be surprised at the amount of “Cooking Grease” will gather above your stove and cooking area. I have 4 foot cabinets, on top I add decorative items and stuff. I have to take the stuff down once a year to give them a good cleaning. I am always shocked at the amount of grease and gunk that accumulates. I wanted to warn you about this unspoken fact. If you add books up there, your books will be ruined in a short period of time. Anyways…. I just was feeling guilty about not mentioning this to you. I love books too. I would be crushed if I ruined my books by placing them in an awful location. Please think about it or cover them up with a plastic sheet to prevent the damage of the cooking grease mixed with dust.
    Congratulations on your new home!!

Will definitely be tuning in to listen.

Oh…..go with a brown couch. Everything in your home is a warm tone. You will want to remain in that tone or things will start not looking quite right or you may try to “fix” the room but never quite making the room work but it’s because of the mixing of warm and cool tones. Pick a tone and choose your decor based upon that tone. A grey color is a cool tone. Brown is warm and will go with the lovely chairs. I have been there and did not learn about colors and tones until later. I would have saved myself lots of headaches had I had been taught about some basic principles of decoration and making the home feel like a space that greets you. You want the home to be where you retreat from the world and you find peace. Building the house yourself is a great way to make it feel cozy.

The tankless water heater is good choice for a place like yours. Normally its not recommended for bigger houses bc its limited on multiple outlets and people tend overwhelm the unit and then its not reaching to temp.

Excellent video. You two have sacrificed for a long time with this goal in mind. You absolutely win. Conservation of water is so important where we live. A blessing, not a given. So many take water for granted. You should be so proud of yourselves. Congrats on the book. Would like to get the digital copy. Will proceed with that.

Hello, I realize you do not ship your book outside the US and I was wondering if you could tell me where I could purchase a couple of copies. These are for Canadian Veterans who have an amazing relationship with the outdoors. This includes bear beware education, Veterans healing groups, veteran outdoor sports for support plus many more veins of comradery support. In a nutshell, when I travel down south, is there a place or location in Washington state that I would be able to purchase your books Barron? I will look at other options such as ship happens just over border. Thank you for your conversations, you remind me of our children both in their forties. Be well.✌️

Some people bake a cake with box mix other do so by scratch with lots of options. So nice that creative opportunities are out there for those who choose to make houses in a creative manner also with lots of choices and styles. As for codes and laws for building let us not forget that often those are put in place for the safety of people and those surrounding having learned from fires, floods, etc. Also in addition insurance companies need to know what it is they are insuring because with no codes/rules the exposure for RISK is higher. I too would like less "big brother" but in reality property values are maintained by having common rules/codes. When you guys get done with your building can you imagine a "single wide mobile" the next lot over from you or a blend of car salvage lot and dwelling? Obviously to maintain value in use and for resale rules maintain your investment. If next to you your view was blocked, which is amazing, by someone building something ugly or multiple stories preventing the view which you so enjoy? Again rules/codes and laws are put into place to not only insure safety but the enjoyment o four living experience.
Kudos to you both for being creative people I too like that flexibility of choice but guardrails of life help all of us.

We have exactly a single wide home in the lot next to us. Seems like people’s wellbeing and ability to thrive should supersede importance of property values. And if you want your house to be insured, sure the insurance company can vet it however they deem necessary. We shouldn’t be held to the same standard just to facilitate insurance companies. And my safety should be my responsibility. If I build something stupid and hurt myself, that’s on me.
Very much believe we can solve these problems without daddy governments legislation arbitrating our choices and limiting our ability.
