Seriously maybe being blind is hereditary cause Toby changed so much for the better and kate was all talk didnt lose the weight or anything and the reality is she is not going to be alive much longer unless she makes a drastic change
Yep, it’s also why in real life her character believability would never be able to loose the weight either. You have to be willing to make changes, sometimes hard ones for long periods of time. As someone who has also struggled with weight my whole life I would know. Toby doing what he needed to do to be successful in life is what I’ve done as well, and I’ve had to walk away from women I loved as well not because I didn’t love them, but they refused to grow with me. People deserve to be with someone who will and can meet them half way otherwise one person always stays the same and the other person bares the cost. 💲
The thing about KaToby is that it was right person at the right time. They needed to meet each other and be loved by each other. And they built something beautiful with it. And then life happened to them, around them or what have you. I think it's Toby that says the thing about when they met they were two people coping and that's what brought them together. I think that's very true. Where they were when they met they were exactly what the other needed to get through the years to come. The thing that bonded them was their weight loss journey. Toby accomplished it because he needed to be healthy for his kids. And for Kate being a mom and learning to navigate Jack's blindness, gave her something to focus on other than her body. This woman has not thought about anything but her body for basically 40 years and then she has Jack and finds that music school which leads her into a career in education. She finally has something other than being fat or being Kevin/Randall's sister. Being a mom gave her the permission to take up the space she felt she wasn't entitled to because of her bigger body. None of that would have been possible if she and Toby didn't meet and have this beautiful child together. I don't believe that they stopped loving each other, they just started loving each other in a different way. Jack becomes a musician and their daughter from the flash forwards seems to work at a museum. Those kids are the perfect reflection that KaToby works no matter what. They are all the best parts of Kate and Toby, whether Kate and Toby are endgame doesn't matter. They achieved so much more than they would've ever given themselves permission to hope for back in that first weight loss meeting. To think that their love story ends after 5 years is a disservice to them. All the good that they came from their union will pass on to their children, who will share it with theirs and so and so on. The love didn't end, it's just different but still as fierce and deep.
Kate and Toby breaking up was my biggest disappointment in This is Us. I've been re-watching the early seasons, and they had been through so much together. It's nice that they are able to remain friends, and they both find new loves, but I still wish they could have resolved their problems.
It seems to me that their problems ultimately stem from the fact that half of the people in the marraige are Kate. Granted, I wasn't a serious viewer (my wife was, I caught episodes intermittently) that she was a deeply dysfunctional person, and once Toby had helped her re construct her sense of self respect, she didn't need him anymore and tossed him aside. Coonsidering that Toby seems to end up with someone outgoing, confident and attractive who seems love his goody sense of humour, I think Toby was finally grateful it ended, otherwise he would have spent the rest of his life dutifully holding her up as she enacter her own Greek tragedy. Frankly I expect Toby and Philip probably becmae good friends offscreen bonding on how high maintenance Kate is.
Yes, that's how I felt the first time I saw the series. Veeeery disappointed. If Katoby can't make it, no one can 🙈🙈🙈 But now that I watched it for the 2nd time I thought their fighting was so horrible that I was glad when it ended and the dry humour of the British guy was actually refreshing 🤣🙈 but still weird, yes.
I’m so glad Toby got to be happy. He deserved it for putting up with the harassment and degradation he got in that marriage for all those years. Good for him.
So it's not just me? Because ym wife has been watching it, and I've seen a few episods per season, but what I had gleaned was that Kate was a neurotic and deeply difficult to live with, and that Tobey had supported her as she re constructed her sense of self identity after her abusive relationship, and then she ended it once she felt strong enough to be without him, even when he repeatadly showed a willingness to work on their relationship to stay together for the sake of the children. I really don't think Kate comes out of this looking sympathetic. Also, the pretty girl who jokes and flirts with him - is that meant to be the woman he's with in the flash forward? If so , how neurotic do you think Kate was the day he introduced them? "Kate, this is Laura, the woman who enjoys my sense of humour"\ "Laura, this is Kate, the woman who thought she could do better!"
