Kate assumed a lot about Philip and he shut her down immediately. Good for him.

She is self conscious....it's understandable but it worked out well
I actually LOVED Kate and Philip's story. It was mature, sobering, it was about two people growing, not wanting to make the same mistakes they made in the past. I found it so realistic
I love their story
Kate and Toby were both at fault. Taking a side just shows us how messed up we are. They were both unwilling to accept their own flaws, and try to fix them.
They weren’t at fault. Neither were.
They both tried.
So true, they were both blaming each other instead of looking at themselves
That’s why I feel that their divorce is so realistic. Most movies and shows paint one person to be the bad guy. Here nobody was the bad guy they were just extremely different. But personally if I had to side with somebody it would probably be Toby
She was the spouse that couldn’t be satiated and he was the husband who was absent minded. They were both at fault and didn’t realize it until it was too late.

This same actor also ended up with Alex from the series finale of Modern Family. Such an age difference lol
Watch "You're the Worst", the Phillip actor is the main character in there and he's incredible
That long pause before he tells her about his ex-wife's death...damn that lingered forever and really drove his story home.
Didn't like Philip at first, but now I simply ADORE him!! Didn't think that was possible
I love Toby but I think the reason why ultimately Kate and Philip work better is because he doesn’t put up with her bs and knows how to handle her complicated personality

She doesn't have a complicated personality. She is a spoiled brat who has been pitied and coddled her entire life by her father then her codependent, dysfunctional brother. She is awful to the nth degree!
I think it's because he works with her and had a blind wife. Kate has always been unsure about Toby's fathering skills (esp with Jack) and probably feels more secure with Philip in that regard.
Interesting take. I think Toby is jealous of "The Big Three." and knows he will never be the Father Jack Pearson was. Jack set a pretty high bar .
I think Kate is the more outspoken one in their relationship. (Phillip seems like a quieter man.) Kate and Toby were both outspoken.

I love This is us, but sometimes the writers go so overboard! Not being able to concive is tragic enough, you dont have to kill the wife to make it more dramatic. Also not every person has to have a super tragic backstory, how about just a sad one for a change? This gave me flashbacks to that god awful movie Life Itself 😩
Or the writers deliberately chose to have him experience the death of a close family member that he perceived as his fault so it would be something he and Kate have in common (she thought her father’s death was overtly her fault for years) and therefore bring them closer than her and Toby; it’s almost like there are specifically well thought out reasons Phillip is a better match for her??? 🤯

Because life is messy and complicated. Everyone has a backstory and not everyone lives a life untouched by loss. Tragic things happen in life but also beautiful things happen in life. Yeah it sometimes goes in directions we don’t want it to, but life doesn’t always go in directions we want it to either. Yeah sometimes it ends up perfectly, but also sometimes life ends up perfectly. In ways nobody could have written. This Is Us covers it all so well.
@@mariamshah338 Yeah, messy and complicated, but not super tragic, over-the-top and contrived as hell at every turn. Don’t get me wrong, I love This is us, been a fan from the beginning and I think most of it is really well done and very moving, but sometimes they just miss the point. Smaller storylines, smaller stakes can be as compelling (or even more, because they`re closer to reality).

I think Kate couldn't get over the "when i look at our sun, o see sadness" that Toby said. And also, he lied to her for months! He was working out alone (when was something that he said they would do together one day), making a lot of new friends just to run away from spending time with his son! I guess that's something you can't just forget, she lost trust in him.

Wow! I mean just... wow! I am already starting to like Philip. No offense to Toby because he is also a good man at heart but unfortunately he and Kate just did not make it in the end. Hopefully Kate and Philip will.

Toby cares enough to try. Kate doesn't. Plain and simple. Also, rushing the audience into liking an off-putting character by giving him a sad background doesn't work.

I loved Phillip so much more than Toby, and I didn't feel rushed at all. I loved seeing two people trying to be better versions of themselves as they opened a new chapter in their lives. And it's disingenuous to claim that Toby cared enough to try when he was actively lying to his wife's face about something that affected their entire family in a major way while also belittling her career.
This what such an over the top moment.

The vows are for better and for worse. Apparently it should be rewritten for better And for I don’t want my husband to feel accomplished and providing for his family so I’m gonna get a job without telling him so I can feel accomplished... 😑 please. Kate is jacked. There was a time Toby was supportive of her and she doesn’t reciprocate it to him. He is doing great loosing weight, making money and she beats him up for it. Ya Kate is in the right psssh. Kate is a self destructive person and plane and simple. The only reason Kate has her self worth is because Toby supported her there. Yes they make the divorce work but that’s because Toby is a good dude
It took 5 seasons to understand the couple Toby and Kate, life has always been and always will be made of ups and downs, but it's amazing how nowadays the most fashionable thing is the destruction of traditional family values, a couple lives together until die . In the past, when there were problems, they would try to fix and fix something that was broken. Today everything got easier, it's just the divorce and life goes on. Respect but I don't agree, I think the series destroyed the best couple in the series (after Jack and Rebecca), sometimes it's not necessary to kill the protagonist or destroy the family just to make more impact on viewers. It used to be hard for something bad to happen in movies or series, today I think it's rare to have the good old man living a simple life made of ups and downs but together forever.
I have never seen a guy try such as hard as Toby did, she did not deserve him at all, she is selfish af and made him lose his job and for the first time ever he was getting rid of his depression and starting to fell self worth. Also, he always did anything she ever wanted, he went miles to make her feel safe and loved and get over her insecurities and Kevin stepping in between them was totally disrespectful, she did not even tell her brothers to back off as this is a fight between her and her husband and at the very least gave him respect as a man, I am happy for Toby to get rid of this child that will never grow up, in fact he called her at the very end a kid and I know it was like a metaphor but I think he chose this word on purpose, he said I love you kid cause that is what she is , a kid. Total damage for the guy ,lost his job , his home and not seeing or being in his kids lives as much as he wanted and a complete stranger came in and took all of that and yet he was still nice and supportive to both of them. This was bad writing or just honestly showing us how horrible Kate is but it was finally revealed in the final season.
She loved him and always tried to keep the relationship together. But the thing is, she spent a lot of days alone taking care of the newborn bc he couldn't deal with the fact his son wasn't the way he wanted. She trusted him again just so he could lie to her for months and go out every single day to workout (when it was something he told her he wanted to do together one day), he made a lot of friends and all of that just so he could run away from spending time with his son. And then the whole "when I look at our son, I can only see sadness"- HOW ARE YOU GOING TO KEEP TRUSTING SOMEONE WHO SAYS THAT ABOUT YOUR BABY? She never planned to have a blind kid but when it happened, she took care of the child, he didn't and he lie a lot after as I said. His relationship with his sun got better but I think she just couldn't trust him anymore, she was obsessed with making sure the baby would be safe with him and who can blame her? He didn't even go on the weekend to learn about parenting a blind child. He isn't a bad person but he wasn't who she needed and she couldn't forgive that bc involved her baby. They are better of apart.

The way you put it also makes a lot of sense and I won't disagree, but if she said it to him the way you just explained to me now, he would have 100% saw his shortcomings but that's his way of sadness and how he deals with it,also he is depressed and tried to move on his own way, sometimes women need to know that certain things can be more painful to men than them especially when it comes to Thier son or daughter which are their only hope of becoming a better version of themselves and if u look at his backstory he had a lot of sadness too plus he did so much so much for Kate herself to help her, I think she should have fought for him. Also it was so disrespectful when Kevin interfered , they made him feel less of a man and she didn't even comment, if it was Beth or anyone else she would have said this is a conversation between me and my husband plz leave us alone, even when they were struggling financially , Kevin offered to help in a humiliating way, he could have taken him away and talked to him privately as a brother if they needed anything not making him feel useless Infront if everyone and his wife, which drove him hard to pursue a career and fight hard to support his family cause she is an amazing mother but almost broke. I get your view but I still will take his side
@Hallucinatingfreak yesss I agree that she didn't talk to him like she was supposed to. She wanted him to read her mind! I think both of them screw up :( like the therapist was SO BAD at her job omg. Anyway, I'm glad you can see my view and I'm glad I can see yours💖
"What are you doing?" He then just talks trash about his previous wife and then he gives a bland answer of "you make me happy" We are still left asking "What the hell are you doing"?
You’re not talking trash on someone when you speak truth. Phillip was speaking truth, Kate respected that, and they moved forward. There was nothing wrong with that conversation at all.

Yeah, that’s why he bared his soul and kissed her; he thinks she’s so annoying and toxic. It all makes sense! 🙄 Everybody makes assumptions about everyone they meet; conversations like this, where assumptions are explained and corrected, are where relationships form, hence why they freakin get married and stay together until Jack is grown!

I think that Kate is the better parent. I also believe Toby resents "The Big Three." Everyone is a product of their upbringing; Kate knows that it isn't fair to kids hearing fighting all the time.

It's KATE who is the selfish and the whiny and the nagging one. Toby did more than enough to fix their marriage while Kate still was finding faults with him and still unwilling to compromise. He quit his job, moved back home, and she didn't appreciate it, she only scolded him for everything he did right or wrong. So yeah. Kate is the selfish prat more than anyone else.
@@yevgeniyaleshchenko849 that is what I meant. Lol she is the one who suggests they go to couples counselling which costs a lot and she shows up late - Toby and fixing their marriage was never a priority where she thinks she is in her life.
