Here: The "mechanical hands" in the chorus are a reference to the hands of a clock, thus the "Ruler of Everything" is Time. The "do you like how my face disintegrates into chalk" is referring to how you and everyone else will eventually decay into nothing. There, it makes sense now.

Just wanna say, at the end of the album this is on, there is a hidden reverse message that says "Wouldn't the world be better off if we took nonsense more seriously". Which I think really predicts the life of this song. We made a bunch of stupid overly absurd ironic memes, but eventually we took it seriously, and now we will ever be blessed by this wonderful song.
Well, that's kind of because it's their best bet to escape time. The music video resembles peoples attempts to escape time to have the "time" to do anything they want. The fact that time catches up to them shows that time is inescapable, no matter how hard you try, so just embrace it. Embracing time is really the way to "escape" it.
Okay The clay men are “human” and the little people are time and the big universe guy is the “mechanical hands” and the person singing heavily is also mechanical hands and he’s describing how time will be the start and death of everything. One of the earliest lyrics in the song are sang by humans “At the end of a time is another begun”. It explains why the tune of the music when the mv starts is the same as when it ends because it starts again. The rl scenes are really confusing but that is basically just “space” because the rooms are depicted as other “planets”. Time is inevitable and it’s fate will change all.
Good point but questioning memes is pointless a while ago there was a fatass bugs bunny as a meme and a weird depiction of knuckles from Sonic with a Ugandan accent

Surreal music isn't a recent invention lol, this song sounds like something you'd hear in the '70s. Not in a bad way, mind you, just that it's not particularly modern.
The people who would have been into Tally Hall had most likely heard of them back then. They did go on tour across the country for Good And Evil, so it's not like they were unheard of.
For anyone wondering. The song is about time and how the things we do only to boost our ego is a waste of that time. Time is the ruler of everything, We don't need to care avout how we talk, walk, dance, or what pants we have. In the end, we will all fall to times rule. So give it up and smile. Be happy being you.
I feel like existing and not existing at the same time when I listen to this. Gives me an existential crisis. This is what I feel like when I'm dreaming. This is what what I'm dreaming in the music video.
@@impulse1955 errr, while not technically the same kind of existential dread expressed in the above song, a similar sort of dread is showcased in I Earn My Life by Lemon Demon.

After hearing people in the comments talk about how the song is a conversation between time and humanity. I realized “detective undercover brotherhood, objective obscene.“ It’s basically just “no s**t Sherlock.“ which is said right after “I’ve been living a lie, a metamorphical sceme.“ or the human having a mental breakdown after realizing time is right.
@@GameyGaming Detective Undercover brotherhood = a detective with a low profile, with a strong bond with a friend, i.e. Sherlock Holmes Objective Obscene = an obscenity or swear word i.e. "no shit"
this song is about how when all of humanity falls, when the stars fizzle out, and when there is nothing else left in the universe, time is the only one that stands, and its foolish to think that you can outlast or stop time. so give up and just smile, stop worrying about the future when you could be enjoying the present.
Well I feel it's more complex than that. At the end of the video the 2 dimensional creatures begin to eat the world time lived in and transform it back in 2d. There has to be something there. It has to be reference to a sort of loop, as the lyrics also go over it.
I felt like it was more like, no matter how much power something has, there will always be something to one up it, and even if we manage to bend physics to our will, only a god or time will maintain power
My ears are blessed when he says "in the gallows or the ghetto, In the town or the meadow, in the billows even over the sun and every end of the time is another begun"
If you're here because of the recent memes, I want you to know a little about this band, Tally Hall. they're no longer together, the members are all doing their own thing now, but a reason the band fell apart is because nobody was interested in their stuff at the time. this was in the early 2000's. These guys stopped making music because seemingly nobody cared about their stuff. now, they've gained a cult following. now people are recognizing their songs, now people are coming to listen, now people are wanting more. I feel bad for them. I wish they'd come back.
I've heard a few Tally Hall songs before, and I'm going to be completely honest, I had no idea they made this Tally Hall is quickly becoming one of my favourite bands
God, how many great talents has that happened to? Even something like Among Us sat in extreme obscurity for 2 years before it completely blew up. It's crazy to imagine how much different the world would be if some things had gotten more popular at their time, or if something had never gotten its big break
Tally Hall's songs are hidden gems. Ruler of Everything became my favorite song, after randomly stumbling into it after watching the memes. If there was a time for Tally Hall to come back, it's now. I would love to see another song.
That's not true, there was no major falling out and the band members frequently collaborated on each other's solo adventures after the band officially went on hiatus. Three of them still co-manage the band's Twitter page.
yep, and they definitely fit together too, since not only does 13 transition really nicely into ruler of everything, it's also based off of the chime of a grandfather clock, which fits perfectly with the overarching theme of time
I love how they used the 3 major animation styles 2D animation Stop motion/Claymation and 3D animation they also used live action somewhat with the house.
Also the detective line Is basically just "accept it. I said what I said and I needed to say it bud" basically the detective part is searching the lies and obscene the trash he speaks of. So he cleanses it. That's why it also says his "only friends" when he shot the sun. He basically wanted to shoot his only true friend. Being time. Wanting to teach him l. But he been got had.
Ive listened to this a bunch and ive just realized a few things: -the song is about controlling time (mechanical hands are the ruler of everything) -using the power irresponsibly, and not understanding it -the song slows down, speeds up and even uses sounds that are sped up and slowed down to show the impact of time -in the video the little people get tired of being controlled and kill the ruler, returning everything back to normal and bringing the song back to the opening riff. Very cool stuff for a rather silly and wild sounding song.
i think that the parasites themselves represent time, the galaxy dude would probably represent people that are at the top of the world (billionaires, governments/leaders, etc), changing our perspectives how they want, when they want it. the fetus looking things are us/humans in general, which explains why everything fell to the parasites at that time.
That's not irony. That's not even a coincidence, it was deliberate Edit: sorry, was in a bad mood but yea they made the song like that intentionally :)
i think it's pretty cool how this whole song revolves around the concept of time itself, and how it loops almost perfectly resembling how time really doesn't end.
@Aiden Keith I know that’s the point of the song but fun fact time will end one day as without more than one thing there is no potion speed or time cause there’s nothing to compare against anything else
If you've never seen discussion of this song you may not realise that the high pitched voice is a person and the deep voice is time. This becomes particularly difficult in the line "Do you like how my face *disintegrates into chalk."* Time says the words in bold, interrupting the man to further point out his flaws before he's even able to make the statement. Conjecture: He seems to be trying to convince time that his actions aren't pointless, but consistently makes arguments that only prove time right - he is more interested in how he appears (do you like how I walk?) than how happy he or others are. Time interjects here, finishing the man's argument for him. The man says the same thing three times essentially - the way he talks, the way he walks, and the way his face looks are all appealing, but they're also fake ("Disintegrates into chalk"). The man points these out as if they're good things, but time finishes his statement for him and changes the words he was going to use just slightly to make how bad his attitude is clear. Yes, he appears nice from outside, but inside he has no positive features and he's prevented himself from being happy by forcing himself to act in specific ways.
This is a really cool interpretation. Also worth noting that Joe has also used a deeper pitched voice to represent a stronger being outside of this, in Spring and a Storm.
Ok actually this is the best interpretation I’ve seen. The whole rest of the song backs this up on how everything you do is meaningless when you look at time. It’s the ruler of you, you are forgotten with time. You might hate time, you might want to be immortal but in the end it’s impossible.
So you think time wants you ti be a pessimistic dude that hates everything, I’m starting to think maybe that’s why time gets killed in this video, it makes me think more that although time is mostly correct, time sees it as meaningless, but when your life is temporary, the only thing you can do is to craft meaning from nothingness. Like how we make fun of monkeys playing with rocks, when really they just want meaning as much as us.
You're close. It's about a person who sees TIME. He says "do you like how I dance I got zaconium pants" zaconium is fake diamonds, so he tries bragging about diamonds that aren't even real. You get the rest. You probably are wondering why is time arguing with him? Well at the start it says "Juno was mad he knew he'd been (had?) so he shot at the sun with a gun" it says his ONLY friend.
So, I'm pretty sure the song is about humanity's insignificance against Time. (The "mechanical hands" being the hands of a clock.) The high pitched voice is a self-important human being, and the deep voice is Time reminding the man how temporary and insignificant he really is. But, for the life of me, I haven't got a goddamn clue what this video is supposed to mean.
+Yzarro holy crap IT MAKES SENSE!! XD And what I think the video means? In the beginning, we are dumb and we don't know much, but we want to know more so we build a slight shot with very simple tools to take us to another realm of understanding (2d -> 3d?) And when the people arrived there, they had to use the new bodies (maybe they were lifeless before) to become aware. This is when the dude (time? Death, inevitable end?) comes in and we are aware of him. Then, they wanted to explore more, maybe find a way to stop time and be free of him? ... So they aspired to know more. They build a ship, multiple, with more advanced tools, and arrived at the present, the realm that the time dude lives in. (He lives in the human world? Maybe because we are at that stage where we are attempting to conquer the idea of time and manipulate it, but we can't) They developed civilization, were thriving in this (literally) alien world, and the ruler of time/ space (maybe 4d??? We cannot perceive 4D without math, so it makes sense that the little dudes cannot actually be free of him) comes in. The small dudes attempt to understand/conquer/be free of his reign of time that controls them and makes them die etc. but, after they go and overthrow time and space, they end up in the beginning. They were never able to defeat the thing that controls them- they are only men, human-beings. Thus, they only destroy their ability to perceive time, and end up 2d like they were, probably doomed to repeat the cycle. DANG ok that helped me understand the video XDD
I’m pretty sure the video is about how no matter how far humans go out into space and how far outside our own reality we reach, time still rules us all
Sounds to me like it talks about time being way more important than humans, and how in the end, once everyone's dead, the only thing left will be time. Yet we act so entitled.
It's about cycles, and in extension, nihilism; EG nothing matters in the end However, you could easily say that is not true, as you could say that by accomplishing anything in the span of all history is an achievement in of itself - what you have done will be remembered forever, while those who have not will not be remembered. Who knows. Maybe one day, we'll figure out how to make a wormhole and escape this reality, and into the multiverse- it's not impossible. The greatest thing about life is that it formed in a system that likely was never constructed with it's existence in mind (this could be up for debate if you believe in god or not, either way, it's irrelevant); and because of this, we as biological life forms will not ever stop until we find a conclusion in which we will survive. Nobody can say what the future will bring, and what technology will become available. Already, we have things that make old scifi shows look archaic in comparison - ion drives, laser beam weapons that can destroy planes and missiles almost casually, etc. Only issue is that we haven't figured out an FTL drive, and even then, we're still getting closer and closer to a conclusion. Never give up - never stop trying to make your place in the universe, as otherwise you'll just be overtaken by someone else who will... and just maybe, we can reach an end in which not even the death of the universe could stop us.
Y'know the first time I heard this song, I thought it was pretty much saying that time is sort of the monarch of everything. It's like a king or queen, it controls almost everything. Then I remembered how time works and the *other* definition of a ruler. This song is saying time measures everything. It took me 2 years to realise that time is literally the ruler of everything.
This Song is pretty catchy, I sure do hope this isn't a start of a period of time where ill be downright obsessed with finding out information on this band!
The song is a conversation between a human and the ruler of everything, the higher voice is the human, thorough the song we can see him asking things to the ruler of everything because he's insecure, seeking aproval from a superior life form "do you like how i walk?" And "if this mirror was clearer i'd be standing so tall" the latter representing a typical excuse, the deeper voice, in contrast, says much more complicated things like "consequential enough to sleep you into a trance" this what he thinks of himself, for instance, the ruler of everything laughs at him and mocks the human, "your facade is a a scam". The amoeba-like people are time itself, the fleshy people are humans and the cosmos guy is the ruler of everything, supposedly. This is why in the chorus the higher voice says to the cosmos guy "Do you understand mechancial hands are the ruler of everything?" Meaning that his title means nothing, and as much superior as he is, time will overcome everyone and everything, including the ruler of everything that controls the fleshy world, the fleshy people eventually fulfill their ambitions, they build ships and go into space, but the cosmos guy is not impressed and is rather unempatic, the biggest achievements of humans would probably be pathetic to other life forms in the universe, this is irrelevant, as we can see, in the end, time consumes the ruler of everything, and the whole universe, ressembled by the decay the objects in the bathroom suffer, no one can escape time, mechanical hands are the ruler of everything, eventually even the stars decay until the last scene, a black screen, there is nothing.
I agree! Also, you see how the “ruler of everything” isn’t even able to control time without the crank machine. The galaxy man isn’t even the ruler of everything, and time claimed him as well.

Ik is a joke but if u dont understand is like the micro humans parasited the clay humans to kill the ruler of everything cuz he was abusing them
Okay
The clay men are “human” and the little people are time and the big universe guy is the “mechanical hands” and the person singing heavily is also mechanical hands and he’s describing how time will be the start and death of everything.

So he shot at the sun with a gun
Shot at the sun with a gun

In the billows even over the sun

She criticizes me for being egocentric
You practice your mannerisms into the wall
If this mirror were clearer, I'd be standing so tall
I saw you slobber over clovers on the side of the hill
I was observing the birds (circle in for the kill)
I've been you, I know you, your facade is a scam
You know you're making me cry, this is the way that I am
I've been living a lie, a metamorphical scheme
Detective undercover, brotherhood, objective, obscene
Oh, no, no, oh yeah
Do you hear the flibbity jibbity jibber jabber
With an, "Oh my God, I've got to get out of here or I'll have another
Word to sell, another story to tell
Another time piece ringing the bell"
Do you hear the clock stop when you reach the end?
No, you know it must be never ending, comprehend if you can
But when you try to pretend to understand
You resemble a fool, although you're only a man
So give it up and smile
Do you hear the flibbity jibbity jibber jabber

Surreal music isn't a recent invention lol, this song sounds like something you'd hear in the '70s. Not in a bad way, mind you, just that it's not particularly modern.
The people who would have been into Tally Hall had most likely heard of them back then. They did go on tour across the country for Good And Evil, so it's not like they were unheard of.
For anyone wondering. The song is about time and how the things we do only to boost our ego is a waste of that time.

this song is about how when all of humanity falls, when the stars fizzle out, and when there is nothing else left in the universe, time is the only one that stands, and its foolish to think that you can outlast or stop time. so give up and just smile, stop worrying about the future when you could be enjoying the present.
this is exactly what I thought, the song essentially says that in the end time is the ruler of everything and will outlast us all.
Well I feel it's more complex than that. At the end of the video the 2 dimensional creatures begin to eat the world time lived in and transform it back in 2d. There has to be something there. It has to be reference to a sort of loop, as the lyrics also go over it.

Ive listened to this a bunch and ive just realized a few things:
-the song is about controlling time (mechanical hands are the ruler of everything)
-using the power irresponsibly, and not understanding it
-the song slows down, speeds up and even uses sounds that are sped up and slowed down to show the impact of time
-in the video the little people get tired of being controlled and kill the ruler, returning everything back to normal and bringing the song back to the opening riff.

Falling out of reality?
Existentialism?
If you've never seen discussion of this song you may not realise that the high pitched voice is a person and the deep voice is time.
This becomes particularly difficult in the line
"Do you like how my face *disintegrates into chalk."*
Time says the words in bold, interrupting the man to further point out his flaws before he's even able to make the statement.
Conjecture:
He seems to be trying to convince time that his actions aren't pointless, but consistently makes arguments that only prove time right - he is more interested in how he appears (do you like how I walk?) than how happy he or others are.
I wonder how you'd square damien race's what if I'm wrong, as a rebuttal
\Prevented himself from being happy\ This right HERE sir
So you think time wants you ti be a pessimistic dude that hates everything, I’m starting to think maybe that’s why time gets killed in this video, it makes me think more that although time is mostly correct, time sees it as meaningless, but when your life is temporary, the only thing you can do is to craft meaning from nothingness.
Like how we make fun of monkeys playing with rocks, when really they just want meaning as much as us.

The weirder thing is if you analyze the lyrics it all makes sense
Maybe because we are at that stage where we are attempting to conquer the idea of time and manipulate it, but we can't)
They developed civilization, were thriving in this (literally) alien world, and the ruler of time/ space (maybe 4d??? We cannot perceive 4D without math, so it makes sense that the little dudes cannot actually be free of him) comes in. The small dudes attempt to understand/conquer/be free of his reign of time that controls them and makes them die etc. but, after they go and overthrow time and space, they end up in the beginning. They were never able to defeat the thing that controls them- they are only men, human-beings. Thus, they only destroy their ability to perceive time, and end up 2d like they were, probably doomed to repeat the cycle.
DANG ok that helped me understand the video XDD
But that’s just a theory
A SONG THEORY
Nightmaregoldie aaaand CUT
I’m pretty sure the video is about how no matter how far humans go out into space and how far outside our own reality we reach, time still rules us all
The video is foetus society
Nice seeing this song blow up the past year or so i remember when it was around 450k views
Ignoring the video, the song has an existential feel to it... it's so creepy, yet mesmerizing.
Sounds to me like it talks about time being way more important than humans, and how in the end, once everyone's dead, the only thing left will be time. Yet we act so entitled.
It's about cycles, and in extension, nihilism; EG nothing matters in the end
However, you could easily say that is not true, as you could say that by accomplishing anything in the span of all history is an achievement in of itself - what you have done will be remembered forever, while those who have not will not be remembered.

RedMatter nothing matters. “Nothing” is a thing. It both means the positive and the latter
That’s so cool I don’t even know if it’s intentional
I think it could work both ways but ruler as in the supreme leader definitely seems more likely as the main meaning
Time is the judge and ruler of all things, since it both controls everything and also determines the significance of something.

This song isn’t actually about time as many people say. It is actually what is in the inner works of your brain while worrying about time. This song is actually very therapeutic. And it is comforting saying that time is a death, but it is also what moves you.
That's another way to put it, actually, but I feel it can be interpreted both ways.

It’s sad what happened to this band. It shouldn’t have taken so long for people to see the value in their songs, it shouldn’t have taken memes to make people care about it. They deserved better, and they still deserve better.
What happened?
@@leviticus5199 Basically, while they were active as a band, they saw little success and attention from the general public. They ultimately broke up and Rob Cantor, the vocalist and frontman, has become something of a celebrity on his own. I highly recommend his Shia Labeouf song.

They were literally ahead of their time
Honestly I'm not sad about it at all. What I mean is I'm glad they're getting on with their own lives after making good music. They're hopefully going to come back and pull from all of their new life experiences to be better than ever.

Something I love about Tally Hall is that for most of their songs, after you listen to it once you'll think it sounds nice and then move on, but once you start listening to it more or watch the music video, you'll realize how much meaning and depth there is in each song. Crazy theory:
Since the song is about time I think the “Flibbity jibbity jibby jabber” actually the sound of a clock ticking and the comprehending thing represents humans trying to understand time and how to overcome it but fail
Bonus theory:
The start and the end of the song have a zoom out on the world and the visuals show the creatures concurring land and colonising other worlds, making it an infinite loop
They move into a world, learn and move to other places, leaving a trail of destruction behind.
Sounds familiar, huh…
I also heard someone say that the section you"re reffering to id a metaphor for how short are lives are in the grand scheme of the universe. And the song speeding up represents that in said grand scheme, our lives look like quick, jumbled messes.
@@connormichael2005 That theory sounds really good! I didn’t know what to comment so I just commented a theory, kinda rushed tho.

The original quote came from Calvin Klein 😡
i've been listening to this song for several months straight, and every day I find something new. "mechanical hands" refer to the hands of a clock, implying time is the true all-powerful being. you can hear a clock ticking at 1:53 in beat of the drum.
Have you found anything else?
Wow, I was struggling with what that part means but I never got it. Thank you.
my favorite part in this song is "do you like how i dance? I've got zirconium pants. Nonsequential enough to send you into a trance." Where they nod to the absurdity of the first line yet state it had you thinking. Gets me everytime
