Testing the M1 MAX MacBook Pro SD Card Reader!

  • I ran a quick test to compare the internal SD Card Reader in the new 2021 14" MacBook Pro M1 Max to the dongle I was using before.
Thanks to some digging by my boy Liam we found out that the SD card slot built into the new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models supports UHS-II, which could theoretically allow for read and write speeds of up to 312MB/s with USH-II SD cards. It's been said that Apple has confirmed 250MB/s speeds and in this test I got 270MB/s.
For reference, there is now a higher speed available in UHS-iii, with read and write speeds up to 624 MB/s , but based on how expensive even this V90 card was that matches the UHS-ii speed I'm guessing there aren't currently many cards that could take advantage of that right now. However if you're gonna keep this computer for long enough, you may eventually end up with a card that's faster than the reader.

I'm dead at the Ovi clip hahaha. Dude, this is a crazy difference in performance and not something to downplay. 10x speed is gamechanging...

You got lucky man.. I have to same 16" Macbook M1 as you and my built in card reader wont even preview my 4k files on my Sandisk extreme pro cards let alone copy them over. Even worse Final cut pro wont even read the cards in import. Sending this Macbook back asap!!

Great video, but did you experienced any card reader issues with this new Macs? Mine MacBook Pro 16" 2021 barely read any of my two sd cards. 9 from 10 times gives me the "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer" message. The same cards works fine with USB-C adapter and external card reader. Thanks in advanced!

Yes, I have issues too. My M1 is not able to work well with any SD I tried so far. And reading posts from Reddit it's becoming a wide issue. Damn.

I’m having this issue as well with my mbp M1 Max 16. It won’t transfer large files. It gives me an error. I’m using my old 2014 mbp to download my data as I don’t own any reader. There’s no Apple Store where I live so it would be great if anyone can update if this issue is being solved by apple anytime soon. Cheers.

Hello. I cannot write to my lexar pro 150MB 1000x, 64 GB, SDXC from my Macbook M1 pro. This, however, can be done via an external card reader through the usb c port. I needed a driver copied to my Canon 5dsr camera to update its bios. Any idea what happens?

Lenovo in 2023 still has 37 MB/s card reader 😢 and it needs 230W 1 Kg power brick. 😊 My first computer had USB2 and 40GB mechanical harddrive (both ~40 MB/s). Lenovo has the 3600€ Yoga Pro 9i with UHS-I card reader. Go figure why is there manufacturing downturn in China.

would you say the storage can be extended using the SD connection? And maybe use if for Final Cut Pro projects because they take so much storage?
is it fast enough to have "SSD" feel to it? thanks!

Will a SDHC card work in the MBP 14? I tried it once but it didn't seem to fit and i didn't want to push it in to be on the safe side.
