My brother died due to abuse and neglect from a facility for handicapped children and adults Feb 28, 1999 he was 28. He had the mentality of a 4 year old. He was non verbal. He had only been there 18 days when he died. He was there for respite care. He was coming home in 30 days. He would be 52 if he was alive today. I miss him more than anything in this world.

I watched this movie again for the first time in over 15 years. I went through something similar when I was nine years old and had to testify before a grand jury(horrific abuse by a relative )I wasn’t autistic, but I was delayed to where I wasn’t believed. It wasn’t until a doctor found out I was telling the truth getting a check up,and she reported it. I really felt for this child. It’s sad how these monsters take advantage of the child not being able to communicate. I had a very compassionate judge whom I spoke directly to, and I never forgot that! I’m in my 40s now. my heart goes out to all who has suffered through such ugly things!😢

I can really relate to you. I am not delayed but needed support with my learning. At school I was put in with the delayed because I was dyslexic. They didn't pick up on my autism and ADHD until I was an adult.
My mum living at home always made me feel delayed, yet at the same time did not support me and I was excluded from being treated equally among my siblings. It was a horrific nightmare living at home always being gaslit by a narcissistic parent in turn siblings also treated me that way. I tried to confide in my mum always getting given the cold shoulder. When I told her once I thought I may be autistic she said 'stop giving yourself things' 😢. And after seeing my psychiatrist who diagnosed me with ADHD she kept trying to normalise me by saying she thought the psychiatrist was wrong... 😢. Yet she abused what I was trying to confide in her with, with my ADHD and autism, telling her I struggle to find my words sometimes... And she did the unthinkable she committed a heinous crime against me 😢... So I relate to this story in so many sad ways. And this now man who plays an autistic boy is a truly gifted actor. ❤

its been proven many times through the years that FC is pseudo science, aka snake oil, it is never the client typing, its the facilitator, and yet people still promote it, there is even a movie on the netflix online called tell me you love me, or such with a similar case, that the teacher and updated testing, still proves that its the facilitator, of course the guy in the movie is manipulated by his mother as well, because she just projects whats he likes on to him and does not give him other choices, like in music and such, but, the main focus is the fact that he was not the one who was typing, it was the facilitator.

yet facilitated communication has zero evidence of being legit and has resulted in multiple false accusations. If a facilitator is in another room when questions are asked... and comes back. Not even the most simple question can be answered correctly. . . The average cost of training someone in facilitated communication is 30k usd per student. . . and the continued research into this pseudoscience is millions of dollars that could be better spent on evidence-based interventions that might actually improve independent communication skills

So how many years did that friggin creep get for hurting that boy??!!?!!!!!???
I was molested and raped from an infant still in diapers ( yes babies can remember, and I do in details, but will never speak them) until I was 12 years old. My grandma saved my life, she gave me love and support.. she is greatly missed.
I want justice for ALL CHILDREN!!!
It's not far that my abuser was my uncle from age 6-12 and he's still alive! And still walks free .!!!
I told my aunt about him when I was an adult ... She believed me.
I should have said something when I was a kid, but didn't think anyone would believe me. I'm not sure if my aunt told my grandma, I think that would have broken my grandma's heart. She trusted my aunt and uncle to take care of me Sunday - Friday afternoon, she worked and didn't want a stranger to babysit me.
    Family.... Right?😟😣
I'm now 60 years old and have been dealing with this all my life, I'm so proud if that boy"Michael" for having a voice and using it. He was a very BRAVE boy.

This is definitely a sad and good movie. I cried and it's sad that he couldn't talk but thanks to his teacher he was able to tell what happen to him and got justice. It's a shame how certain people try to knock the boy down and his teacher and Jeff lawyer even tried to manipulate the juries to thinking that the boy wasn't speaking for his self but the teacher talking for him but that wasn't the case they saw for themselves that he was able to speak for self and he's going to continue to get help so maybe one day he will able to speak who knows but it was a great movie and I wonder how he doing today. I was not sure if it happened. I am a Christian woman, raised by Christian parents. Beautifully done movie. I was molested by my brother at age ,9. I was molested by a female classmate; at a Girl Scout outing. Piano lessons. I was molested in our church basement by a brother and sister. Forgot their names. I never told anyone about it until I read the book " The Courage To Heal'. Also " Secret Survivors". I had no words to describe what happened to me in the 1960's. Very long story: my dad was diagnosed with PTSD and on meds. In my day, and being Black; were raised to keep certain subjects in the family. Especially mental illness. Sexual issues would bring shame to our family. Especially with my paternal grandfather, important minister in my mom's city. Raised in the south. Told go to the ministry for help. My dad went to a psychiatric clinic for his meds. Told never to tell outside the family. It took flashback to remember incest. Trusted no man really sexually. I wound up writing in a diary at 13. Any sexual situations I was in. Sex was always a shameful subject in our household. At 66 I look back glad I wrote to express myself since I was a child. It took writing, books. Seeking professional help after a breakdowns. I wasn't safe with my own brother. So it took faith in God to keep living without support for many years. God s Word and leaving sexual abuse can destroy the real image of God. I thank God for bring my Heavenly Father and Jesus as Lord and Savior. Thankful I met many women in church who won't discuss childhood sexual abuse in our church. We talked by phone. Not sure if they told our pastor. Sex is a subject matter that my church struggles to face. Only by faith do so learn trusting in the Lord is the best one to trust Must learn who to trust, teach children about sexual abuse early. Prevention is important. Leaving it can happen in any setting, trusting sick people. Those who take advantage of the vulnerable. God bless the good teachers and people in my life who have helped me heal for years. Still healing with Gods grace and mercy. 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾

As an Early Intervention Specialist working with the Special needs community here in Nigeria for 10 years now, this hits home...
I find the characters very relatable from the Parents individually, to the therapist and finally , to Michael.
Sadly, I've had a couple of parents plead that I live with their children while they relocate to other countries. Because they are 'unable to cope' with the children. Two of them where single moms and the kids involved were children on the spectrum.
I've found this work emotionally tasking, myself. Touched on so many topics, its just unbelievable! This film brings back stark memories of these past 10 years.

Then as the teacher who taught the child to remember words she spoke as a baby and gave her back her voice. The young child she taught was Melissa Gilbert. I love these two together and both movies are brilliant. I have them both on VCR tapes but all of our VCR machines went home with my special needs granddaughter who partly speaks and partly signs. And the boy who played Michael did a great job.

No no no! Never leave your children no matter how hard it may be. There is such a big reward within the struggles of taking care of your precious children.

In some cases as this movie it was for the child's best interest. Keeping our children sheltered isn't good they cannot grow that way.

    He gave me harmony!
When I was a little girl of age, something bad was done to me, that caused so much damage, as that little girl's heart broke into sadness, by some adult's madness!
The abuse gave me many years of agony, until I surrendered my life to the Lord, and found myself in harmony.
Finally I understood that He always had loved me, and He had felt the pain I felt ; that made my heart melt.
He helped me to forgive the abusers, as His love for me changed my heart for real, and He little by little the wounds would heal.
Today, my heart aches for those who have gone through the same, and thought it was some adult's game.
I pray for them with deep compassion and sorrow, as I hope for them a better tomorrow ; and that they will turn to the Lord with all their agony, as He is the only One who can give them harmony!

Despite the disclaimer at the ned... I know in my heart that so many kids who have Autism can be elevated to a place where they can communicate , Patty Duke made such good choices in the movies that she made as an adult. The Miracle Worker started her career but if you know the back story of her own childhood..... she had no control, choice or opinion in her childhood. This film makes it ever so clear that as she came to adulthood she exercised control of what project she undertook and that became the legacy she has left behind.
