- One of Avatar: The Last Airbender's most touching relationships is also surprisingly one of its shortest. The show’s first season sees Aang, Katara, and Sokka traveling north towards the home of the Northern Water Tribe, where they come to meet Princess Yue. The bond that forms between Sokka and Yue, and the relationship’s heartbreaking end, perfectly exemplifies the core tenets of the Water people and contains an important lesson for us all about dealing with the ebbs and flows of life. So let’s take a closer look at Sokka and Yue and why their relationship was so important to the story!

Yue is a criminally under appreciated character. There are people who chalk her up to not being able to fight makes her a weak character, when in reality they are forgetting that she is the epitome of how the Tribe's backwards rules against women are hurting them. And how going forward, this treatment of them would thankfully never be a problem again. Her and Sokka not being able to be together is wrong and unfair but that is the point.
Her bravery in the Siege of the North is almost unmatched by anyone else. She didn't even hesitate to protect everyone by sacrificing her own life to save the Moon Spirit. Not only did she save her people, she saved all of water bending as a whole.
It's a sacrifice that touched me as a child and now that I'm older, it touches me even more.
Through her sacrifice she saved the whole world. Without the moon the world would have been out of balance with devastating consequences for everyone!
I always think about how Sokka is technically the “Prince” of the Southern Water Tribe.
He probably could have challenged for Yue’s hand in marriage if he wanted. It would’ve been a great political move too.
Anyway this is my favorite romance in Avatar overall. There’s something so poetic, beautiful and sad about it. Also, since Yue is the daughter of the Northern Water Tribe chief, wouldn’t that also mean she’s related to Korra? Crazy.
Technically yes.
He was never a prince just because he's the oldest son of the chief of some village. That'd be like the son of the mayor of Timbuktu asking for the Princess of Japan's hand because he's technically a "prince" lol
@@billytessio6326I truly don’t think that’s remotely similar. The SWT is literally the “sister tribe” of the NWT, despite their estranged relationship.
An example more akin to what you’re describing would be Sokka trying date Earth King Kuei’s daughter.
Sokka and Yue are so compelling because it's a classic chivalric romance. Their love makes them better, but their love is a desire that could never be fulfilled. Yue is engaged to someone else, but her relationship with Sokka isn't seen as wrong.
It's also a love triangle we don't at first notice. Yue loves her people more than Sokka, and that love is what allows her to ascend to become what is basically a goddess, another aspect of the chivalric romance: love is a form of enlightenment.
Wow… you just hit all the beats mentioned in OSP’s video on King Arthur, which does a brief but thorough breakdown of the courtly love tradition. I never analyzed Sokka’s and Yue’s story in much depth, but put this way, it makes perfect sense!
Sokka and Yue had such great chemistry
Its called infidelity
0:34 That’s rough, buddy
Please make more Avatar: The Last Airbender character study videos like this one.
this is only their third Avatar video
Yeeees... Still hoping for videos about earth- and air- personalities... 😊
I loved the videos about water and fire, so I still hope, that they will continue the ATLA- videos someday with air and earth. 😊 And if they continue to analize the characters/their relationships, I would love that, too 😊
Glad we are getting an analysis on these two. Sokka'a always been my favorite character.
Yue: Farewell Sokka I’ve important moon duties to take care of. And yes I have pickled fish.
That scene slaps 😂😂😂
Ember Island Players was the best

Choose treachery it’s more fun. 👍😉☕️
My first girlfriend turned into the moon💔
That's rough buddy
She was engaged to be married and she never broke it off with Hahn so how was she his girlfriend ?
I got beaten to it
Ah, that old chestnut. Classic.
That’s rough buddy
4:19 I love the look on Yue's face here. Sokka's being a dork and she looks so happy to talk with him
My son is 5 and he says ‘Ang is my favourite character from Avatar. And Zuko - he’s amazing. I love his element and the scar. Thank you for doing this video. My mum loves Sokka and Yue.’
*_MORE OF AVATAR PLEASE_*
It was only two episodes, so it shouldn't have been THAT impactful. It also sheds light on how few episodes in book 1 actually take place in the Water Tribes. Feels like a waste.
I'm firmly of the opinion that Sokka didn't have children because he eventually found his way to the Spirit World and was reunited with Princess Yue.
They doing this because avatar is popular right now
I’m not complaining. People have been urging them to do more Avatar videos for ages, so maybe this will finally prompt them to finish the “bending” series and do even more.
Nah. Avatar has been popular for years even before the shitty live action show came out.
I would love to see your take on more Avatar stuff!
Not me still crying about this after all these years.
We didn't need a live action adaption
its a great adaption, yes ima OG FAN
Is it just me but when I hear the song Talking To The Moon by Bruno Mars I always think of this 😭
The Thumbnail:
Well that is not a good look for Sokka.
Yay avatar content! Please consider finishing the bending personality series!
*_wow screen prism / the take covering Avatar never thought i would see it ! I LOVE when worlds collide_*
I'm Team Suki all the way.
So excited to see this!
Oh come on, we all know that the most tragic romance jn this show was the Cabbage Merchant and his cabbages 🥬 😔😔
1:00 Not entirely true - in ‘Sokka’s Master’ he voices his feelings of weakness from not being able to bend any element 😔
Please more avatar
I remember as a kid I watched the Northern Water Tribe episodes a lot- so much so it wasnt until I was an adult rewatching that I remembered Suki at all. I was obsessed with Yue
Interesting when you consider their similarities to the Chinese story of Chang’e the moon goddess and Houyi the archer.
There are several versions across regions and eras and each discusses concepts of selflessness vs selfishness, brashness vs serenity etc
The main story is Houyi shoots down nine of the 10 suns when they all rise at once and scorch the earth but he and his wife Chang’e are banished to earth by the gods and later acquire pills of immortality and Chang’e takes them either selfishly or to selflessly keep a cruel, selfish apprentice of Houyi from taking them, or Houyi himself.
Becoming immortal but still banished from heaven she can only ascend as far as the moon thus becoming the moon goddess.
To this day Chinese and other Sino Asians celebrate the harvest moon and make moon cakes in honor of the legend.
In Vietnam we call them Hang Nga and Hau Nghe
They barely knew eachother lol
At least he’s happy with Suki. By the way, who is best girl for Sokka: Suki or Yue?
Suki. She beat the sexism out of him.
Suki was single Yue wasn't so you decide
Suki!
Suki!
Suki because she isn't afraid to challenge him. She has the warrior spirit and is a great leader like Sokka.
He was the one man in charged of his village
Can you make video's about earth and air bending.
To be honest I remember the play version of this character more then the actually character.
I remember everything around her, but as a character herself she wasn't that interesting in my opinion.
What's tragic is that amatonormative writing forced him to suffer over some frivolous romance-plot anyway.
I agree it wasn't exactly necessary for the plot but for his character it made complete sense. Sokka is a teenage boy who has shown to be attracted to women. He's also grown up surrounded by the same people he's known since childhood. Of course he'd be interested in the new extremely pretty princess from the other side of the world!
I always loved yue as a character and what happened to her was so sad but it was so bittersweet because she did what she had to protect.
Sakka had it hard to lose yue but he never forgot her and how he learned from why he acted this way in season 2.
Underrated couple but best through the story.
More atla vids pls!
When I think about it this ship is a little werid since Sokka already meant Suki and in arc he seems to just forget about her.
I understand he and Suki weren't together but in Sokka's mind when did he get over Yuki.
Add least with Katara and Jet the show has time to show there relationship changing to prove Katara is over him.
Where are the Personality based on the Elements? Please, finish that, Thanks!!!
also, what's the deal with all the terrible dads? in both shows all of them are horrible
FYI, "each other" can be used wherever "one another" is used. I guess it's the Spanish/Latin influence.
🌙
Y'all never finished the series about the different element personalities
Its interesting how after the show ended, Sokka never married or had any kids. I think this is because he never got over Yue's death. And even though he and Suki did end up becoming a couple. He was still thinking about Yue throughout their relationship. I think this shows that the love he had with Yue was so powerful, that he could not move on after she sacrificed herself. This proves that Yue was his one true love.
That's such a depressing interpretation! Poor Suki!
🌝
Unpopular opinion, but I prefer Sokka and Yue over Sokka and Suki.
Suki is one of my favorite side characters, but I think they rushed into her and Sokka being together.
Interestingly, they may have broken up or have a long distance relationship as Suki becomes Zuko's bodyguard, and Sokka mostly stays out of the Fire Nation. There's no indication that they even got married by Korra's time.

One thing I liked about about Netflix’s adaptation is that they made Hahn much less of a throwaway character. While making him more “sympathetic” might not have been strictly necessary, the fact that he was more than an obstacle/plot device was surprisingly refreshing. The fact that Netflix can make changes like that without compromising the overall integrity of the series is definitely a good sign for the future of the franchise.
Why the cheesy background song?
"That's rough buddy..."
Sokka & Yue should not be romanticized! Sokka was knowingly involved with a married woman. Yet through out the series he refers to her as his "first girlfriend". How can a woman to be engaged to another man be your girlfriend? In real life he would be considered delusional as he should.
She was engaged, not married.
@@NowRepeatAfterMe And that makes it better ?
Ohh, still sticking with "the water people" eh?
The thing I hate about this subplot is how it does the generic western (USA) clichie of being anti-arrange marriage.
As someone who is pro arrange marriage I get annoyed tha most arrange marriage from a story in the US is there bad by default and outdated.
Because it's extremely outdated
What's with the shitty tiktok background music?
This is not a kids show
