Martinez Roger Duran beat Leonard in June of 1980 in a very close, split-decision. 5 months later, Duran fought him again and got thoroughly dominated by Leonard. They did fight a 3rd time, and Leonard won a unanimous decision. Roberto Duran was a great fighter, but he was not in the same class as Leonard. How did Duran do against Wilfred Belitez, Thomas Hearns and Marvin Hagler? He lost. Leonard beat all 3. Further evidence of their contrasting places in boxing history.
Constantino Milvio Close bout and Leonard fought well. What stands out in those Duran fights is that Ray never hurt Roberto in 35 rounds of boxing. Duran hurt Ray in the first bout, and that ultimately made the difference, but Leonard could never hurt Roberto even though he landed good shots.
Had Ray Leonard come along a dozen years later, he would have had about 12 or 15 bouts, then challenged first for the 140 lb title. Then moved up after a token defense or two.
@@boxout90 Gant was a local guy who had a good rep in Balt & DC. Ray being from Palmer Park made the fight more exciting. Gant did much better than anyone expected!
Gant fought to survive, not win. He just wasn't a strong, offensive- minded fighter who fought to his size. Leonard missed a lot of punches and probably was too anxious to knock out Gant , but it was a good learning experience for Ray. To become a complete fighter a boxer has to be able think his way thru an opponent who runs and does anything he can to last to the end. He has to learn not to waste punches or movement. Gant got hit by a punch that reached him even though he was moving backwards and hurt him badly. Leonard jumped on him immediately and refused to let him recover. Little things like that go a long way into shaping a fighter's career.
@mike gallimore I was speaking with someone on another page a while ago about the same thing. Benitez rematch, earlier Hearns rematch, Pryor and a few other big fights were missed because of the detached retina and maybe other reasons . Johnny Gant had a two and ahalf inch height advantage over Sugar Ray, but he would be knocked out in the bout. Gant fought Sugar Ray's brother Roger as a junior middleweight on March 31, 1980 at the Capital Centre (where Sugar Ray would defend his WBC world welterweight title against Davey Boy Green, whom he knocked out at 2:27 of the fourth round with a tremendous left hook)
Taylor had a tendency to lean forward , which exposed him to left hooks. He'd dip his head and stay too long and get hit. He never corrected the mistake and was probably the reason he had to retire when he did. His hand speed was astonishing and he moved quickly, but that one flaw he had really cost him.
tellthetruthg , Georgie Benton had the perfect game plan for Taylor to beat Chavez , it was to keep him turning . and Taylor was winning and would’ve WON , but it was LOU DUVA that screwed him up TWICE. !!! He overruled Benton’s plan to have Taylor to STAY AWAY the last round and pile up points with the jab . But LOU intervened and had Taylor fight and we see what happened. Also when Richard Steele asked Taylor was he okay HE WAS slightly nodding his head , but Taylor said in an interview in a boxing magazine, if you look at the replay LOU DUVA jumped IN the RING Shouting and screaming, and Taylor turned his head looking at LOU , when Steele keep asking was he okay, Steele never saw DUVA , It was DUVA’S FAULT !!!!
Interesting information, but are you saying that the way Taylor looked at the end of the fight was only a result of the two rounds he was given mixed instructions? Taylor was never the same after that fight, just brutally disfigured, even though he was only two seconds away from winning it , but chaves had a reputation for manhandling opponents, so something must have gone terribly wrong for him to have taken the kind of punishment he did for only two rounds! Later on, for the sake of comparison, Whitaker confused Chaves so badly -beat him!- and even though he (Chavas) KNEW he lost the fight, he DIDNT know how to explain it! Taylor had a promising career, but I just don't feel he would have lasted anyway. He fell a little short of being a great figher, exactly in the area that made Pernell great: defense! I'm going to look at that fight again, and even though your comment wasnt directed to me, it's still good to know, because I remember taylor vividly and know that his health has been bad for a while.
Leonard Charles , hello to you , thanks for a reply . I’m saying Lou Duva after the 11th round Overruled Benton’s game plan and had Meldrick FIGHT instead of STAY AWAY ( Meldrick says this ) and LOU JUMPS IN THE RING while STEELE is asking MELDRICK is he okay , watch the tape , MELDRICK IS NODDING his Head indicating he can continue ( I’m sure he may have been hurt some but he got up ) but he LOOKS at LOU Entering the RING HOLLERING at STEELE and it DISTRACTED MELDRICK as he was being Questioned by STEELE !!!
I get that part, and as I said earlier, he had the fight won, minus two seconds. I remember Duva too, a real fiery type who did a lot of screaming and hollering, which doesn't really help a fighter. Benton was really good , both as a fighter and a trainer. I am not disputing even one word you are saying; just that I don't think taylor would have gone a lot farther than he did, because he got hit too much, before and after the Chavez fight. It was his crowning fight and he deserved to have won, but I've seen Taylor get hit by so many left hooks that it's hard to imagine that Benton didnt see it and couldn't change it. Hed lean right into them. Just an awful, awful tendency!
