They Might Be Giants - Push Back the Hands (Official Video)

- you would give up your right arm to go back
to when you had a right arm
you’ll need some muscles to move it backward
push back the hands of time
broken glass is glittering like diamonds
can’t hear yourself thinking over the sirens
push back the hands of time
push back the hands of time
you want to sing to drown out the car horn
squeeze your eyes shut and scream like a newborn
like a newborn babe
dawn breaks like a fallen vase
push back the hands of time
unwelcome vision of rosy fingers
push back the hands of time
it wouldn’t help you if you’d had any sleep
it wouldn’t save you from the mission creep
push back the hands of time
push back the hands of time
screeching tires but never a collision
endless day without a sunset provision
endless day
push back the hands of time
push back the hands of time
you want to sing to drown out the car horn
squeeze your eyes shut and scream like a newborn
like a newborn babe
push back the hands of time
push back the hands of time

i love how flans still plays the guitar in that weird way he does
plus all the tmbg references
im super glad john is depicted holding his guitar straight up in the air like he does in real
And the keyboard for that matter!
I appreciate how quickly our hero realized the situation was fucked when he saw Titanic 1912.
Shoulda stayed in Don't Let's Start
TMBG references in a TMBG video? more likely than you’d think!
THIS IS THE BEST DIAL A SONG MUSIC VIDEO YET. DONT YOU DARE DISAGREE WITH ME. THIS WAS STELLAR. CINEMATIC MASTERPIECE
Incubus Bright Side was better
44th!
It has 44 likes! I think I'll ruin that.
Pixel Johns and Hammurabi: the crossover of the century
Aw, I wish we got the other three
@pyro gaming Sargon, Ashurbanipal, and Gilgamesh.
i mean, if i made a time machine, it would definitely have a screen exclusively displaying a low-definition video of john and john playing this song.
Lots of people would want to go see dinosaurs or take a gun to a Hitler rally, but I'd go to CBGB and sweat it out with the punkers for The Ramones, Blondie, Talking Heads and yes, even TMBG played there in the early/mid 80's.
@@sisyphuscranerigging7792 would you record it in low definition to display on your time machine?
Seriouse props to the animator for including all those old song refs.
You Know, I Genuinely Wouldn't Be Surprised If TMBG Made The Theme For An Italian Video Game About Time Travel.
Very good Don't Let's Start reference, that made me very happy
AHYYYY PIXEL JOHNS ARE BACK
"you would give up your right arm to go back to when you had a right arm" is a great quote. its like you like to take risks cuz its fun
⁰00
And I like fun
my #1 favorite song off I Like Fun!!
If I ever invent a time machine, I'm programming it to play this
The fact that Hamorabi makes an appearence in the video just makes it 10x better. Also that opening line is so perfect.
I totally agree
if you look closely, theres actually a couple of other characters, like im pretty sure the crash test dummy
ill have to give it another watch but Hammurabi isnt the only one
I believe it's Sargon.
Love the interpretation done by the animator! When I saw this pop up in my reccomended, I was going to think it would go for the whole "Car Crash" deal as alluded to in the lyrics.
Copy pasted from my other comment, I just wanna give my two cents
I always interpreted it metaphorically ("dawn breaks, like a fallen vase" and "endless day without a sunset vision, endless day-ay" hardly seem to have anything to do with a car wreck). It always seemed to be about someone who was perpetually behind on things and desperately trying to get their things done before it's too late ("screeching tires but never a collision indicating very near failure but somehow getting things done).
I just realized why the "Don't Let's Start" segment and the "Back to the Future" segment both count as "Livello 10": They both happened in almost the same year! "Don't Let's Start" was recorded in 1986, and the "Back to the Future" was released in 1985. Maybe that's close enough that the portable time machine doesn't count it. :p
Even my evil twin agrees this is the best music video in the history of music videos.
This is THE BEST dial-a-song video.
Sometimes I wonder if TMBG can even outdo themselves, with how amazing they are and all, and then they release songs like this and my question is cheerfully answered.
Linnell continues to write the most intelligent lyrics in music today - and it seems like he is becoming even more prolific. His ability to inhabit and voice the experience of people that he has never met is novelistic. It 's also wonderful that their songs confront the life issues that they are facing themselves as they age.
I like the references to previous TMBG music videos
2:35 is the set from the Don't Let's Start video!
In which a cyborg steals a time machine to escape his cyber-punk dystopian existence, only to find that he does not fit in any other time, and surrenders to the authorities.
😂
🤫🚫💰
Hate when that happens
i have a feeling this is what mtv would feel like if it was still only music videos and the prime way to get new music
Aw man, I just discovered TMBG tonight, now I've watched about a million music videos and I HAVE to draw that cyborg dude. I think this is the quickest I've ever fallen in love with a band.
Wow, I don't remember writing this comment. Never followed up on drawing the cyborg guy, but TMBG has definitely solidified its place as one of my all-time favorite bands :)
@@DeathOfDelta I feel you. I discovered TMBG at camp 30 years ago. My life would NEVER be the same.
For anyone wondering “Viaggio nel tempo” is Italian for “time travel” or more literally “voyage in time”
Voyage in time sounds objectively cooler
hearing this on the first day of the decade stirred some feelings in me
This aged well...
Oh god...
Lesson learned: Using time travel to run from the cops is a crapshoot
If he'd only twisted that dial one more time.
Ray Bradbury could have told you that. ;)
Ha! There was a "We're the Mesopatamians" moment! Song within a song! Sweetsville
2:39 Im pretty sure this is a Back To The Future reference, which is neat
Amazing video, im going to have to watch that several more times to get all the references. I saw Hammurabi and Back to the Future and Don't lets Start for sure. See you at the Regent in 9 days, so excited.
okay but the glitching guitar part was really cool
Check out the time machine getting increasingly broken in the top left corner
Amazing song, loved the "Back to the Future" reference.
it wouldn’t help you if you’d had any sleep
it wouldn’t save you from the mission creep
...
screeching tires but never a collision
endless day without a sunset provision

Golden verses!
Honestly, I wonder if it's about PTSD like someone who's a war veteran, maybe in some futuristic war etc. Only saying this because TMBG are Americans and well, we've got tons of war vets with PTSD and while we're not up to the level of hovercars or half-robot bodies, take it from me if we get those things our military will have them first.
@@alexcarter8807 "screeching tires but never a collision" sounds like PTSD for sure.
Someone was in a car accident, and when they hear the song on the radio during their accident, it always took them back to their collision.
@@erickay123 uhm, OK, I was once in a plane, that was going to crash ... Source: I'm here to type this. So, well, uhm, I was in the plane, OK, and it was going to crash, and my friend the pilot kind of panicked and zoned out or something. They say there are three possible reactions: Fight, flight, or freeze. He "chose" freeze. I "chose" Oh, I'd better do something. So I figured it out and I'm here. But, and this is the point of my whole ramble here, *flashbacks are real* I say this because I had a couple when I was back at my rented room later, it was wild. Full-on video and audio. No I was not a drinker or a drugger, I was a young college student who didn't even drink very much coffee. So when someone says they have or have had flashbacks, I believe 'em.
"Viaggio nel tempo" - - - > time travel
Thank you TMBG for using my language in your video! Such a nice surprise for us italian fans :)
I feel a deep melancholy from this song. But I believe the intent was to trick me into feeling this.
Isn't all media meant to trick you into feeling some kind of emotion?
Well the lyrics are about how nothing lasts forever and you can never go back, so pretty melancholy! But what I like about tmbg's sad songs is theyre usually optimistic and accepting of the tragic and unknowable parts of life.
@@musicjail i took the meaning more literally: it's about a car crash.
@@itsrick.hentaioninstagram7284 it can be about both! But i encourage you to look beyond the literal in their songs, they're amazing songwriters.
This is a really pleasant song to play on 1 am
Me rn
Love this! Cracked me up with subtle references. 👍😎
Loved the mesopotamian cameo!
2:35 Don't lets start!
I realized that at 2:35 that he is playing in the place where TMBG recorded Don't let Start
NYS Pavilion in Corona Park
15 minutes from my house!
And at 1:55 he runs into Hammurabi from The Mesopotamians
I would totally play this game.
I think about this video and song a lot. I Like Fun is such a special album to me and this was the first song on that album that I felt was truly speaking to me. When I first heard it it had already become an instant favorite. DAS 18 was one of the greatest experiences I have had. Being able to participate in hearing a new song each week was just incredible! Thank you Johns for this beautiful, fantastic song and album and for making such special and remarkable music.
Oh hey, Luke!
Is it just me, or is the future Italian?
Music theory nerd alert! What makes this song really unique and interesting is how they tonicize the V chords one after another so it makes the song sound like it’s moving through many keys in a short amount of time. Something that Beethoven did a lot of! Cool stuff ay! 😅
WOOO! You go music theory nerd!
English, please
@@001variation wibbly-wobbly musicy-wusicy stuff
I love the Mesopotamian cameo
That was awesomely amazing, and I'm loving ALLLLLL the callbacks! The retro scientists never get old. :D
The entry tune always gets me doing a little bop
The first two chords are the same as a Michael Jackson pop song I can't unhear it.
I love and deeply feel "dawn breaks like a broken vase". Also, very cool video. Loved the references to older TMBG stuff in it.
They used the pixel Johns for something other than a childrens album
Great video for a great song! Loved the shout-out to the “Don’t Let’s Start” video!

i can't handle how many references there are to other songs in this video. did anyone mention The Shadow Government environment near the end yet??
This is one of my favorites off the new album!
Holy shit! I LOVE this video! All those references!
really loved those self-references!
My favorite song on the album.
i haven't seen anyone else comment this, but at 2:00 pixel flans went from being a lefty to a righty?? i've been thinking it's because the time machine is breaking and distorting that reality as well
also i really like how at 2:17 at the same time "newborn" is sung, the cyborg is in the fetal position
What an excellent video for an excellent song! Love the animation, and the shout-outs to your other videos!
i only wonder, to when where you going, robot man?
I feel like it was no place or time in particular, but anywhere they could live in peace
to when he had a right arm
He wants to see the Mesopotamians play live
Somewhere, or somewhen, peaceful... Only to learn no such time exists
to 2082, of course!
This has got to be my favorite song from I Like Fun.
Thank you for making this fun and entertaining. Because if you were going to make the video a literal interpretation of the song (I'm screaming and in a lot of pain because I've just been in a horrible car accident that ripped my arm off and I wish I could go back to before it happened) it would be pretty damn depressing.
Loads of cool references!
Poor robot guy. He just wants to get away.
Pixel Johns return! Love the video and the song!
I'm astounded at how good this song and video are. It's not even part of a full album, it's part of Dial-a-Song; even still it goes hella hard. Absolutely love this.
It’s on I Like Fun
2:35 cyborg loves playing the guitar
Seeing the Don't Let's Start video makes me feel sad and nostalgic for my lost youth. I wish I could push back the hands of time...
Honestly a banger
This is one of the best TMBG albums I've heard. I'm catching up on various releases after The Else.
I loved this song on the new album, easily one of the best. And the video to accompany it is so cool and well made, I love the little references it includes like The Mesopotamians and another early music video (I want to say Don't Let's Start, but could be They'll Need A Crane now that I think about it). Excellent all around.
Favorite video this year so far.
This is perfect.
That Mesopotamians throwback
Amazing music video.
cant stop listening to this one
The style that they use pixels in reminds me of an old show that use to air on the old discovery Channel called The Secret Show

I'm not the only one who's here from that animatic!
now i gotta go see that animatic
that video is awesome
I facc-ing loved it... but now I'm sad
Glad I’m not the only person here that came from the animatic
In which the future is just like the past - 8 bit, with the constant threat of death.
2:34 TIME MACHINE REFERENCE?????
There are three different 8-bit music videos which all have the same Johns the three songs are thinking machine, put it to the test, and of course push back the hands. I have a theory. What if the johns made a video game called put it to the test and while they were coding making more questions in thinking machine John flans’s computer started corrupting and he got corrupted to. And when they got sucked into the computer they just decided to live in the computer. And then in push back the hands the corrupted computer got turned into a time machine that the guy tries to travel with but then the computer gets more and more corrupted. It just all adds up. It’s the exact same computer from thinking machine. I just think it’s a good theory
I like them..
I love this song! This is what I was greeted with today when I called Dial-A-Song! I'm going to start to make that a daily goal to see what other new songs I hear.
Same art style as "Put it to the test"
1:54
Also hey, it's Hammurabi!
Same style as "Thinking Machine" too.
Hammurabi? But I thought that he was dead - I thought he'd crashed his car?
@@SqueezeboxOfDelights time machine
@@SqueezeboxOfDelights Haven't you heard? He's playing bass guitar. I forget who for though...
Don’t Let’s Start Pushing Back The Hands of Time
I️ love this video
Is this arguably TMBG's best song to date? I think so!
MY DUDE, HAMMURABI!
2:35 Is that the set of the Don't let's start video? Big if true
Bartolomé Terrizzano oh my god it is
1964 World's Fair. - (MIB?)
Those are a movie scene montage.
It's right between The Time Machine and Back To the Future.
Morlocks and the Hill Valley Courthouse, Nice time travel references.
When you somehow get nostalgia from three years ago
Wonderfully awesome! Like most all of the D-A-S tracks, I falling deeper into it every time I listen. Thank God, Buddah, Spongebob and Cletus for these great songs!
Even tho TMBG has shown no real signs of slowing down and they're music is better than ever, something about the album I Like Fun feels like a goodbye
Meanwhile, they've released four albums since then! ;-)
I know exactly what you mean. It’s a very final sounding record, lots of themes of longing for the past and bleak death.
elijahlupe thank goodness this didn’t age well lol
Well I'm glad this didn't age well. Honestly I feel like the John's will be making music until their death and probably after.
the world needs more cyberpunk robots with undercuts
italian, seems legit.
When they did the first anniversary event for Adventure Quest Worlds, I do believe the Mesopotamia zone also lead directly to the future.
This song is oddly topical.
Many of the songs in the album are. Album is I like fun
unknown mack
It’s my favorite TMBG album. I should know.
I heard this song while I was cleaning my room (I normally turn on some TMBG) and I loved it. Amazing!
